^ Agreed. Those are powered by the M 279 Mike recently described thusly: :)

Mercedes-AMG 6.0L V12 biturbo engine with new technology. The Mercedes-AMG 6.0L V12 biturbo engine with the designation M279 is based on the M275 engine used previously and has been comprehensively revised. New exhaust gas turbochargers with an increased spiral cross-section, new manifolds and wastegate ducts with optimized flow characteristics increase the engine output by 18HP. The multi-spark ignition with twelve double ignition coils not only results in smoother running, but also enables even more effective combustion in combination with a new engine management system with higher performance and optimized cylinder heads. The resulting reduction in exhaust emissions is also due to a large extent to the optimized catalytic converter system. The newly developed Mercedes-AMG sports exhaust system, which has a pipe layout with enhanced flow characteristics, is 3.2 kilograms lighter as a result of a reduction in the wall thickness. But it is not just the inner qualities of the Mercedes-AMG 6.0L V12 biturbo engine that impress. The powerplant's looks are as inspiring as its performance: the high-quality carbon-fiber and aluminum engine cover reflects the exceptional character of the powerful V12 biturbo unit. Mercedes-AMG M279 V12 biturbo engine 6.0L 612-630HP and 1000Nm of Torque. Handcrafted by Michael Kübler @f1mike28 in Germany Affalterbach. Driving Performance is our Passion!

A few more details emerged. Both the Mercedes-Maybach S 500 and S 500 4Matic come with Airmatic, while the S 600 'Bach may offer MBC as option. The drag coefficients are said to be 0.27 for the S 500 and 0.28 for the S 600.

Some fascinating details like the use of unique door seals on the rear doors to make this the quietest car in the world....yet MBC is optional. Go figure.

^ MB probably used the new aeroacustic wind tunnel to make it to quiet. :)

Not so sure that MB Passion is correct about the optional S 600 MBC in Germany. In other markets like the USA MBC will probably be standard on the Maybach S 600. They may have meant to say, optional on the S 500, not available on the S 500 4MATIC and standard in the S 600. We'll see when the list of options and prices for Germany is released later this month.

You are right, in a market like India there are few legal limitation to fit MBC as the the frequency level of radar is coinciding with that of armed force. Hence any radar operated systems on the car like Distronic Plus, Automated Driving, MBC, etc is not available for S-Class

I would ask all the people who are so negative about this model being named Maybach: How does it in any way hurt either Mercedes or Maybach?

It hurts the Mercedes brand to unsuccessfully position themselves in the same league as Bentley and RR. The traditional approach to building cars for most brands is to design a sausage, scale it up in different sizes while adding more buttons to the interior cabin. Its an approach that works very well up to the S-Class level because customers of its segments rate utility and functionality high. For customers who can afford anything above an S-Class, functionality and utility is commodity. For them feeling good and emotionally rewarded is way more important, and that's what Bentley, Bugatti and RR are good at delivering.

Mercedes is stuck in the 90s luxury mentality during which the most luxurious PC was the one with most peripherals and the most prestigious phone was the one with a stylus, pull-out keyboard and any bells and whistles you cant think of and don't need.

Today some of the most celebrated luxury products are treasured because they are feast for the eyes, uncomplicated, timeless, offer an unparalleled sensory experience: All of which are qualities the Maybach brand has lacked in the past and even lacks today.

The S600 Maybach is the equivalent of a top spec massage chair on wheels. It's a good A to B car for traveling between the office and the Lufthansa 1st class lounge, but not for traveling from the Mandarin Oriental hotel to the Opera for Le Miserable.

Well Centurion, a very interesting post.

I agree with much of what you said. However, I'm still not convinced that the S600 Maybach is detrimental to the Mercedes brand because it is not being presented as a separate brand (like the previous Maybach) but rather as the most luxurious S class model.

I know that you have very sophisticated tastes Hassan ....but there are many people who are not as aesthetically perceptive as you are. There are a lot of people (including several on this forum) who are not particularly sensitive to the higher levels of refinement one finds in the Bentley Mulsanne (as pictured) ....for many, luxury is measured in terms of quantity rather than restraint; emphasis is placed on amenities rather than on sensory and emotional responses.

I fully understand your well made point.

I think the interior of the Mercedes would be far more successful if they adopted the "less is more" approach of Mercedes interiors of the past. The interiors have become a bit unrestful ....and even a little bit fussy (over-styled) in places.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
