IMO the only way this car works is if they engineered a lot of weight out of the car. What you're saving in weight by going from a V8 to an I4 you will make up in all the hybrid equipment. Now if they came out with a truly lightweight car with 550-640hp or whatever the hp number is, they will have a firecracker on their hands. You'll never get the aural satisfaction of a V8 or I6, but you could at least deliver searing performance to make up for it, not just decent performance to just merely keep up with the M3.

M
Reading your post brings the 190E 2.5-16 to mind, weighing circa 1.250 kg. 194 hp = circa 6,4 kg/hp.
C 63 E-performance will weigh approx. 2.000 kg. 544 hp = circa 3,7 kg/hp. Even at 2.000 kg the kg/hp ratio isn't that bad. But it could indeed have been better, skipping the E-performance bit and focusing on weight saving.

Two new plug-in hybrids for the Mercedes C-Class

Available to order soon: Mercedes C 300e 4matic and C 400e 4matic (both as sedans)

Orders for two new variants of the C-Class with plug-in hybrid will be released shortly.

The C 300e can currently be ordered with 204 + 129 hp (system output 313 hp) and an electric range of up to 109 km according to WLTP. It impresses with a 3-phase on-board charger and an optional 55 KW DC charge via CCS. This variant can be ordered as a sedan and estate.
Two other variants will follow shortly:
The C 300e 4matic as a sedan with 204 hp + 129 hp and the
C 400e 4matic sedan with M254 2.0 liter 4-cylinder with 252 hp and electric motor. It is not yet known whether the electric motor in the C 400e 4matic will deliver 129 hp or, as in the GLC plug-in hybrid available from September 2022, 136 hp.

It is also interesting that the M254 combustion engine in the C 400e 4matic delivers 252 hp while the C 300 is specified with 258 hp. The power of the combustion engine is probably slightly reduced due to the increased system power to protect the 9G-Tronic transmission. The system performance will then be slightly above 350 hp.

For the time being, the C 300e 4matic and the C 400e 4matic will only be offered as sedans.

The diesel plug-in hybrid C 300de, which has also been announced for the new GLC (X254) , will probably receive the order release later in the summer.

Watched the video a few times of the C63 E-Performance at slow pace and hi-speed track testing on the overrun (Even compared it to the new M3 at track testing). Something very strange about it. It is definitely running a different soundtrack compared to the A45s. It sounds like the engineers were trying to mimic the drone-like atmosphere of an inline-6, kind of like what Ferrari has done with the new 296 GTB and their V6 mimicking the sound of a V12. 4-bangers usually don`t have that throat like drone. The internal plumbing has been rearranged for this and we will most likely hear about it, especially when the test drives start.

With the V8 C63 Mercedes AMG had a USP and arguably the best engine in the class for sure aural pleasure and character. With the new 4cylinder C63 model the M3 will now become the automatic choice cause of its superior sounding inline 6.
Just listen to that melodious 6.2 V8. This car is now a legend, the brilliant W204 C63.

Long live the V8 King.

Does Mercedes have any plans for a long-wheel-base Electric C-class for the Chinese market?

this gen C-class went through some tough material cost saving, especially interior.

Blame it on the electrification. Every German manufacturer is cutting corners somewhere else, because they have to save money for development of new electric cars, whether is an electrified version of an internal combustion car or a whole new EV platform.

People can whinge all they want about "cost-cutting". It doesn't make it factual. I do wonder what planet people are on sometimes.

New car prices have generally increased at or below inflation over the last twenty years, yet they're far more efficient, have technology which blows my mind, and have to comply with much more stringent safety requirements. And then some nerd walks around a car dealership with a phone camera and bellyaches about a bit of plastic...

Give me f***ing strength.

The part where the rear side mirrors are mounted on, looks rather unsexy: matte plastic, which is, unfortunally, extra visible because of the shiny paint.

I must say the paint at the base of the A-pillar looks as it has an "orange peel" effect. Is this really the case Mick or its just a reflection? If this is true then Mercedes have to improve the Quality Control of its paint shop, so much for this nano coating improving the finish of the final coat.

Have you not seen literally ANY new cars in the last ten years? Orange peel is on every car due to the way manufacturers have to comply with environmental regulations when painting.

I didn't notice anything like that, Rolf. It's just a reflection and probably some sort of distortion due to the distance between iPhone and object.

It's clearly "orange peel" and nothing to do with "distortion". How can you not know this? It's clearly visible in the photograph YOU took.

Yeah the only car I haven't ever seen any orange peel on is a Bentley or Rolls or the 911.

You can polish orange peel off. And the 911 and Bentleys come with it too btw. Rolls I am not sure.

You can wet sand it off, but that's the work of a good professional and very, very expensive to the point it's pointless for a regular car.
