The Phantom has unfortunately been bastardised by the aftermarket to provide Pullman like length. But seriously only the most Noveau-Riche asshole would do that to their Phantom as does taking the roof of the limousine to make it a full convertible.
The extra length is completely unnecessary as the Phantom Extended Wheelbase fulfils every requirement needed without resorting to extra doors and length.

Earlier tonight we were presented the first conceptual ideas for the RR SUV which I will talk about in that thread. But Maybach and Pullman was brought up in the discussion. A manager used the variation of Maybach and Pullman similar to the Lincoln Town Car and the Limousine.

"Nouveau riche assholes" lol, Most of the world's wealthy people are newly rich .....they are the biggest market for all the luxury vehicles. Being born wealthy isn't exactly an achievement .....I don't think we should use "nouveau riche" as a pejorative term .....as most self-made people have worked hard for their success -- just saying.

The EWB Phantom is very impressive looking ......I love its proportions.

In my view, the most impressive aspect of the new Pullman is the roof-line. Mercedes did not cut any corners and enginneered the extension with the proper curvature so the car does not look sagged in the middle like many LWB extensions. It's expensive but it's well worth it.

Yes, it was raised by 100 mm, compared to 60 mm in the predecessor. Let's compare.

So what about the 6 door, will there be one, because the spy photos certainly showed a 6 door. I prefer this if they knocked the frilly crap off, with standard bumpers, less flashy allows it would look better than the Pullman

S-Class Pullmans with six doors may also be available from coach builders, like ARES Atelier shown above or Carl Friederichs GmbH and Carat Duchatelet shown below. Also, Binz makes an E-Class based 6 door Pullman.

The Pullman interior is just outstanding! I personally think it looks better than the Rolls Royce Phantom extended.The design details are more coherent and elaborate. Rolls is definitely colder
with no fuss detailing.

You also have to remember the Phantom is a 12 year old car. Lets see how the Mercedes looks in 12 years.

Excellent point, which brings us full-circle and begs me to ask the question; what is the purpose of the Maybach models?

Well, I will attempt to answer my own question:

I think most of us can agree that it is difficult to come up with any practical reason for the existence of the Maybach S class models ......but this is primarily because we are looking directly at the product and not at the symbolism of it.

I doubt anybody will think the standard S600 is any less prestigious or desirable for the existence of the Maybach version. The S class Maybach will be bought mainly for what it says about its owner more than what it says about the standard Mercedes S class.

So the Maybach program is almost entirely reliant on perception and aspiration.

I can't imagine members of the famous Rothschild banking dynasty will care too much about buying a Mercedes Maybach ......people who are used to living at the highest level of culture won't be easily persuaded to pay so much more for the marketting hype attached to a Maybach nameplate.

Maybach is not a physical product ......its a marketting exercise.

I don't say this as criticism ......because it's largely the way the luxury industry works .....LVMH and Kering have made an art form of it.

Mercedes-Benz can look back on a long tradition of exclusive limousines bearing the name Pullman. In modern usage the term typically denotes a representational vehicle with highly luxurious equipment, extra-long wheelbase and two rows of seats in the rear – the individual seats are generally arranged as two pairs of “vis-à-vis” (facing) seats. The most recent example is the Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard (W 221 series), which will be delivered for the first time at the end of 2008.

Back in 1960, three 300s – the model known popularly as the “Adenauer-Mercedes” – were customised and built to Pullman specifications; Mercedes-Benz offered this body variant as a production model for the first time in the 600 model (W 100 series) in 1963. Over the next few years, Pullman versions of the S-Class 109 and 126 series (special production versions) followed, as well as the 140 and 220 series (both standard).

However, the history of the Pullman limousine body form in automotive engineering goes back much further, although the vehicles from the 1920s and 1930s did not always have a longer wheelbase than standard production models.
