This beautiful photo showcase just how symmetrical and simplified the surface on top of the transmission tunnel is. Wonderful forward thinkingness by Wagoner.

Rob, it's less about LHD vs RHD - sure it's still a consideration because a single hardware unit can be software-configured to work in either orientation - but more about fitment across several models using one piece of hardware.[/QUOTE...
Interesting, I somehow thought they would use a different piece of hardware in the A, E, GLE and for sure S. So you are saying it is the same one - in all three? Sure that would be cost saving if the quality was the same in the S as the A. But if it is expensive if the quality is the same in the A as the S! Ha ha...

Or are you saying that the A and the GLE are the same, both being MBUX, and same hardware?

Don't count on it. Volvo's SPA platform is not engineered to fit anything that big.
Yes, everyone says that when I bring this engine-sharing idea up. We can live in hope though. It's big under that XC90 bonnet, maybe they could make a plan...

Wow the X5 and Cayenne each have like a kazillian buttons on their center consoles surrounding the gearlever. It can be a safety hazard in my opinion as you have to look continuously downwards to make sure you select the correct button to engage the handbrake.

I imagine the driver has already came to a complete and safe stop before looking down and either engaging or disengaging the e-brake because I doubt the driver would do that while in motion. But I think that's besides the point because a) the e-brake toggle switch is relatively big, and b) most major physical buttons that one uses often can be determined by feel.

Actually is more dangerous to stare at a screen in order to see what you have activated. MB solution makes you look twice, first you look down for the button and after you look on the screen to see whatever you're changing.

I have a different experience to this in my E class I do 75 percent of my changes via the touchpads on the steering wheel..

And when I played with the MBUX I found it to be even more responsive then in my E plus you can just use Hey Mercedes.

I don't even remember using the centre touchpad when I drove the A ...I just played with it in the showroom.

WOW! Looks so agressive. Like it! Looking forward for the real AMG that should look even better and more brutal.

What a nonsense argument. All these functions below the physical buttons in the X5 are available in the GLE too. Only hidden in submenus of the UI, where you actually have to go look for them, which takes more time and thus is more 'dangerous'.

Lol, how do you feel about those handles in the Cayenne?

Not that my opinion is in any way relevant, but since you ask....

They also belong in a Porsche Cayenne, Jaguar F Pace (fake looking), Jaguar E Pace (passenger side) and Audi TT. LOL!

1 = kneepads
2 = handles, yes. Pretty ugly and out of place. The whole interior of the Porsche looks generic and uninspired to me. Like a VW with Porsche logos, which it is.
3 = a hole in the dash, can't make any more of it
4 = yeah you could call it a handle, but I see it more like a design thingy and hardly a handle. Either way, it's ugly like the whole car is.

I agree, it does look very symmetrical and attractive, but as @martinbo once pointed out - maybe it’s desinged this way in order to cut back on costs as this one layout could be used in both RHD and LHD vehicles

If cost cutting was the primary driver behind the design it entire transmission tunnel would look very different. See the Cayenne as an example.

In the Porsche handles don't have aluminuim trim, are not covered by leather that extends to the arm rest, their colour is always black regardless of upholstery.

Secondly, you can never remove cost efficiencies from design in the automotive world. There are several more blatant cost cutting measures in new Audi and BMW models.

Show me one company that won't cut back on cost?

If a company didn't cut back on cost it would be at a loss.

Anyways I find this about Mercedes or the GLE being cost saving due to it having a straight screen or a nice clean straight centre console a bit of a joke.

If you follow Mercedes it has 90 percent been like that that's a Mercedes design element and philosophy.

I Qoute my self a Mercedes fan since the W123 and W126 days and till today I can not remember a design that was not having a centre console being the way they are.

That's almost 40 years roughly so now all of a sudden its cost saving ...
