2015 GL-Class Gets New Twin-Turbo V6 Engine
Currently, the lowest-powered Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (X166) is the GL 350 BlueTec, which is powered by a turbocharged V6 diesel engine with 258 Hp and 620 Nm (457 lb ft) of torque.

In Europe, fans of gasoline engines in the massive luxury SUV are only met by the GL 500 and the GL 63 AMG, both of which are powered by twin-turbocharged V8 engines with 4.7 and 5.5-liters of displacement, respectively.

The United States market is actually getting a wider engine range on the GL-Class, with the 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V8 being available in two stages of tune, one for the GL 550 (GL 500 in Europe) and one for the GL 450, but that will be soon replaced by a twin-turbocharged three-liter V6 with the same horsepower and torque figures as the V8.

Not to leave Europe behind, it seems that the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class will also get a twin-turbocharged three-liter V6 that runs on gasoline as well, with the GL 400 to become the base gasoline engine from MY 2015 models onwards.

In essence, the new Mercedes-Benz GL 400 uses the same engine as the upcoming and US-only GL 450, but in a lower state of tune.

In other words, the internally-codenamed M276 DELA 30 on the EU-only GL 400 is to offer 333 hp and 480 Nm (354 lb ft) of torque, some 34 hp and 70 Nm (52 lb ft) of torque less than the US-only GL 450.

Available to order from tomorrow but reaching the dealerships in September, the Mercedes-Benz GL 400 4Matic will apparently use just 9.2 liters per 100 km (25.6 mpg) and have a starting price of EUR 76160 in Germany, including VAT.

The GL Pullman, based on the next generation GL-Class (X167), might appear around 2019? :)
It's rumored to be as spacious in the rear as the Maybach 62 while the bespoke styling may (slightly?) differ from the standard GL.

^ That's the rumored 3.0L straight six expected in a few years time. Specs are not yet known. Here's a better render of the 2019 GL 600 Pullman, possibly also from Lagonda? :)

Luxury SUVs rendered for Motor Revue - April 2014

PS. Gorden Wagener probably wouldn't sign off on the GL above:

Maybe adding a chrome S-Class style version of the grill will make it more dignified. Not sure this kind of vehicle makes sense but it will be very popular here in the Middle East where they love large sized SUV's!

Maybach may become an offroader in form of GL-Maybach!

Mercedes-Benz to add Maybach trim line to models beyond S-Class – and the first could be a GL-Class offroader

Mercedes-Benz is planning a 'super-luxury' version of its GL-Class seven-seat SUV (pictured) as part of the launch of the Maybach sub-brand. That's the clear message behind comments from senior Mercedes-Benz insiders speaking at last week's Italian launch of the new S-Class coupe.

The move sees Maybach set to become to luxury, what AMG is for performance for the Daimler brand. And SUVs appear key to the Maybach 'comeback'.

Although not a return to models badged Maybach in their own right, the plan will see a number of models offered at super-luxury specification levels and/or standalone chassis configurations.

The first new Maybach-badged model will be a stretched long-wheelbase S-Class. One of six configurations built on the new W222 series S-Class architecture, the 'S-Class by Maybach' will remain a two-row car, unlike the three-row Pullman ultra-long-wheelbase that will top-off the big Benz sedan line-up.

A GL-based SUV/offroader is also on the cards.

Two other potential 'by Maybach' models have also been floated: a development of the just-released S-Class Coupe and from left-field, a version of the MLC-Class SUV coupe.

If the 'GL-Class by Maybach' makes it to market, it will retain existing GL architecture but receive styling tweaks and a luxury makeover. It will not, however, be S-Class based as has been reported elsewhere. That said, it could utilise S-Class technology such as Magic Body Control semi-active suspension and Curve Tilting.

Speaking at the S-Class coupe launch, Mercedes-Benz board member in charge of research and development, Dr Thomas Weber, would not comment in detail on the expansion of the Maybach brand but was happy to talk in general terms.

"First of all it's clear that we stop the old Maybach. [But] There is still a good brand image linked to Maybach – so stay tuned to what we plan to do with this brand," Weber told motoring.com.au.

"Mercedes is the mother brand and we have Mercedes-AMG [for performance]. Could it be an idea to go in a similar direction [with Maybach]?

"What does Mercedes [in its own right] stand for? Do we need the most luxurious vehicles in our line-up [to be] an addition compared to AMG... [It] could be a good idea...

"[But] It is not for official confirmation [today]," Weber teased.

The 'GL-Class by Maybach' in particular would allow Mercedes-Benz to quickly respond to super-luxury SUVs in development from Bentley, Lamborghini and even Mercedes-Benz tuners such as Brabus.

Mercedes-Benz insiders commented that uber-SUVs were one of the most common products of AMG's Performance Studio customisation division.

Key markets for the 'GL-Class by Maybach' would include the Middle East, Russia and the USA.

"Why not [apply Maybach to GL]," Weber responded to motoring.com.au's questioning.

"Of course we see the luxurious [SUV] segment has huge growing potential, and the answer then is why not? The question is how fast and how parallel we can go with production for something like this.

"You will see more in the months to come and maybe next year will be the year of our SUV offensive," Weber stated.

Mercedes To Launch Ultra Luxury GL-Class?

The internet is abuzz with rumors of Mercedes Benz announcing an ultra luxury variant of the GL-Class under the Maybach moniker. Although Maybach may have failed as a separate company, the name still holds immense value in most parts of the world. Following up the S-Class Maybach Edition may be an all new super luxury variant of the GL-Class. With another model to sport the Maybach name, it looks like the German manufacturer plans on converting the Maybach moniker into a sub brand similar to its performance division, AMG.
