I have a dealer who wants to sell me a 2010 Flying Spur at the same price point as my S550. Should I entertain this?
Last weeks Autobild contains some interesting comments on the Bentley (in a "test" with a RR Ghost). Perhaps is this some sort of help for your decision?

Hell no!
The continental family is ancient, so is bentley tech compared to the S class.
Actually everything compared to the S is ancient.
If he gave you a Mulsanne for the same money then we could talk, but not a FS..:D

Resale value on the conti range is catastrophic as well.

The only bentleys to own are the upper range, IE the Mulsanne and upcoming coupe and cabrios.

Rest is a joke.VW and Audis in drag.

Is more or less the same as Georg Kacher is writing in his article: Bentley FS is in fact rather non-modern on a old chassis, drive feels not so special and interior (compared to Ghost) not special, more Audi-sh.

Wow, kind of weird hearing the Mercedes is superior to a Bentley, even though it's the entry level Bentley. Lol

^ I was beaten in pointing out the Phaeton connection. FWD-based architecture; other than the trim bits and the engine (which is also Phaeton's but at least has turbos) the most you can hope is think of it as an Audi A8 (old) derivative. If you are shopping at this level, the S550 is a clear winner.

NO. That "Bentley" is nothing but an outdated VW underneath. Doesn't compare to the new S-Class.

I mentioned this earlier in this thread. I used to own a Flying Spur and currently am an owner of a RR Ghost. I've also driven the S550 demo at the dealer and have one on order.

We should leave the Ghost out of this for now because it's more expensive than both and suffers from even worse depreciation. Cliff notes from the below: Test drive the Bentley. Decide whether you want something exclusive and special or do you want the best sedan at that price point. I already have my special car, so the Benz was the clear winner for me.

A few of things to note:

1) The Flying Spur is sportier. It's got a lusty exhaust note and feels more connected to the road. However, it is AWD so in the end it will go into terminal understeer.

2) 2010 was before the Flying Spur got its first electronics update. The nav in the 2010 model is ARCHAIC. It's actually terrible. The whole multimedia system was outdated back in 2008, imo.

3) The Bentley feels more special...because it's a Bentley. It's more rare and prestigious. That's not up for debate.

4) The Benz is light years ahead in tech and creature comfort. Light years.

5) In good British tradition (...with German roots? :p) the Bentley feels more handmade. The amount of leather and different colors available brings home the bespoke feel. I loved my leather ceiling and the turned metal surfaces. It feels more special, not better, than the Mercedes.

Serpens......great post. Very informative. So it boils down to wanting the better ride or the better name...

I must admit, it enticed me because I'm from a small town and NOBODY here has or will own a Bent. But as soon as the 222 hits 3 years old, they'll be everywhere driven by people who make 50K a year. I guess apart of me wants to be exclusive.....superficial....I know.....but I'm back to my senses.....I'm staying with the S. (y)

Mercedes S-Class Shooting Brake gets rendered, should the company build it?

Would be one of the world's most luxurious wagons

Mercedes has fallen in love with shooting brakes, so Theophilus Chin has created a rendering of an S-Class Shooting Brake.
Envisioned as one of the world's most luxurious wagons, the model has a familiar design that borrows cues from the CLS Shooting Brake and the S-Class. As a result, it has a dynamic appearance which blends practicality with style.
While Mercedes has confirmed plans to produce six S-Class variants, a shooting brake isn't one of them. However, if the model were to reach production it would likely be offered with a variety of engines including:
  • A 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 258 HP (190 kW) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 4.7-liter V8 with 455 HP (335 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque
  • A twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with 585 HP (430 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque

Folks who want them usally go to custom coachbuilders. This is a 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL Estate (W116 S-Class) said to be one of 19 converted by Crayford. The last one is a diesel. All very unique. :)
