SLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (C197 / R197) is a front mid-engine, 2-seater, limited production sports car developed by the Mercedes-AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, with the assistance of David Coulthard. The car is the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. SLS stands for "Super Leicht Sport" (Super Light Sport).
Edmunds - Inside Line Dyno-Tests the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

It was one of those days where you forget to think. We had just finished strapping the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG down to the dyno when we realized we didn't have our video equipment with us. Damn.

Although we didn't capture the glorious aural crescendo of the AMG's dry-sumped 6.2-liter DOHC V8 as it soared toward seven thousand revs, we got the dirty work done. The rollers of the Dynojet 248 chassis dyno would reveal the potency and character of this normally aspirated, 32-valve bent eight.

Hit the jump for the dyno chart and photos. Go ahead and make the guttural engine noises yourselves. Nobody's looking. Honest.

The SLS' power plant -- engine code M159 -- is a special one. Starting with the "base" 6.2-liter M156 V8 that's found in every AMG model with a "63" in its name, power-hungry German engineers then redesigned the intake tract, added more potent cams and installed freer-flowing exhaust manifolds. They then dry-sumped the thing, called it the M159 and stuffed it way, way aft of the gullwinged coupe's front wheels.

Oh, and in the process, they liberated some power. Mercedes-Benz rates the M159 V8 at 563 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm. That's what it makes at the crank, and it's some 40 hp stronger than the "lowly" M156.

At the wheels, here's what we measured (3% weather correction applied):

Yup, she's a stout one. Peak torque of 447 lb-ft was recorded at 4,900 rpm, and peak power of 527 horsepower was reached right at the 6,850-rpm fuel cut. When you factor in driveline loss, this bird is making at least what Benz claims, and likely more.

This is without question one of -- if not the -- most powerful normally-aspirated series-production V8s on the planet. If you're still in doubt, check out the quarter-mile performance of the SLS we tested.

Note that power is still on an upward tack even as it runs out of revs -- this indicates that the big mill's apparently got the lungs to support an even higher rev limit. Typically, production normally aspirated engines reach peak power and then check out entirely in the last few hundred revs.

This one's power output, however, is limited by the revs it can turn and not the airflow it can take in. For best results, shift it as close to the fuel cut as you dare. Pretty cool.

And the sound it makes? Yeah, pretty epic. Next time, we'll bring our video gear. We promise

Exciting tests coming

Looks like this week Auto Motor und Sport (out today) and May issue of Sport Auto are going to feature detailed tests (Supertest for Sport Auto) of the SLS - please give results to all the poor guys who live too far away from Germany to read those ! Really looking forward to finally see how that car is judged.

I hope AMS is available in my country today, so I will post the results later this day - and the scans tomorrow.
Sport Auto ... maybe next week. :usa7uh:

Went to see if my dealer had SLS but it was sold. He sold totally 2 cars so far but he told me there been almost 50 cars sold in Sweden. Thats impressive since it only live 9 million people in Sweden. So the demand seem to be good for the SLS.

^ Yes, but you have to consider that a base SLS costs about the same as a nicely specced E63 AMG.

Basicly, the SLS is hella cheap for a Mercedes supercar. A bargain for what you get. It's wonderful they aren't asking 100k more for the car, something they could have done without a problem :eusa_danc

In Russia, well equipped E63 costs half of the base SLS :t-banghea

Crazy pricing around the world. If the SLS costs as much as a loaded E63 here in the U.S. (about 100K) they wouldn't be able to meet the demand.

Is that's how the SLS is priced in NL? In Sweden, UK and most other places the car twice more than an E63.

Sales should be really good given that Mercedes already has a huge base of SL55 and SL65 owners who are used to forking over just under 200k for a two seater Benz. And given that the current SL is starting to show its age, a portion of the customers take this opportunity to buy the SLS. Sales will be even better when the convertible is out.

I really don´t believe US prices, you guys are incredibly lucky. The SLS here costs 200K €. The E63 is for 116K.

And the vast majority of people here earns between 2K and 3K € per month, so we will see very few SLS around here. I´ve been told salaries are far better in the USA than here in Spain, specially now, given our critical situation.

What´s the medium salarie for a USA worker?.

Average wage here is 700$, SLS costs 380.000$. :t-cheers: talk about lucky states :D

Wow man, I really didn´t know Russia was that bad economically. I know people who have gone to the States and live much better, they earn more money and they can do more thing with that money (not to mention they´ve found a nice girl who share their money with).

Funny you should ask, survey just came out. Average US salary is $43,460/year, which works out to $3,621/month. Take out an average 20 percent tax, it works out to under $2,900/month take home pay. As good as prices are of German cars over here, majority of people with common sense and regular obligations are far from being able to afford any of the 63 AMGs.

it's average over the country (which is pretty big :D)
as far as i know, in moscow it's more like 1500-2000$
