GLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLS (X167)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

Wow. That is a very dangerous situation for MB given the volumes if these vehicles.

I think MB will do 2 facelifts if they have faced delays due to changes in product planning.

Luckily the GLE and GLS are very good cars from the onset. I just wonder what sort of mechanical/engineering enhancements MB can deliver.
I would imagine they'd bring the crosslinked hydraulic suspension down from the G wage.
Even if they were to do a ground up new GLE/S, it's be MRA2 based anyway.

The facelift will do fine for now. But I think the plan was expedited MB.EA- L SUVs, but given their shift back towards ICE, they're probably gonna extend the life of the current iterations or make a much more substantial facelift a few years after the incoming facelift.

They don't need that G-wagen suspension, you can already get them with e-ABC in some trims.

Is it the same as e-ABC?

Either way, I'm sure there is still some room for improvement. They can't just keep everything the same.

No, the latest version of AMG Active Ride Control debuted on the SL and will stick to AMG only vehicles (it's only on the G63). The AMG variants of the GLE and GLS will almost certainly get it. Right now they still use the 48v system to resist roll but don't have the hydraulic system.

The mainstream vehicles are still going to be optionally served by e-ABC, which focuses on ride quality vs. elimination of roll. The take rate on this in the U.S. is ridiculously low. In reality the vast majority of vehicles will remain on the standard steel suspension or Airmatic.

My concerns are about freshness of design and tech mostly. The X5 and X7 redesigns are going to be dramatic.

Thank you. Very clear and informative.

I guess MB continues to develop e-ABC because of the Maybachs.

I agree about your comments regarding freshness of design. Will heavily revised MBs be able to compete sufficiently in the desirability stakes. As undesirable as I personally find the new X3, I suspect it's MPV interior feel etc. are going to appeal massively. It's such a far cry from the BMW I love, but it is undoubtedly a thoroughly thought out and developed product.

I wonder if MB will continue to develop safety, seeing it will be a generation older, what they will they do in terms of NVH refinements, luckily MBs are generally class leading at the moment, and what suspension improvements they make. The AMGs should also greatly benefit from Active Ride Control as the handling on the GT was unbelievable and the ride a far cry from the harsh AMGs of yore.

Should be interesting to see how this unfolds.

The X5 prototypes have been out running around for some time now.

Looks like a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I happened to come across a camouflage GLS & GLE last day from Dubai, as I was driving I couldn’t take any pics. However I saw double three point star LED DRL placed up & down like in this render and rear also had similar tail light treatment as in new E-class which I saw through rear view mirror. It was with Maybach grille but camouflaged. Same multi-spoke wheel as now.
