C-Class (W205) [Official] Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W205)

The Mercedes-Benz W205 is the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Body styles: W205 (sedan), S205 (wagon/estate), C205 (coupé), A205 (cabriolet), and V205 (long-wheelbase). Production: 2014–2021, 2016–2023 (coupé/cabriolet). Model years: 2015–2021, 2017–2023 (coupé/cabriolet). Predecessor: C-Class W204. Successor: C-Class W206.
The global seat supplier for the W205 is a major, well known US/Germany based auto interior supplier. It's the first time a seat supplier has been awarded by MB to provide global volumes with closely staggered production ramp-ups across four locations (Bremen, Beijing, Tuscaloosa, East London). And they are using local assembly/supply base for that, partially inexperienced with serving premium manufacturers. Very apparent that the supplier hasn't been fully up to the challenge, nor MBUSI quality control. But hope the initial problems are overcome by now...

MLs have had MBtex since 2005 without issue. GLs and R classes as well. I personally haven't seen this issue.

Believe the SUVs have a different supplier. Here's one manufactured on July 31, 1998, and featuring aniline dipped slate grey leather seating surfaces together with MB-Tex trim. It's holding up so well, that the owner has so far refused to trade up to a newer ML. :)

Suspect two problems with this vid. :)

  • The main issue, said Larsson, is that it appears that the people who bought this Volvo did not pay for the “Pedestrian detection functionality,” which is a feature that costs more money.
  • But even if it did have the feature, Larsson says the driver would have interfered with it by the way they were driving and “accelerating heavily towards the people in the video.” “The pedestrian detection would likely have been inactivated due to the driver inactivating it by intentionally and actively accelerating,” said Larsson. “Hence, the auto braking function is overrided by the driver and deactivated.”

Totally agree with Wolfgang. These tests (just as the one recently conducted with the W205 in Auto Motor & Sport) are often maneuvering in the grey zone between autonomous functions and driver intervention - very difficult to figure out how much "manipulation" happens by the driver.

In the AMS test, the dummy was repeatedly hit (albeit at significantly reduced residual speed) by the C-Class vehicle. AMS however admitted "it took us several attempts to practice".

Mercedes-Benz is putting great emphasis on avoiding false alarms (and thereby preventing every day annoyances). That's why the car's computers deactivate full autonomous intervention, if even minor inputs are on steering or pedals are being detected (and thus the driver is assumed in control). And in fact, AMS has found that false alarms with MB's system are rare.

But that's part of the problem. Humans, by definition, are part of the HMI interface. They're also not perfect. If a human is able to interfere with the system and make it malfunction, then the technology is not fit for purpose. This is the big issue I have with taking some control away from the human. It's the same argument critics of Airbus aircraft put forward.

I wonder how these driving assistance systems would react in a situation like this

Benz Alarm - How to test your alarm if you do not have a panic button on the key ?

Hello,

Do you know how to check that your Benz C-class w205 alarm is working well if you do not have a panic button on the electronic key ?

Thank you.

Keep the driver side windows open.
Close the doors. Set the alarm.
While standing outside, open the door from the inside. Alarm will go off.

Thank you, I feel stupid that I didn't try this but actually I was thinking about something more official, an official way to test your alarm, nothing else exists ?

Thanks again.

Only USA cars get a panic button.

Modern cars come automatically with an alarm these days. I can't think of any car that doesn't have it.

Hi Wolf,
Any news about the diesel version of the W205 will be offered this Fall in the U.S ? I mean the 2016MY. Thanks.

Wolf, You're the man. Thanks for the info. I wonder why MB does not introduce the C300d (RWD) this Fall. Let's see how things go.

They are going for maximum sales and while AWD will not turn off a buyer completely in Florida, lack of AWD will surely make all the buyers in the Midwest and northeast walk away so they're going to likely stick with AWD for the diesel IMO. They're probably won't be a RWD C300d.

That makes sense. By the way, Merc1, do you hear the next Audi A4 will have 47mpg engine? I guess that's just premium gasoline. If so, that's so impressive. Look at the electric turbo which will need the new 48V battery ,man, the German will rule the automotive world. I can't wait to see them over here.

J.D. Power just reviewed the W205 C-Class and rated it far below what is expected.

That was to be expected because the C is full of bugs and glitches. Brand new car in a new factory so clearly there will be problems for a while.

They should have done a better job ramping up the U.S. factory.

I wonder how the South African and German factories are performing.
