Mercedes-Benz Citan gets Euro 6 engines, new optional equipment

e8a183ea3bef57924ee31079f3d39909.webp

Mercedes-Benz has announced that the Citan urban delivery van is now Euro 6 compliant and is available with new optional extras.
Mercedes-Benz Citan vehicles registered as passenger cars will comply with the Euro 6 emissions regulation as standard. Anyone buying a Citan registered as a commercial vehicle from this time will also be able to specify Euro 6 compliance as an option, more than a year before this becomes a legal obligation.

All Citan models with diesel engine achieve Euro 6 simply through internal engine measures and a storage-type NOx catalytic converter, without the need for complex SCR technology. This means drivers will no longer have to worry about using AdBlue as an extra service fluid.

Additionally, all Euro 6-compliant Citan vehicles get the BlueEfficiency package as standard. Thanks to an ECO start/stop function, the package lowers fuel consumption for the diesel models to 4.3 l/100 km (65.7 mpg UK or 54.7 mpg US), according to the NEDC standard.

Modifications for Euro 6 compliance also resulted in an increased maximum torque by 20Nm for each diesel engine, with figures now ranging between 200Nm (147lb-ft) and 260Nm (192lb-ft). Output remains unchanged at between 75PS (74hp) and 110PS (109hp).

As for new optional equipment, the Citan can be ordered with a double front passenger seat, a factory-fitted navigation system, a skylight and reversing camera. Finally, the crewbus version changes its name to the Citan Tourer, bringing the nomenclature for the Citan in line with the new Vito.

I wonder how many Merc fans care so much about the Renault Kangaroo.

This is simply a re-badged Renault ......and not exactly stellar quality.

The Smart Fortwo performed better in crash tests than this mini van.

Mercedes-Benz Citan updated

Mercedes-Benz have introduced a number of updates to the Citan. Modifications have been made with a focus on achieving the Euro 6 emissions standard. Mercedes-Benz say the Citan is now “even more practical and individual than before”.

New optional extras have been introduced, which range from a factory-fitted navigation system to a panoramic roof or reversing camera. The new touch-screen navigation system has been developed specially for the Citan, and as well as GPS navigation with maps for Western Europe. The equipment includes a USB port, a micro SD card slot, auxiliary interface and Bluetooth.

The optional reversing camera is located by the number plate holder on the rear. It is activated when reverse gear is engaged, with the camera image being shown on the interior mirror.

The new options will be available to order from June.

The Citan Traveliner will also become the Citan Tourer. All Tourer models come with the BlueEfficiency package as standard. Among other features, this includes an Eco start/stop function and improved fuel consumption for the diesel models up to a claimed 65.7 mpg on the NEDC combined cycle. Mercedes-Benz said this consumption figure, improved over the outgoing model, does not sacrifice performance.

As from June all Mercedes-Benz Citan Tourer models will comply with the Euro 6 emissions regulations as standard.

The new Euro 6 compliant engines will see an increase of maximum torque by twenty Nm for each diesel engine, to figures ranging between 200 Nm and 260 Nm. Power output remains unchanged at between 75 hp and 110 hp. All variants of the Citan equipped with diesel engines will achieve Euro 6 through internal engine measures and a storage-type NOx catalytic converter.

For other Citan variants, Euro 6 compliance will become available later in 2015 as an option, ahead of it becoming a legal obligation.

  • Stern-Partner GmbH & Co KG becomes the sponsor of zebra named "Citan" in Serengeti Park
  • Customers visit the sponsored zebra in namesake Citan vans
Uelzen – What do Daimler's smallest van and a zebra have in common? They are both robust, adaptable, popular and answer to the name "Citan". After Mercedes-Benz sales partner SternPartner GmbH & Co KG in Uelzen had become the sponsor of a zebra foal at the nearby Serengeti Park Hodenhagen and given it the name "Citan", customers were able to climb into Mercedes-Benz vans of the same name and visit the foal. Last Saturday some 100 customers availed of the chance to visit Europe's largest safari park on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath. In addition to test driving the family-friendly Citan Tourer through the expanses of the park, customers were able to examine the model variety of the small van. A special highlight: two Citan models in a zebra stripe look.

The Mercedes among small vans

Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz will continue its engagement in the small van segment persistently and has decided on the successor of its small van Citan as part of the Mercedes-Benz Vans product portfolio – including an electric version. The vehicle will again be established in cooperation with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

"The new Citan will undergo a comprehensive new development and clearly be recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz at first glance. We will provide for a distinctive brand-adequate identity in the successor of our small van", explains Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

Mercedes-Benz Vans has been offering the Citan since 2012. The small van with compact dimensions and a large load compartment is ideal for the wide range of challenges encountered in the city. Especially in the growing on-demand transit business the small van will be an even more interesting option for commercial customers. The main foundations for its success were laid by the combination of high functionality, versatility and economy, its comprehensive safety systems and high ride comfort.

