Daimler may want to consider halting any capacity expansion and just focusing on maximizing value per unit.
MB has increased value per unit a lot over the past few years with just reducing repair costs.

Those numbers would be most useful if per unit profits were also taken into account. In 1986, most people paid list or very close to it, unlike now where MSRP on an MB carries as much weight as a Cadillac's.

Do is see it right, or do my eyes lie?
SportAuto had the chance to drive the E63 before anyone else, and they handed it to a woman?

The point that we are missing is that MB builds the cars with a huge list of options for the rest of the world, therefore, in relation to the US market, these costs are irrelevant since there is no added expense in allowing customers here to order something already available everywhere else.
Personally, I'd rather have a higher price, less options, and a car that you never ever have to apologize for. Sell fewer, but make more on each individual car. Thus having much stronger resale values.
It'd be hard to change now. But I agree they should. Especially in light of the economy.
The point you're missing is the fact that those cars for around the world are made differently than the ones here. To offer more options for the US market will drive the costs of the cars up, not to mention the demographic that actually buys the E doesn't care for many of those options.
This is like giving the option for V8 in a Toyota Camry. Sure, some people will check off that option, but most people are just gonna buy the regular camry cuz they just need a car to drive.
The problem is not offering more options, but the dealers getting stuck with unpopular options after a leas ends. The US market is too heavy on leases to offer too much customization. Also majority of the people here don't order their car, they just buy/lease it off the lot.

Nate, this is exactly the answer to the question you just asked me. Like I said, you give the possibility for some weird ass option and someone will actually take it.
The car is not yet revealed, fully! but as you see above some nice guy from Mercedes let us catch a glimpse! Of course we are familiar with AMG upgrades, things like new sportier aprons, double twin exhausts, lower firmer suspension and AMG designer wheels … , but the best thing is what’s under the bonnet. A 6.2 liter muscular V8 which checks out 525 HP.

Looks like that the new Mercedes Benz E63 AMG has won a prize in Germany long before it’s released! It’s been picked as the sport car of 2009 between 260 vehicles divided in 16 series and 10 tuning categories. -Damn, AMG is not playing anymore.
That's not true. The E63 AMG is the main prize in a lottery that accompanies Sport Auto's anual reader's choice award. It hasn't won any award jet.
