R-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz R-Class Facelift (W 251)

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class (W251) is a mid-size luxury MPV introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2005 for the 2006 model year. The R-Class shared its platform with the M-Class (W164) and GL-Class (X164) and was available in two wheelbase lengths: standard 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and long 3,215 mm (126.6 in).
OMG!!
The 350 CDI is beyond expectation. Is it single or twin turbo? What I don't understand is the gap between 300 and 350 CDI is huge. Why don't they update the 300 CDI too?

i think the problem with the r-class can be summed up in two points:

1. styling: it was styled too much like a minivan. i guess they wanted a design that wouldn't conflict with their other roomy vehicle: the gl-class. so they needed a vehicle that was roomy like an suv, but NOT an suv. and much like the bmw 5gt, the styling result was questionable to many people's eyes. though by changing the front, they fixed one of the most challenging design cues of the current model.

2. timing: this thing was introduced at a time when the deman (especially in north america) for large suv was still strong. when most people wanted room and had the money to burn, they went for the gl-class or escalade or the like. i think had the r-class been introduced now instead of 2005, then it may have faired better in its initial sales since most people now are getting tired of the super-large suvs.

that being said, personally, i like the interior design of the r especially now after the facelift. and the front change aligns it more with the rest of the mb line-up. but i still don't know if i'd buy one if i needed a roomy vehicle.

eMercedesBenz says it looks a little like the Q7?

When you look at the updated Mercedes R-Class, you’ll immediately notice one thing: this isn’t your ordinary mid-life revision. Mercedes knew the old R-Class design wasn’t working, so they altered it – significantly. The oval headlamps are gone; the grille that was proportioned way to small is gone; the severely sloping hood is gone. Replacing them, stretched headlamps that in no way reflect an oval shape; a substantially larger grille; and a heightened hood to match. If you kind of squint a little bit, the changes almost make the R-Class look a little like the Audi Q7. In the back, the changes are a little more subdued; however the taillights and bumper have both benefitted from a bit of tweaking.

Still the only choice for wealthy families for country trips.

Love the torque of the new 350 CDI,MB's specialty.

Well, this is way better than before, really. I quite like it now, as far as the exterior is concerned. Only the double fogs but oh well...:t-crazy2:

The interior is disappointing though. A set of chromed heater vents and new colors won't make it, if at least the plastics and build quality are not improved over the precedent version where it was rather poor...

Good to see a new V6 cdi, is it a new one or the same improved?

Yeah, the interior is starting to look dated with the old COMAND and all.

I doesn't really remind me of Q7, I'm not sure why eMercedesBenz says so. :t-hands: It looks much more like the ML/GL from the front at least.

I think eMercedesBenz takes someone who is blind...or that someone was drunk when he looked this photos :thumbdown

A very good facelift considering the model is pretty much dead in the market place. Mercedes didn't want to spend too much $$ on it. Any word on the new gasoline V6 on that German site? The front end is perfect, but the interior is kinda all over the place.

A real nice facelift, and the car looks good with the double fogs. However, I doubt sales will pick up.

No words about the new V6 petrol engine or that it comes with the new R-Class.

It looks like I'm in the minority, I actually liked the original front.
It was more distinctive, now it's homogenized, like a giant B-class.

The interior...

Yes, the color combo is nice and all, but this is something I'd expect in a C-class not a car that's $50-65K.

You know what they say about "first impressions last", right?

Why the hell does MB always do this? Whenever they release a new model they also throw in the pictures of the friggin base model. What a way to ruin the first impression. :t-banghea

Seriously. They should only show the top trim levels and print the base model photos on their website and brochures. :t-crazy2: :t-banghea

Well in their defense this was a "leak", not the pics they'd normally issue with the press release. Though this is probably a MB corporate sponsored "leak".

Looks much better than the predecessor. Great, good looking alternative for the van haters.

Meh...Leaks are usually orchestrated by the company anyways. Ha ha ha :D
