Based on the that review, it seems like nothing has changed between the two. They're very much the product of their respective brands.

Did he actually pick a winner or was it the usual for comfort get the GLE and for sportiness get the X5? Or a nod to the X5 for driving like a European car as opposed to the GLE which drives very American? Probably picking at straws here.

Looking forward to more comparison tests preferably with both cars with the same spec, adaptive suspension and M sport vs AMG line or equivalent.

The test cars weren't standard but the BMW had adaptive suspension while the Mercedes did not. Some interesting observations from this tester. He said the Mercedes is more comfort orientated and has soft wavy suspension that is not suitable for enthusiastic driving. This seemed to have a negative affect on the autonomous system when executing steering manouvers. He said its more spacious than the X5 and has a larger boot. Surprisingly he mentioned the build and materials used in the GLE were better than the X5. He said the BMW has a more natural seating position as the driver can sit lower while the Mercedes feels higher and more commanding almost like sitting in a truck. He praised both engines and gearboxes but said the X5 engine sounds better and its gear changes are fractionally quicker. He liked both interiors but he liked the GLE interior more. The X5 he said is more driver orientated and more dynamic than the Mercedes yet isn't uncomfortable to drive, the Mercedes he said is more suited to the American market with its soft ride and comfort while BMW is more suited for Europe.

Having driven the new GLE350 it is much better than the previous generation, but no, it does not feel like an X5. So, it's going to depend on what you like. The standard electro mechanical steering does give the sensation of being lighter and looser, even though that has more to do with the resistance you feel when steering than whether it actually is. While the new one is larger it is more athletic and has less body lean and a more stable feel.
i would say the suspension and sport package will change this and will report back once we've had one in to drive.
The GLE does a really, really good job of being a better GLE and I don't see any purpose in trying to be an X5 and am glad they didn't. Orders are pouring in for the GLE.

Yeah orders are pouring in, but the factory is have a lot of issues getting them built.

Not a bad review surprised he didn’t place it higher than the X5 I always thought he preferred MBs. I don’t think he particularly likes the looks of the GLE.

Surprisingly good review, he didnt really have anything negative to say about the GLE except maybe he wasnt too bowled over by the looks

The GLE 580 becomes official:

Mercedes-Benz has found another home for its new electrically boosted V-8: the GLE-class. That's no surprise, as the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 with the 48-volt motor-generator, first seen in the 2020 GLS580, is a powerful and clean-burning engine with a future. This complex powertrain is slated to replace the standard V-8 engines in all of the automaker's current 550- and 560-series cars.

In this new GLE580, the setup produces the same 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque as in the GLS, with an extra 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft summoned by what Mercedes calls the integrated starter generator. That makes it more powerful than the base version of the AMG GT, which has 469 horsepower. Mounted between the nine-speed automatic transmission and the engine output shaft, this motor-generator replaces the alternator and traditional starter motor. It runs everything else a GLE owner would want, such as air conditioning and the water pump, without an accessory drive belt on the engine. Driven gingerly, the system can shut off the V-8 at high speeds while coasting or braking to a stop at lower speeds, allowing the 0.9-kWh battery to temporarily run the GLE580 like an EV. It's identical in operation to the six-cylinder GLE450 we've tested, only with considerably more thrust and less fuel economy. Those estimates aren't available, but the last time Mercedes stuffed a twin-turbo V-8 into a non-AMG version of the GLE, it was called the ML550, and in 2012 we could only achieve 16 mpg in it. With bigger digits in the model nomenclature come greater expectations.

At $77,795 to start, the 2020 GLE580 will be the most expensive GLE in the lineup when it goes on this fall and will likely stay that way until the 2021 AMG GLE53 arrives late next year (although, with only 429 horsepower, the GLE53 might not be the top dog). That makes the GLE580 nearly 21 grand more than a base GLE350 with the nonhybrid turbocharged inline-four, and more than 16 grand above the GLE450. For that, you get real leather instead of synthetic MB-Tex, the AMG Line exterior package, an adaptive air suspension, and more features that Mercedes has not yet specified. The fully independent E-Active Body Control suspension will be optional. But for those who love luxury SUVs with fat tires, the most important takeaway is that Mercedes will keep giving you the V-8s you crave, now and well into the future—and don't worry, the upcoming AMG GLE63 will still use a V-8, too.

This is a surprise, to have a none AMG model sitting between the 53 and 63.

This model is a blatant play or a direct answer to the U.S. market. It will be very popular is the chatter on MBWorld is any indication.

It's quite coincidental that Mercedes unveils this GLE580 model on the same day as BMW bringing out a more powerful X5 M50i model!!! There must be spies working in each manufacturer lol. The Merc looks to be at a disadvantage in power and torque to the new BMW. But its 6000USD cheaper than the X5.

Agreed, not a real AMG, but I love my C 43. Has perfect amount of power, and I got the optional exhaust which sounds awesome, though obviously not as good as the V8s.

Only less power and torque than the X5 M50i if you ignore the ISG!

Very good review of GLE fitted with the E- Active Body Control suspension which seems to transform the cars dynamic and ride behavior into something class leading according to this guy. He has a lot of positive things to say.

I hope they bring it to South Africa, but I have my doubts.