With the Citan successor, Daimler AG and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi will continue their strategic cooperation which started nine years ago.

The new Mercedes-Benz T-Class: compact city van for families, active leisure enthusiasts and work

The-new-Mercedes-Benz-T-Class-compact-city-van-for-families-active-leisure-enthusiasts-and-work.webp

Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz Vans is provider of vehicles in the small-, mid- and large-size van segments, fulfilling all customer requirements for a spacious space. Now, a small van platform will be used to create a new vehicle which is tailored to the needs of families whilst also being a suitable companion for active leisure enthusiasts. Like the V-Class, which is successfully positioned in the midsize segment, Mercedes-Benz Vans will also be offering a small van for private customers from the first half of 2022. The class designation of this new model is "T-Class."

"With the new Mercedes-Benz T-Class, we will offer a vehicle which makes it possible for families and those with active pastimes to step into the Mercedes-Benz world. These customers seek attractive and practical compact vehicles – and it is precisely these demands which the new T-Class fulfils", says Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

"With the T-class’s new layout and design we achieve a fusion of functionality and desirability", says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group. "With our unique design philosophy of Sensual Purity we create an attractive family companion being the T-Class inspiring with its design, proportions and its perceived value."

Clear membership of the Mercedes-Benz family

As a completely new development, the T-Class will be clearly discernible at first glance as a member of the Mercedes-Benz family and will feature unmistakeably typical characteristics of the brand with the three-pointed star. Especially in terms of design, value, safety and connectivity, the new vehicle will bear the DNA of Mercedes-Benz.

New class, new concept

The private-customer market is the focus of the completely newly developed Mercedes-Benz T-Class. The T-Class will meet the needs of families and leisure-oriented people at an attractive price-value ratio. The letter T stands for efficient room concepts and is thus perfectly suited as a model designation for compact family vans bearing the three-pointed star.

The new Mercedes-Benz T-Class offers a large amount of space and is suited to a range of different uses, including passenger transportation as a reference within sharing services – all while not compromising on comfort. The wide-opening sliding doors on both the left and right-hand sides of the vehicle as an example allow easy and comfortable access to the interior. Alongside conventional drive systems, there will be also a fully electric version.

Mercedes-Benz Vans in the small van segment

In the small van segment, Mercedes-Benz Vans has been represented by the commercially positioned Citan since 2012. In August last year, the Vans division announced a successor to the compact urban delivery van, together with a fully-electric variant. Based on this small van platform, two vehicles will be created: while the Mercedes-Benz Citan is a no-compromise vehicle tailored to the requirements of commercial customers, the Mercedes-Benz T-Class is primarily focused towards private customers.

The T-Class and the Citan will be established in cooperation with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

Driving report Mercedes Citan 2021: Kangoo with a star
MERCEDES CITAN 2021 -- Congratulations, it's a Mercedes

We were able to drive the Citan six months before the start of series production. What the practical Renault Kangoo relative with the star can do.

With the first Citan, Mercedes had subsequently upgraded the Renault Kangoo to become a Mercedes. With the second generation, the engineers were there right from the start, so that the new one would become a real Mercedes right away.

That was definitely not the case, but the idea is so nice that we will bring this legend into the world. Namely the one according to which, in the early 2010s, a squad of Mercedes development engineers were called to compete in the Möhringen corporate headquarters in the courtyard. There the engineers stand with freshly sharpened pencils in the breast pockets of their starched white coats and are told their task: that they should develop a car up to a Mercedes. They smile because this task should bring fame and honor to them and their department. But then every smile freezes as a Renault Kangoo carriages through the barrier at the gate and rumbling to a stop in front of the troops.

Mercedes-Citan-2021-169FullWidthOdcPortrait-6479c66c-1777227.jpg

auto-motor-und-sport editor Sebastian Renz was allowed to drive the Mercedes Citan in advance.

Although there is still no agreement on who won the greater triumph - the Kangoo, that barricade fighter against the auto establishment because he managed to plug his way into the oldest automobile nobility. Or Mercedes, because it did succeed in teachning manners to the stubborn box combination. Although the affection in the alliance between Mercedes and Renault seems to be characterized by changeability in other areas, the development of this project is entering another round. The van will roll off the assembly line in Maubeuge / France as Kangoo the third, Citan the second and T-class, the first. It starts with the Kangoo, the Citan will be launched in autumn and the T-Class next spring.

