Some details of the M256 engine in upcoming E50 AMG model revealed:
NEW MERCEDES-AMG E 50 4MATIC WITH M 256 SERIES 6-CYLINDER
According to current rumors, Mercedes-AMG is to prepare an E 50 4MATIC with a new M 256 engine as a series 6-cylinder with 435 hp and E-Turbo with 20 hp. The engine has a 48 volt electrical system as well as an integrated starter generator ISG.

The new in-line cylinder petrol engine with 2.999 cm² can completely dispense with a belt drive for auxiliary units at the end of the engine, which makes the unit almost as compact as a four-cylinder engine.
The water pump and the climate compressor are completely electrically powered by the new 48 V electrical system. A still existing 12 volt mains supplies the loads, such as lighting, cockpit, infotainment and the necessary control units.
The driving performance of the M 256 engine is above the still current V8 petrol engine M 278, with the torque of the M 256 at 530 Nm. The new engine is charged by 2 stages until the large exhaust gas turbocharger starts and the phase is bridged by an additional electrical compressor. The electric turbocharger accelerates within 300 milliseconds to 70,000 revolutions and provides for a lot of dynamics without turbocharger.
Integrated starter generator - ISG
Another integrated component of the new M 256 motor is an integrated starter generator - ISG for short - not only as an electrical generator, the ISG also takes on hydride functions and makes a conventional starter unnecessary. As the manufacturer already showed us in October 2016 , the system can boast a maximum of 20 hp with 220 Nm of torque, ideal for kick-down, recuperation or sailing.
One of the comfort features of the ISG is an almost imperceptible start of the engine. For the exhaust gas aftertreatment, the new in-line six-cylinder petrol engine also has a standard particulate filter, which is part of the exhaust system in the underbody.
