R-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz R-Class Facelift (W 251)

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class (W251) is a mid-size luxury MPV introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2005 for the 2006 model year. The R-Class shared its platform with the M-Class (W164) and GL-Class (X164) and was available in two wheelbase lengths: standard 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and long 3,215 mm (126.6 in).
It looks like I'm in the minority, I actually liked the original front.
It was more distinctive, now it's homogenized, like a giant B-class.

I definitely agree with you. I'd much prefer the pre-facelift if I were to buy an R. My first impression of this fl is that they made the car even uglier by making the already weak elements even weaker. The front looks like a giant nose-heavy boar:eusa_doh:... just my thoughts:D

I like it! :usa7uh: I have never disliked the R-class.....agreed the nose is a bit on the 'heavy' side.

Those double fogs is a no-no!:eusa_doh:

That looks much better! And, I'm very impressed by this new V6 in the 350 CDI. How much newer is it? Anyone in the know care to explain it please?

Looks like a part of the SUV family now. But it should have looked like this a long time ago... Oh well. Good job MB.

Looks good i really like the pic off the white one front view with the LED lights..

The interior is a problem though i guess they didnt want to spend money on this facelift..

I wonder if this will be the last R class..

Oh i almst forgot that new motor sounds a winner....

It's looking better and better. I've always been a 'fan' of this Van, and it really got better....

The more i see these pics the more i like it ....I would definately take this over a Q7.

Well I have to say, the LWD one looks really really good.

If only they had done anything to the interior, from the materials to the ridiculous 5th seat and the modularity, they'd have a winner.

This FL R-Class looks way better than the 5GT.
However the 5GT looks way better from the inside.:D

The hometown paper describes the update, also mentioning the R's popularity as chauffered limo in China.

Mercedes unveils updated R-Class

An updated version of the R-Class crossover, built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, makes its debut this week at the New York International Auto Show. Mercedes-Benz will take the wraps off a new version of its R-Class crossover this week at the New York International Auto Show, the latest attempt to spark a wider following for the Alabama-made vehicle.

The R-Class has been updated for the 2011 model year with a redesigned front end and an overall appearance that "conveys a new level of assertiveness," said Mercedes, which released photos of the new vehicle ahead of its global debut.

Built at the German automaker's Vance factory, the R-Class was launched in 2005 and is touted as a vehicle that features elements of an SUV, a sedan and a luxury wagon.

But it has been a perennial low seller in recent years, and there has even been speculation that Mercedes would discontinue the model. Last year, U.S. sales of the R-Class totaled 2,825, a 63.5 percent plunge from 2008.

Pricing for the 2010 R-Class starts at around $50,000.

"American consumers just aren't flocking to it in the way they flock to traditional SUVs," said Stephanie Brinley, an auto industry analyst for market researcher AutoPacific.

Part of the problem, she said, is that the long and sleek body of the R-Class looks too much like a station wagon, a style that Americans generally don't appreciate.

In other countries, however, the R-Class is in greater demand. For instance, China is the world's largest market for the vehicle, with sales that totaled 4,776 last year.

The country's wage growth means more people have drivers to take them around, and the R-Class is popular for its spacious and comfy backseat.

The R-Class' update for 2011 gives it a tougher Look up front, Brinley said, and Mercedes should be able to increase sales.

But she doubts that R-Class sales will rival those of the other two Mercedes models built in Vance: the M-Class SUV, which surpassed 25,000 in the U.S. last year, and the GL-Class full-sized SUV, which topped 15,000.

The R-Class was developed before the global auto market collapsed, back when expectations of annual U.S. industry sales soared toward 17 million.

"When you've got that kind of volume, you can afford to micro-niche much better," Brinley said.

But sales tumbled to 10.4 million last year. While the numbers are rising this year, they won't get close to the heyday of the mid-2000s anytime soon.

At the same time, the M-Class and the GL-Class are competition for the R-Class. They are all built on the same platform and offer similar features.

The R-Class "will see some regrowth and rebirth simply because buyers will come back to whatever our new normal is," Brinley said. "But it's likely to always be the straggler amongst those three vehicles."

Today at the 2010 New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz showed that it's still behind the all-but-forgotten "Sports Tourer" when it unveiled the heavily restyled 2011 R-Class. The minivan-that-isn't-a-minivan has had a rough life up to this point. It was never really marketed well by Mercedes, and the droopy snout never really helped. Like Jennifer Gray though, it's amazing what a new nose can do for you.

The 2011 model adopts the automaker's new corporate face with its larger three-pointed star resting inside that upright rectangular grille. It does just enough to butch it up and make the front end handsome. Although in profile, it does look a bit like an extended wheelbase Honda CRV with that sloping D-Pillar. Out back there's also a revised rear bumper with integrated reflectors, new lenses and a new black diffuser below the bumper.

Interior changes are small, and Mercedes only announced an R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R350 4MATIC model for the U.S. for 2011. The 3.0 liter BlueTEC V6 with 210 horsepower and 400 ft-lb of torque is capable of 18/24 miles per gallon, giving it a range of more than 500 miles or just about two tankfuls to Wally World. Pricing wasn't announced, but the new R-Class should be priced similar to the 2010 models, or $51,675 for the R320 BlueTEC and $50,175 for the R350 4MATIC.

It looks really good. I just wish they had done something with the upper dashboard, but I'm glad they did this much on a non-selling product. Time will tell if it was in vein.