First of all, the Citan

The Mercedes is therefore not quite in the standard trim on this snowy March Wednesday, when we can drive it in the more sophisticated part of Immendingen - still camouflaged, although all the smelting cannot hide that the shape, in addition to the striving for space efficiency, also that after that typical mercedes stylistics - that's what the team around design chief Gorden Wagener has taken care of. Incidentally, the bodies of the Renault and Mercedes models are not completely identical. Both are available in two wheelbases. But when the sliding and passenger doors are open, the Kangoo has an opening that is just under 1.45 meters wide, as Renault has dispensed with a fixed B-pillar on the right - a construction that seemed a bit too casual for the Daimler team.

Mercedes-Benz-Citan-Erprobungsfahrt-Immendingen-Maerz-2021-169FullWidthOdcPortrait-d4a443ad-17...jpg

Either a 1.3 liter or a 1.5 liter turbo diesel provides the drive.

The drive trains, on the other hand, are the same - 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine and 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel in different power levels, plus a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The eCitan will follow a little later. The electric motor is now understood as a matter of course, just another drive variant that is planned from the start. The battery, which weighs around 400 kilograms, is then an integral part of the body structure on the floor. To this end, Mercedes is setting up the assistance and infotainment department of the box combination much more broadly. The Citan should achieve five stars at Euro-NCAP, and it will receive the MBUX operating and infotainment.

Films and covers still impose the services of the interior decorator. Take a quick peek, isn't anyone looking? Look: The Citan is furnished with high-quality plastics in a really dairy-like manner. The ventilation nozzles, switches and buttons right through to the multi-function lever - everything like in normal Mercedes car models.

As variable as before, as comfortable as never before

In terms of variability, everything is the same as before: the rear seat can be folded down in parts, then dips down to one level in the rear footwell. As an option, the front passenger seat can be folded down and the long Citan can be furnished with two folding seats in the trunk. But they should be easier to install and remove. But even the short Citan should be enough for ambitious luggage transport with its generous standard trunk volume, which should again be around 650 liters. On the comfortable back seat - Mercedes upholstered it itself and not taken over from Renault - there is enough space for three, who can also get in comfortably through the wide-opening sliding doors. The front doors open 90 degrees - for easy entry or loading.

Mercedes-Citan-2021-169FullWidthOdcPortrait-1c5ffc59-1777228.jpg

Do you need more luggage space? No problem. Simply fold down the back seat.

So and now we can go. One press of the start button and the 1.5-liter turbodiesel gets going. It is the OM 608, which, like the entire drive train from Renault and already in its predecessor, self-ignited. But he was a lot more rumored then. Now instead of nailing it just sounds a gentle staple inwards. Once the diesel has put aside its brief hesitation, it pulls up the revs in a homogeneous and surprisingly fluffy manner. Only at 5,500 rpm would the next of the precise, but somewhat lengthy, shiftable six gears have to be sorted using the high-positioned gear lever - and even at high engine speeds the diesel does not interfere with the tone. In general, the entire Citan is excellently insulated for a box combi, even the wind only breaks gently around the box.

The tour leads over winding country roads. And how much better the Citan drives now. Yes, that has nothing in common with the clumsy, permanently braked by the ESP around curve of the shaky predecessor. With the electromechanical power steering, the box combination can be guided precisely through curves. It offers good feedback, and the Citan with the class-coordinated chassis (stiffer stabilizers, shorter springs) now lets it sway. In spite of the taut setup, it carefully puts away unevenness - much more gently and confidently than the new VW Caddy with its rigid axle, for example.

Mercedes-Benz-Citan-Erprobungsfahrt-Immendingen-Maerz-2021-169FullWidthOdcPortrait-81cf26eb-17...jpg

The front doors open 90 degrees.

Soon also as a small camper?

The career planning of the Citan could go further than the T-Class, which should also take on the role of the affordable entry-level Mercedes for families. With the current motorhome boom, could one not also imagine a camping variant - a kind of Marco Polöchen? Oh, well, well, hmm ... that's what it says, but it doesn't exactly sound as if the engineers were only just given the idea.

Ew1JVBrXIAcnC6g.webp

CONCLUSION

Well, let's see where the Citan is headed. But as quiet, agile and comfortable as it drives, it is currently a real exceptional talent in its class. Or something like this: When the Citan starts in the second half of the year, there is probably no more versatile high-roof box van.
