GLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (X166)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Klasse

I was not very fond of the new GL, yet I think I like it quite alot! Given even from these really nice photo's one can clearly see it will never be quite a real competitor to THE daddy, the Range Rover. Only the alternative to the worlds finest BIG - SUV;)

And there is a new RR on it's way:)

Guys you know the cars won't be delivered to customers that way. Pre-production problem oversight at the worst. My problem is that no one caught that before the pictures were shot.

Anyway this thing is gorgeous. Going on the leaked photo of the new Range Rover the GL may have pulled ahead in exterior styling. Now we have to see the official pics of the RR, especially the interior. Its design will still hold an edge over the GL I'm sure, if not the materials.

No. The Range Rover Vogue will not hold an edge. Range Rovers are like Maserati, "want to have because status" but in reality car of bad quality and reliablity. At least the next Quattroporte looks promissing, but the next RR Vogue looks bland and generic, especially the front. The GL is the best luxury XL SUV now. Next could be next Q7.

I mean in interior design, not reliability and quality. We all know how RR does in those areas. It is the interior design where the RR will hold an advantage IMO.

F@ckiing idiots do a photo angle pointing straight at the roof and there's a horrible panel misalignment/sag that just so happens to be in that very area? From the people prepping the car, to the photographer taking hours of pics to get the right angle, to the editors, to the quality control (or lack thereof), NOBODY could notice that thing? Who pays these people?

Sad to see the ML rear bumper treatment with hidden exhaust. Booo. Overall, the side panels are too busy. The ML and GL share the driver's door sheet metal, so I see why the crease stays. But the accent crease lookes awkward with the ponton arch. And especially awkward on the 550 where it intersects the wider fender attachment. The crease that is lower which runs forward from the ponton arch is more than enough, along with the sublt crease the runs above the door handles. The chrome skid guard just looks strange. Doesn't flow into the design. Middle row needed to offer slide adjustment and captians chair option. Neither happened. Interior is verbatim M-class, so yawn.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class at Atlanta Classic Cars!

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was at the dealership yesterday for our pre-launch training. This was my first look at the redesigned GL-Class and it was everything I expected it to be! The GL-Class looks sleeker, sportier and a lot more luxurious. There are strong similarities to the all-new ML-Class and I love everything about that vehicle!

This particular vehicle is a 2013 GL350 Bluetec in Arctic White with Grey MB Tex Interior. It has the Premium 2 Package, Driver Assistance Package, Lighting Package, 3-Zone Climate Control, Rear entertainment system and the optional two-tone 20″ Wheels.

The running boards are now slightly narrower so you won’t dirty your pants as you exit
the vehicle when you step over them.

This is the new MB-Tex with perforations. It looks very much like leather.

You can see the controls for the 3-zone climate control on this vehicle. This is the factory
rear-seat entertainment system that allows for DVDs to be played from the front or the rear of the vehicle.

Both sides of the second row seat now fold and tumble. The handles for this operation
are much larger and there is an option for this to be power. (Power EASY-ENTRY)

The cargo area for the new GL-Class is now a little wider to accommodate golf clubs!
This is enough cargo space for all of the training materials needed for the whole state of Georgia!

The Panoramic roof is now optional for the 2013 GL-Class.

This vehicle has the Lighting Package. You can pick it out based on the upper ribbon of
LEDs and the headlamp washing doors below the lights.

These tail lights are beautiful! They are also LED so they are faster than conventional
tail lights, giving the person behind you as much as an extra 0.1 seconds to stop!

The 2013 GL-Class is scheduled to arrive in September with the GL450 and GL550. The GL350 Bluetec will follow in October and the all-new GL63 AMG in the first quarter of 2013!

Calm despite the storm: The new GL is the quietest vehicle in the whole of the SUV world

Top aeroacoustic in S-Class quality

As the very first car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz has researched the psychoacoustic qualities of vehicles to find out more about aeroacoustic. Here both high frequencies of wind noise as well as the contribution of low frequencies, and in particular the audibility of voices was examined and optimised. During their research, the engineers devoted themselves intensively to the airflow around the vehicle body, the sealing systems on windows and doors as well as the body-in-white. The main focus of such work is not just on the absolute sonic pressure (dB (A)). The aim is rather to generate acoustic which is as homogenous and harmonious as possible, where neither definite frequency ranges nor individual vehicle components or sectors are dominant, as from a speed of about 120 km/h the wind noises are the dominant acoustic quantity. Tyre or engine noises are relegated to the background. Individual aeroacoustic measures taken:

optimised A-pillar and housing of outside mirror
reinforcement of the underbody to avoid low-frequency noises
acoustic front windscreen and optional acoustic side windows made with multilayer glass technology to provide great noise insulation
use of improved sealing systems with optimised lip seals
additional aeroacoustic sealing levels in rear compartment
improved clamping for door windows

Just how successful the aeroacoustic engineers were in tuning the GL "resonance box" can be seen by a comparison with the S-Class: The objective and subjective impression of noise lies at the same pleasant level for both vehicles. However, achieving these top results with the GL requires a great deal more effort than with the luxury saloon. On the one hand because of its typical SUV shape and the large front surface.

On the other hand, the full-size SUV provides excellent acoustic for seven passengers sitting in three rows even under unfavourable conditions as the off-road vehicle can be used in a much wider variety of situations than a saloon – also including travelling in remote areas far away from sealed roads.

Clear proof of the importance of aeroacoustic for Mercedes-Benz is shown by the development of new testing plants. Normal wind tunnels have reached their physical limits as far as the further optimisation of aeroacoustic is concerned as here the interference from the testing equipment is superimposed on the test results. To put it briefly: Mercedes-Benz vehicles like the GL-Class now run so quietly that innovative developments using the present testing equipment would require a great deal of effort to achieve. That is why at the moment a revolutionary interference-optimised wind tunnel is being built at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre (MTC) in Sindelfingen. The testing installation will be opened in 2013 and is a guarantee for future automotive development that the company will continue to retain its lead in aeroacoustic over its competitors.
