The 4-cylinder diesel OM654 engine has some noticeable changes including a change in engine capacity according to Mercedes Passion Blog
FOUR-CYLINDER DIESEL OM 654 M COMES WITH ISG - M 254 GETS UP TO 272 HP
Thanks to EQ Boost, the new models in the E-Class family offer even more driving dynamics with significantly lower fuel consumption. The new
OM 654 M four-cylinder diesel engine is the world's first diesel that has an integrated starter generator (
ISG ) and a 48-volt electrical system. Also new is the first four-cylinder petrol engine from Mercedes-Benz with 48 volts, ISG and additional electric compressor (
M 254 ) and thus intelligent double charging. The inline six-cylinder petrol engine (
M 256 ) available for the first time in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class also has an ISG.
The already known heart of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC + models (combined fuel consumption: 9.1-8.6 l / 100 km; combined CO 2 emissions: 209-198 g / km) * is the electrified 3.0-liter Gasoline engine with EQ boost and double charging. The integrated starter generator provides additional boost for a short time from the first turn, the so-called EQ Boost. In the four-cylinder models it has an output of 15 kW and 180 (M 254) or 200 Newton meters (OM 654) torque, in the six-cylinder models it is 16 kW and 250 Newton meters.
According to the different customer needs, Mercedes-Benz is pursuing a three-lane technology approach for sustainable mobility: EQ Boost (electrified combustion engines), EQ Power (plug-in hybrid drive) and EQ (purely battery-electric drive). The new family of engines with four- and six-cylinder petrol engines and diesels has a modular structure and is consequently designed for electrification - the so-called Family of Modular Engines (FAME). Its key features are a uniform cylinder distance of 90 millimeters and the same interfaces to the vehicle. The basic engines can be combined with both ISG and hybrid drive trains. By scaling the latest technologies and electrification options from 12 volts to 48 volts to high-voltage plug-in applications, a suitable drive can be dimensioned for every vehicle. This also enables flexible production.
EVERY MERCEDES WITH ISG IS A MILD HYBRID
In 2017 Mercedes-Benz was the first car manufacturer to use the integrated starter generator in production vehicles. The unit combines starter and generator in a powerful electric machine, which is placed between the internal combustion engine and the transmission. Combined with the 48-volt electrical system, the EQ Boost technology enables consumption savings and CO 2-Reductions that were previously only possible with high-voltage hybrid technology. These include the typical hybrid functions "recuperation", "boosting" and "sailing". Because the ISG can also shift the load points, the combustion engine always works in a favorable map. Every Mercedes with ISG becomes a mild hybrid. An additional advantage of the 48-volt electrical system: it increases comfort. The starter generator brings the internal combustion engine to idling speed very quickly and evenly, which makes the starting process even smoother. The restart from sailing is hardly noticeable.
SECOND GENERATION ISG AND FURTHER DEVELOPED 9G-TRONIC
The second starts in the E-Class modelsGeneration of the integrated starter generator. Here, the electric machine is no longer part of the engine, but of the transmission. This makes it easier to combine the innovative technology with different motors. Accordingly, the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission was further developed and is initially used in the four-cylinder engines. The electric motor, power electronics and transmission cooler have moved to the transmission. This means that cables that were previously required can be dispensed with, resulting in space and weight advantages. The efficiency of the transmission also increases. Example: The improved interaction with the electric auxiliary oil pump reduces the delivery volume of the mechanical pump by 30 percent. The new generation of fully integrated transmission control with a multicore processor and new assembly and connection technology also make a contribution to increasing efficiency. Despite the increased computing power, the number of electrical interfaces was drastically reduced and the weight of the transmission control was reduced by 30 percent.
WORLD'S FIRST DIESEL ENGINE WITH ISG: OM 654 M WITH UP TO 265 HP
The new four-cylinder
OM 654 M diesel engine
with second-generation
ISG and 48-volt electrical system develops a maximum output of
up to 195 kW (265 hp) and a maximum torque of
550 Newton meters . When accelerating, an additional 15 kW and 180 Newton meters are available. In the course of electrification, the proven OM 654 diesel engine was fundamentally developed further. Thanks to a new crankshaft, the volume grew from 1,950 cm³ to 1,993 cm³ . The injection pressure rose from 2,500 to 2,700 bar. The particularly quick response and the even power delivery ensure water-cooled two-stage turbochargers, both of which now have a variable turbine geometry.
Exhaust gas aftertreatment is also expanded on the OM 654 M. Its components include:
- a close-coupled NOX storage catalytic converter to reduce nitrogen oxides
- a DPF (diesel particulate filter with a special coating to also reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides)
- an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction; with metered amount of AdBlue ® ) and an additional SCR catalytic converter in the underbody of the vehicle with separately metered amount of AdBlue ®
FIRST FOUR-CYLINDER PETROL ENGINE WITH ISG FROM MERCEDES-BENZ: M 254 WITH UP TO 272 HP
The newly developed
M 254 four-cylinder petrol engine also features the second generation ISG . It delivers up to 200 kW (
272 hp ) and develops a maximum torque of
400 Newton meters . The EQ Boost briefly delivers an additional 15 kW and 180 Newton meters. For the first time, the M 254 combines all innovations of the modular engine family (FAME) in one unit. These include the cylinder coating NANOSLIDE ® , the CONICSHAPE ® cylinder honing (trumpet honing ) and the exhaust gas aftertreatment placed directly on the engine.
Another innovation is the new segment loader with switchable flood connection. The completely redeveloped segment turbocharger of the M 254 resulted from the collaboration of the Mercedes-Benz turbocharger development and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. The segment loader enables new standards in terms of power delivery in combination with high efficiency. This can be experienced through an even more spontaneous response to the charge. An additional electric compressor builds up the boost pressure quickly when required - especially at low engine speeds - and thus contributes to a very dynamic response. The combination of precise control technology and the efficient double charging concept in the M 254 also enables the engine output to be increased by up to 30 kW (41 hp) for up to 30 seconds.
The range of electrified petrol engines is rounded off by the inline six-cylinder M 256 with ISG, which is available for the first time in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class models. With up to 16 kW and 250 Newton meters of additional electrical power and 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard, it promotes the sporty character of the E-Class.
TYPICAL AMG PERFORMANCE: 3.0-LITER INLINE SIX-CYLINDER WITH EQ BOOST
Performance a sports car also guarantees the alreadyelectrified AMG 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with EQ Boost starter generator and double charging. In the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC + models, the engine continues to produce well-known 320 kW (435 hp) and provides a maximum torque of 520 Newton meters. The starter generator briefly delivers an additional 16 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. With its support, the electric auxiliary compressor (eZV) builds up high boost pressure without any delay when starting, which means that the torque for acceleration accelerates faster until the large exhaust gas turbocharger starts. As a result, the AMG six-cylinder offers extremely spontaneous and highly dynamic response without turbo lag. The sporty characteristics are emphasized by the EQ Boost starter generator and the intelligent double charging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an additional electric compressor. All together serves one purpose: to increase the typical AMG performance and driving dynamics while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
