The C&D article was pretty wild on this. Essentially said that the S Class will go on through 2033. While the EQS will transition to a three-box styling and be sold still alongside the “normal” S Class for five years. This makes it a headscratcher to me… is the EQS no longer merging with the S? Are they to have a single successor in 2034? Is there even enough room in the top of the line for two separate vehicles that don’t have the current differences (one having style, the other not LOL)?

While it's sad there won't be a W224, It makes sense for the W223 to have an extended life cycle.

So it looks like we will get a second generation EQS in 2028, a heavily revised W223 in 2029 and then perhaps something all new in 2033.

MB pivoted quickly to EVs and 4 cylinder engines. Good to see that they are capable of the reverse.

If we're getting another EQS it needs to look like a proper Mercedes and the next S needs to look like an S. How do you do that without them looking alike? It's possible but it will take a really good design team and superior vision.

My sentiments as well. The powers-that-be at M-B headquarters really do appear to be more than a bit "lost". Certainly, market conditions have seldom been more difficult than is currently the case. And at least as far as German manufacturers are concerned, M-B is not alone. Volkswagen AG most certainly finds itself dealing with significant, similar issues. I suspect that even the haloed Porsche brand must be grappling with second thoughts regarding their "dedicated electric" strategy. The once widely ridiculed BMW strategy of "flexibility" may prove to have been the wisest after all, although I'm sure that BMW too may be losing some sleep regarding the upcoming dedicated NK electric architecture.

German manufacturers are concerned, M-B is not alone. Volkswagen AG most certainly finds itself dealing with significant, similar issues. Their biggest issue is the price/performance ratio of their EVs. Porsche realized that asking 140k for an EV it really has to be good so efficiency of Taycan facelift was greatly improved but interior quality is still low.

BMW developed a dedicated platform for iX and decided to make it look crazy, and like the EQS is not selling well.

MB is capable of making amazing cars so an electric S should be on dedicated platform beating Lucid stats.

That is true. I suspect that dedicated electric architectures continue to constitute the future of automobiles. However, the timeline of that future seems to have been moved significantly into a more distant future. The pace of transformation has evolved into something that can be more likened to a marathon rather than the sprint initially anticipated by many, myself included. As a decidedly design affine person, I am really hoping that AMG will follow through with their AMG.EA architecture. Even under the generous camouflage, the electric 4 door GT prototypes are looking absolutely magnificent.

I think they should be different for the reasons you just gave, the flexibility of the design team. Two stunning vehicles with different yet familiar, classic Mercedes looks. One more traditional than the other of course. The EQS should look more futuristic. All IMO.

Mercedes already drawn a very nice one but they were lazy to turn it into reality. Probably because it would make it their best design.

If they somehow managed to make that concept a 1:1 production car, I don't think anyone would have complained. But the end result is such a disappointment.

Though to be clear I think that concept would probably be completely impossible to mass produce at a reasonable cost

I’ve been asking that for years, never gotten a straight answer…you can’t even build a 2024 EQS sedan and May is about to end.
