720S [Official] McLaren 720S

The McLaren 720S is a sports car designed and manufactured by McLaren Automotive. It is the second all-new car in the McLaren Super Series, replacing the 650S beginning in May 2017. The 720S is built on a modified carbon monocoque, which is lighter and stiffer than the previous model, the 650S.

Agreed. 720S both coupe and Spider are untouchable once they hook up. 720S with stickier tires is capable of 2.6 seconds to 100 kph and 7.0 seconds to 200 kph totally stock on a good street surface. That’s absurd. The stock Pirellis need changed though to get the most from the car.

Holy depreciation... the 720 is still the best all-round supercar you can buy, but some it hasn’t been immune to some of the build quality and software issues modern McLaren’s are notorious for.

£149k for a loaded launch edition and still under warranty.

Lovely, lovely car, and gets better looking by age, but my word that's some depreciation (would still like to look at other 720S cars on sale to pass judgment though)

It's a car to buy used, but for the price my God what a deal. Depreciation also is worse in UK than US on the car.

Have they resolved their issues after the first year of production or are they cropping up just as often after the first year?

The depreciation curve for McLarens is the same worldwide unfortunately. Only the special McLarens are immune.

Are you still considering getting one or has its problems put you off?

Waiting for the values to get down more before making the jump. These are starting to (will) become the best super car bargain ever out the box.

Yes and no - issues with the suspension and infotainment system are still occasionally perennial, but not nearly as bad as during the time of the MP4-12C (still a dumb name for a road car). It's been around 10 years and many independent mechanics are still scared to touch a McLaren for major service. The Proactive Chassis Control one could say is MB's ABC on steroids.

The infotainment systems they use is still garbage and they should probably reconsider landscape orientation like basically every other car.

Build quality is suspect, as seen commonly on McLaren forums. Many McLarens I've sat in either have a mis-fitted panel or a creak/rattle. It's weird to be because we see photos and videos of the production facility that looks like a laboratory.

I thought this was something for which people used to give Ferrari a lot of stick …
Either they improved their game or McLaren are even worse in terms of build quality? Hmmmm

The build quality of the current lineup of Ferrari's is actually very good and the best it's ever been by Ferrari standards. Particularly the 488 (now F8) and GTC4 are leading examples.

Mclarens suffer poor fit and finish as well as electrical problems. Worst of all is that a dealer might only be able to fix your car in 2-3 months because they have huge backlog of other cars to fix.

Lastly, Mclaren are notorious for releasing too many new models and too quickly. Some independent dealers even refuse to accept Mclarens as trade ins.

Consumer confidence has been dented that sales have seen a big negative impact. Mclarens have had to resort to unbelievably cheap finance deals to drive sales.

You can walk into one of their dealerships and get a finance deal for a 600LT for peanuts in proportion to the cars performance.

My thoughts on Mclaren right now.

1. the make hands down the quickest cars that are relatively mass produced.
2. Their reliability and fit and finish are below average but also hit or miss. There are plenty of examples of cars that are great and never have issues we just don’t hear from those owners.
3. they’re experiencing growing pains as a company in a era where owners are extremely vocal about their issues. Ferrari QC issues were largely prior to heavy social media. 458’s were catching on fire often in 2010 and Porsche’s were just before that.
4. Even if it’s a great car, the 600 LT shouldn’t have been made. Not every single car in the line up needs an “LT” version. It’s also depressing values of the 675LT.
5. The 765LT will likely be the quickest, most high performing car we see for a while. I just hope they don’t screw up by putting a Senna type wing on the car.
6. Their current Hypercar line up is trash. The senna is hideous and could deliver 98% of the performance without being so boldly ugly. The Elva is beautiful but unusable and stupid with no windscreen. The Speedtail is neat I guess but as the only 3 seat car they really missed the mark with the F1 connection.

Regarding the last sentence, that's why Gordon Murray is stepping in with his project. He realizes that McLaren can't and won't be able to do a 3 seater like an F1 anymore.

Instead McLaren just keep recycling core parts and putting them together differently with a different body.

They should do in the future 720S model, small 570 type model and GT model. And hypercar like Ferrari and Porsche. And different type of design as much as possible between the models. Not like now.

Spot on. That's why their limited edition cars don't really seem special compared to other brand equivalents.... well, actually I feel the same about Lamborghini and their 1001 variations of the Aventador.

The Evra to me is a 720s without a windshield for over a million. I have my doubts it'll truly be sold out.
