I’ve seen one in real…

What an exceptional bad looking Mercedes-Benz. It’s big, unflattering high and rather formless. Not to mention that terrible -looking aged in no time- interior.

I caught a first, rather distant "real-life environment" glimpse of an EQS yesterday. In a metallic black tone with, I suspect, the AMG package. My initial thoughts confirmed, I found it more odd than ugly. And strangely, not decidedly "modern looking". Not untypically M-B aft the front door handles. I am left a bit "Meh", actually.

Exactly how I see it in my nightmares.
The interior instead has the wow factor, they achieved that and if it is dated quickly it is yet to be seen.
At least it will have its moment of splendor, and that moment is now

The body panel fit is terrible. I don't understand why this is a problem on this car.

Ehh even $170000 vehicles can run into this problem.

Maybe cause it is a horrible idea? Putting a big shiny glass angled at your face just to give fake impression of a big screen when it is just two normal ones. Besides playing to the peanut gallery, it has no f#cking function whatsoever.

On another note, while I was not exhaustive about it, I couldn't recall another 100k car that took more than 6 secs for 0-100kmh. Anyone else knows of one?
It actually has 3 screens, instruments, a center screen, and a passenger screen, I do get your point, it's not one giant screen but 3 under one large glass pane, but it probably would have been much more expensive to have 1x large screen from the driver all the way to the passenger and if something had to go wrong with one screen at least with 3x seperate screens then the others would still work.

At that price point, it's hard to forgive but easy to understand as Lucid is a start-up. But with an established marque like Mercedes-Benz, it's hard to forgive and rather baffling. Here's hoping that it's just 1st year teething issues for both cars and that it'll be sorted out in short order.

Does anyone actually like using touchscreens in cars?
I'd rather my old keyboard phones too! I am fairly young and I absolutely hate it. I also dislike the touchpad. The Command control knob was so much better, you didn't have to fully look, you heard it move, saw it move, the mouse, it's not as easy to see which line the touchpad has you on, let alone, driving, lean over to touch....really don't think it's an improvement and the voice just isn't there yet. MBUX with command controller/i drive knob any day.

What maybe a wow factor for some, maybe totally absurd for others ?

I guess when all new cars has these clean minimalistic interiors with these f#cking screens then this is not a novelty anymore and they will start giving us back fysical buttons for the essential functions. Well, if they haven’t invented a new better alternative then to reach essential functions in a instant…

I doubt you going to go back to buttons its just going to get less soon the indicator and wipers and so on will be buttons ...look at tesla the horn is a button.

Its just going to be like phones one large screen full stop...

When phones became full screen it was hated now nobody would use a button phone its going to be same in 5 years or so people will forget buttons in cars i am not fully in favour

Yes i like touch screens but would like essential buttons but yeah we can see the trend

But driving a car is not the same as playing with a phone. You must look at the road when driving, you can’t look at the screen for to long. And you often need the functions instantly (for example the horn….)

I agree with you their should be few main buttons but yeah we can see where the whole trend is heading

And Audi is right too. Customers are going to reward them for making their cars more real world user friendly. These plastic black switches that move everything when you touch them are disgusting also.

The fond of the letters on the back/side bothers me hugely. Looks disgusting, and too big.

I can't wait for the inevitable iX vs EQS tests. That's going to be really interesting.

Well, I spent some time in the passenger seat and the rear seat of a base model EQS450+ and an EQS580 yesterday. Just some quick notes:

-I really don't find this car to be ugly at all. It's huge so it actually ends up having some presence, imo. Still not winning any beauty contests, especially compared to the S580 I drove directly after for about an hour. More on that car later...
-The rear wheel steering is quite noticeable from all seating positions.
-It's another degree quieter than the S580, especially on the base wheel/tire configuration.
-The rear seat is more snug than is optimal. Taller people (over 6ft 2") will find headroom to be lacking and there's no doubt that the seat is positioned too low. The EQS580 had adjustable rear seats which helped, especially given the seatbacks in the EQS450+ are fairly upright. I was plenty comfortable, for the record, just not S580 comfortable.
-Interior materials seemed better than the S580 overall
-The Hyperscreen works well but has a steep learning curve. The EQS580 had finger prints absolutely everywhere since people were were exploring the system frequently. Interestingly enough, the base screen in the EQS450+ looked great. I wouldn't feel like I was missing out.
-Frontward visibility is compromised by the high dash
-Overall, I found the passenger experience to be everything a luxury car should be. I felt cosseted and the car felt very well built. If the exterior isn't a showstopper then I think the average Mercedes customer will find themselves right at home once they figure out the infotainment system.

I won't get behind the wheel until the very end of the month, but consider my interest unexpectedly piqued. I need to see the finished EQS SUV and drive a EQS 53 before I decide if MB will get my EV money. I already have an SL reserved and own a G-wagen and that's enough MB for my garage. Still not completely in love with any EVs as of today...excited to see what BMW and Audi bring to the table.
