I wasn’t planning on posting this video from Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman comparing the Lexus LFA and Acura NSX, but feel compelled after emails from multiple readers — here’s the eighteen minute video that I don’t recommend watching:
Long story short: Lieberman loves the NSX and hates the LFA, and makes no effort to hide it.
This in itself wouldn’t be so bad, but there’s a calculated desperation to Lieberman’s complaints about the LFA, with constant references to the Lexus supercar being “flawed” with little explanation, comparing the LFA’s transmission to the worst modern car he’s ever driven (the Smart TwoFour, seriously?), and calling the driving experience “squirrelly”, “hard to live with” and “annoying”.
All the editorial hyperbole ends up being very tiring and makes for awkward viewing, especially at the end of the video, as we watch Lieberman cruising up and down the 2nd Street Tunnel in the LFA, a big smile on his face.
(The only other time I’ve seen such a skewed review of the LFA is from…wait for it…Motor Trend last year
I like Honda NSX and S2000, but shamefully today they do not offer any worthy car, and even worse they decided not to produce the HSV, the LFA's rival. If they had it, they could say whatever they wished, but they have nothing and it is not a more than 10 year old car that will change anything.
It's sad because I liked his articles from his Autoblog days, but he might be trying too hard at making himself out to be a cult automotive journalist in the mold of Chris Harris or Clarkson. The fact that he compares this car to a Smart rather than, say, a Gallardo or the (discontinued) F430...essentially cars in the LFA's level, leads me to that conclusion. Hey, anything to rack up the number of views on Youtube, right?
But, it should also be noted that I'm biased but on this forum it's darn near a well-established fact.
PS: The NSX is still just the bee's knees. A true modern classic if there ever was one as it turned some of the rules on its face for the established players. To have the NSX and the M-B 190E 2.6 EVO, a garage like that would be an homage to Senna himself.
LFA sounds even more amazing than the Porsche Carrera GT. Much more higher revving and F1-esque.
