So is this love affair now just about appearances?

I'm glad Land Rover is letting the Defender die with some dignity ......the G Class is at serious risk of becoming the 'Bruce Jenner' of the Mercedes family.

G500 4x4² concept

Mercedes-Benz G500 reportedly getting twin-turbo V8 4.0 engine with 422 PS
Engine change commanded by incoming Euro 6 regulations
[update] Wolf-Dieter Kurz, Vice President Product Group SUVs and Sportscars at Mercedes-Benz told Autovisie the G500 is indeed getting the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine. The output has not been finalized but he said it should be close to 422 PS and will be available towards the end of the year.

A new report indicates Mercedes-Benz is planning an engine change for the G500 off-roader.

Mercedes-Benz will allegedly drop the 387 PS 5.5-liter V8 engine of the existing G500 to make room for the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo motor borrowed from the AMG GT and C63. This decision has been taken in order to meet the incoming Euro 6 regulations which will come into effect in September. It's actually the same 422 PS (310 kW) engine configuration as seen in the G500 4x4² concept which was unveiled last month at the Geneva Motor Show.

We remind you that a major overhaul is being planned for the G-Glass and will reportedly come out in 2017 bringing a weight loss of more than 200 kg (441 lbs). The car is expected to be 100mm wider and should feature a three- or four-link front suspension, updated electro-mechanical steering system along with inline-six 3.0-liter gasoline and diesel engines which will debut next year in the new E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class facelift

New special model announced
Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off the refreshed G-Class family.

Probably the most important improvement goes for the G500 version that receives the new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine of the company that also powers the G500 4x4² concept. It produces 422 PS (310 kW) and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque between 2250 and 4750 rpm. These power figures grant the off-roader with a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 5.9 seconds.

The G350d variant benefits from a hike in output from 211 PS (155 kW) to 245 PS (180 kW), with its torque climbing from 540 (399 lb-ft) to 600 Nm (443 lb-ft). This results in an improved 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 8.9 seconds.

The AMG models also get a power boost with the G 63 now delivering 571 PS (420 kW) or an extra 27 PS (20 kW) with torque of 760 Nm (561 lb-ft). The G 65 on the other hand now has 630 PS (463 kW) instead of 612 PS (450 kW) with a peak torque of 1000 Nm (738 lb-ft).

Visually, the facelifted G350d and G500 models are getting restyled bumpers and standard AMG flared wheel arches in the color of the vehicle. The G350d also comes as standard with 18-inch five-spoke light-alloy wheels.

Mercedes-Benz is also introducing the new AMG EDITION 463 special model, giving the G-Class “an impressive sporty look”. The interior specification includes a two-tone instrument panel, two-tone leather seats with side bolsters in carbon-look leather and contrasting topstitching, seat and door center panels in a diamond design, carbon-fiber trim and door pulls in nappa leather. On the outside the producer has installed a stainless steel underguard, AMG sport stripes along the sides, a protective-strip insert with black aluminum look and 21?inch forged wheels.

Mercedes is really striking while the iron is hot. The G is selling like hotcakes and Mercedes continually improving it. Great to see.

It has now blatantly become a shameless fashion accessory .....which I do find irritating .......but just to prove that I'm no hipster, (with everything inside me telling me to resist temptation and fight against it) I would really love that red one!

DMC is celebrating their fifth anniversary in Hong Kong by unveiling the limited edition G88.

Based on the Mercedes G-Class, the G88 features a ventilated carbon fiber hood, a carbon fiber spare tire cover and a roof-mounted spoiler. The model can also be equipped with a wide body kit and 23- to 25-inch forged alloy wheels.

The interior carries over but customers can also order everything from carbon fiber trim to Ostrich or Stingray sourced leather upholstery.

DMC was coy on performance specifications but confirmed the engine features new pistons, connection rods, and bearings. The model also has a new crankshaft and a sports exhaust system. Thanks to these modifications, the model can produce up to 700 PS (515 kW).

Production will be limited to five units and each model will be painted a unique color to ensure exclusivity.

Interesting... because yesterday when I drove through the car wash with the G, I got sprayed in the face with water. Yes, all windows were closed.

Does somebody have that angles picture for older G models, to compare with new one?

@lukeswiss go to your dealer, explain them your problem.

^Probably some more fine tuning to do.

They've already had to reposition the passenger door. Assembled by hand, I guess.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G class SUV goes on sale this month.

G class gets downsized V-8, new AMG version for 2016

FRANKFURT -- Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon expects sales of the G-class SUV to jump, due to a new base engine and a second AMG version for 2016.

"We're going to sell more Gs this year than we ever have in the U.S. market, and we'll sell more next year than we have this year," Cannon said on the sidelines of the Frankfurt auto show. The 2016 models go on sale this month.

G-class sales totaled 3,090 in 2014, the second highest since U.S. sales began in late 2001. Through September, G-class sales were 2,438, up 11 percent.

The G class, a military-style SUV that dates to 1979, has few visible changes for 2016. Most notable are a new front bumper, updated instrument cluster design and bright paint colors such as purple, orange and "alien green."

Bigger changes are under the hood. The base G550 gets a downsized engine: a new 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 416 hp, but consumes 17 percent less fuel than the former 5.5-liter, 382-hp V-8. The 2016 G550 starts at $120,825, including shipping, up about 4 percent from the prior model.

The G class also gets a second AMG high-performance model, the G65, with a 6.0-liter, V-12 engine that puts out 621 hp. Prices start at $218,825, including shipping.

Cannon called the G65 the "big daddy" of Mercedes' SUV lineup, and predicted, "We'll have demand for it." Mercedes will be cautious about the volume "because dealers don't like having a $200,000 car sitting on their lots."

The G63, the nameplate's continuing AMG model, keeps its 5.5-liter V-8 for 2016 but gains power, now producing 563 hp.

The G class has the highest AMG mix in Mercedes' lineup: about 60 percent of U.S. sales. Cannon said that mix could skew higher.
