M3/M4 [Official] BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M
Rather see a new M4 CSL. But GTS is fine too.

In essence, what was the difference between the philosophy of the GTS and that of the CSL? They both had weight reductions and added power. Maybe the CSL had a greater degree of weight savings, hence the 'L', but looking at how much BMW has already reduced the F8Xs weight, I'm not sure what else they can do to make it CSL worthy.

Only difference is one was a limited edition, incredibly overpriced yet ultimate BMW M3.
The other was Perfection itself and was build in big enough numbers to satisfy BMW "purists".

Lots of really good information. Not sure if it should go into another thread. Moderators, please advise. From bimmerfest

Thanks.

Few months ago, there was a heated debate from a certain member on M3/4's dome being not functional. I guessed that it probably is there to provide enough clearance for the intercooler, well here is the confirmation from the tech info docs on page 22:

The typical M "power dome" is functional. It provides the space for the indirect charge air cooling for the S55B30T0 engine.

Nice video...Personally waiting for the CSL one day:

As a driving utensil, IMO the Carrera will always remain the benchmark in its price range for driver involvement/enjoyment.

Thanks this is very interesting reading material, I like the way it describes all the modifications and new design techniques and how they have saved weight in so many components

Some interesting bits and bobs from the engine technical details document:

1) "The S55 engine is the successor to the S65 engine. Similar to the engines in the X5M, X6M, F1x M5/M6 and F06 M6 with S63 engine, the S55 is based on a production engine of BMW AG. As the engine identification highlights, the S55 engine is based on the N55 engine."

2) "The S55 engine is based on the N55 engine, 75% of the engine components were adopted from the N55 production engine and the other 25% of the engine components are new developments."

3) The S55 cooling system consists of:

TWO expansion tanks
1. engine coolant system
2. charge air coolant system

FOUR water pumps
1. mechanical pump for engine coolant
2. electric pump for auxiliary turbo cooling
3. electric pump for charge air cooling
4. electric pump for interior heat

EIGHT radiators/heat exchangers

1. charge air
2. upstream charge air
3. indirect charge air
4. engine coolant
5. upstream engine coolant
6. heater core
7. engine oil
8. M DCT transmission oil

Oh yes, I'm well aware how good the N55 engine is. Dare I say it, I'm having almost as much fun in the M135i as I am in the R8.

Had 5 hours and 140 miles of fun in my M135i too this morning hooning around Southern England. (Fine selection of cars on the road today heading to Goodwood too!)

Damn fine car it is indeed and a cracking engine. :)

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
