X5 M / X6 M [Official] BMW X5 M Thread

The X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. In April 2009, the X6 M version was announced, with a 408 kW (547 hp) version of the BMW S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first vehicles from BMW M GmbH to have xDrive all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmissions, and are also crossovers as opposed to passenger cars.
I just can't see how this is a bad looking car? Just because it isn't as blingy and showy as the ML 63 AMG makes it a bad looking car? I for one detest the look of the Mercedes with its abundance of chrome and overll odd proportions. Doesn't mean it's a bad looking but also don't think adding massive rims and chrome makes a good ooking car. THe X5-M looks sporty and elegant, the perfect combination for my likings...

ML63 was a very good looking vehicle before the face lift, after the face lift it suffers from down's syndrome.

The firsts for BMW M concerning these two vehicles aren't very flattering:

* The first M-vehicles that are only available with automatic transmission
* The first M-vehicles that weigh over 2005 kg (~2300 kg)
* The first M-vehicles that aren't NA (naturally aspirated)
* The first M-vehicles that are AWD

^^^ Yeah, and that is all pretty damn logical if you realise this new M car is a SUV :all_cohol
The next M5 probably won't have an auto tranny. It won't be as heavy. It won't have AWD...it will only have the same turbo V8, and that's fine with me :)

The X5 looks really good, I think it has to do with the return of the magnificent Estoril Blue. Would like to see that colour on an X6.

Can't we just evaluate the vehicle as hardcore SUV and forget all that M BS ? when I am buying this I won't buy it just because of the M heritage, ok that might give me expectations but the true factor is the driving experience and nothing else !

How come the car has US plates and not German ones?? This is the first time I've seen a car not featuring home town plates in press photos.:confused:

Colour could be a bit darker but overall it's an attractive package but as an M-car it does feel hollow.

The photoshoot was done in the US. Remember seeing the spyshots of the X5-M in the US?

Arrrf. This one is far from the X6 M. The front looks much better on the X6, it doesn´t fit properly into the X5. The rims are clearly worse than the X6 ones, and the rear bumper is too squared. Also they could have improoved the interior more than what they´ve done, sportier seats, a different steering wheel (this one is just the one on the current car without the chrome and with the M logo).

X6 M is waaaay over this.

The lighting in this photo is terrible and who ever was in charge must be an amateur. Appalling background too. Scott needs to give him man a slap as this is one hell of an half effort presentation. The photos lack an form of character or M-spirit.

I think Wimmer should give him a slap as well and take his job....

It's an SUV? No sh*t, Sherlock?

But tell me does an SUV necessarily need to have an automatic transmission and use a FI engine?

You know I'm not exactly thrilled that M decided to give up on its traditions and make a model that pretty much goes against all the things that their "philosophy" used to include.

That's what I'm afraid of, the character of the M5 will completely change if they use a turbo-V8 instead of the high-revving V10. I'd much rather see them increasing the V10's displacement by 0,5 liters (naturally also including other technical updates on the engine), raising the output figure to similar 550 hp range.

It's

But hey, who cares about that Mikael? As long as people are gullible to be spoon fed (lot of this) everything they are told to buy, BMW won't be suffering for betraying their legacy. Sames goes for all of these other hypocrite companies. Now personally, I don't care if either this new X6M or X5M are any good or not. In fact, I'm sure they are fantastic vehicles, but that doesn't change the fact they are overweight, over-powered, expensive trend-followers. Am so disappointed in what has happened to the automotive world. Call me a grandpa, call me a "living in the past" - I don't care, one bit. I'm am (or was, I should say) automotive enthusiast. This is not enthusiast stuff... this is trend.

Definitely agree.

What's also kind of funny is considering that BMW told EVO magazine a few years back that they would never use forced induction in M cars as it went against their philosophy. Oops.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
