Passat Official: Passat R36

Thats not good news. I believe this car has some potential! VW sould have shoe-horned a 480hp W8 in this. It would have been more interesting.

Well, the previous generation Passat W8 was a big disappointment in sales so VW early on stated that there won't be a successor. Also the change to transverse mounted engine layout makes it very hard to drop a heavy W8 under the bonnet and then make the car balanced. So almost every possible fact supports VW's choice to use a powerful V6 instead of W8.

I just noticed, look at the lower part of the front, looks almost just like an R8!
Exactly my first thought. The front bumper does look a bit R8-ish, which is good for VW but not for Audi.

It would be interesting to see how many ppl would choose this over Volvos` S60.

I would. ;)

The interior aluminium pieces are real, and are the same as those you see in the R32 as well, except in larger amounts:

For some reason, I like the interior a lot. It has a very 'laid-back' feel that makes me feel totally at home with it. The instrument gauges also glow in white and blue like in the R32, a very nice touch.

The rims also look very subtle, not very glaring and fits the car perfectly. However, many may not know this but it looks staggeringly similar to the 'Omanyt' wheels on the Phaeton, which come as an Individual option:

It looks like some parts sharing on the part of VW, so they lose points on originality.

The engine is nothing special, I feel. It's only a measly 20hp more than the 3.6V6 Passat, I don't know if I'd pay the premium for the R pedigree. :t-hands: It comes with DSG though, I like.

The front grille of the R36 looks much better to me now, the twin pipes look great too. On the whole the car is one sweet package.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

I'm a little torn about the exterior... the front skirt looks a little too aggressive, while the rims look really tame!? Confusing to me!? :t-hands:

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

I like it and its fast enough.
Looks very fresh.
Looks 2 luxurious I think VW is having dificulty drawing the line between Audi and Vw products.
I whould take this over a Golf or Jetta.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

That sure is an ugly car.

And this is the engine the S3 should have!! :t-banghea

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

The looks I could live with, its the HP that gets me. There is no point of bringing this car to the U.S. where we have a 280hp version already. Another 20 hp ain't gonna do squat. This car should have been turbocharged with around 400hp to go with that DSG/AWD hardware.

The only good news is that this engine will likely show up on a R36 version of the next Golf/Rabbit and a R36 Jetta would be an awesome car right now, but everything I've read says this new V6 won't fit into the current Golf/Rabbit/Jetta/Eos platform? If that is true then VW made one of the dumbest moves they've made in a long time. Any one of those smaller cars would be transformed into a rocket with this V6.

Yes i heard that too. I also heard that it won't fit into the TT either on the other hand some people were saying that Gallardo's V10 wouldn't fit in the A6 but S6 proved them wrong.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

I like it! Looks very nice. Although i think it needs much nicer and bigger rims because these are horrible. And i have a feeling that the car sits a little bit high for R version...:t-hands:

In any case, :usa7uh:.

I think 350hp would be just nice, at 400hp it would be touching on the RS4's toes already. Not to mention it would be with DSG, a highly desired gearbox that's missing on the RS4.

Well 350hp would be nice too, but 300 ain't gonna cut it if they're going to bring this car to the U.S. The 280hp version is plenty fine as is, 20 extra "horsepowers" isn't going to be worth the extra $$$$.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

I can see this car competing with 335i performance wise?

That's true; forseeing the R36, they should have never made the 3.6 V6 Passat in the first place and stick with a common 3.2 V6 Passat first.

I'm unsure of how the Passat will stack up, it will be an interesting comparison indeed.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

Just got back from a working holiday, glad to see VW have been busy :)

I think the R36 press photos should have been released in Black, black .:R VW's rock :)

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

Looks great, probably drives nicely too.

One thing I don't get though is why VW doesn't offer a traditional manual transmission for this car?

DSG is great and has advantages for sporty driving, but there will always be people out there for whom there is no substitute for a manual transmission.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

I'm starting to like it, now that we see the R8 design in the lower valance of the front bumper.

Even in Europe the hp is going from 250 or so to 300 right? Still doesn't warrant the "R" badge IMO. This car should have had 350hp no matter how you slice it, IMO of course.

Now this engine in a Jetta/Eos/Golf/Rabbit...oh wee now we're talking a real "R" vehicle.

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

Just a quick note for those who dislike interior design :)

My bet is VW will option interior with Wood instead of Aluminum like they currently do with the R32 ;)

Re: Officiall: Passat R36

Hell no to wood! This is R car, leave the wood for ordinary Passats and Phaetons!
