i8 [Official] BMW i8 World Premiere

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. The i8 was part of BMW's electrified fleet and was marketed under the BMW i sub-brand. The production version of the BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was released in Germany in June 2014. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in August 2014. A roadster variant was launched in May 2018. Production ended in June 2020.
I saw one for the first time last week. The owner was coming out of it, so the doors were up. I was going to ask the owner about but he looked busy rushing back to work with lunch and coffee in hand. It does look captivating.

BMW i8 Laser Lights available as an option for the first time in the US

Currently in showrooms and priced at $141,695 including $995 Destination & Handling, the MY2016 BMW i8 features Laser Lights available as an option for the first time in the US. The laser light option was available in Europe since the i8 went on sale in 2014, but in the U.S., FDA has been holding the feature hostage – until now. FDA is the governing agency responsible to approve medical devices, a category where the lasers fall under in the US.

Laser Light technology available in Europe for the new BMW i8 where it costs 9,500 euros. Earlier this year, BMW said the laser lights could be retrofitted after delivery if need be and a kit will be offered for U.S. customers, at an extra cost.

Compared to the standard LED lights, the optional laser lights ensures a high beam range of up to 600 meters. This means that the already high illumination range of the modern LED high beam is doubled. Thanks to the new laser technology, it is possible to increase energy efficiency by a further 30 percent compared to already highly power-saving LED light. The U.S. market will get a slightly modified version of the laser tech, twice stronger than regular headlights compared to three times as they are in Europe.

Furthermore, the laser lights in the U.S. for the i8 will not have the blue lights and they will automatically turn off for incoming cars.

Pricing for the laser lights feature will be announced shortly.

BMW i8 Spyder reportedly coming soon

BMW unveiled the i8 Spyder concept over three years ago but BMW Chairman Harald Krüger has reportedly confirmed it is finally headed for production.

Krüger was tight-lipped on specifics told Handelsblatt the model will be introduced relatively soon. There's no word on timing but BMW delivered the first i8s in mid-2014 so hopefully the company doesn't intend of making us wait too much longer.

It remains unclear how much the production model will have in common with the concept but the latter had a semi-transparent hood, an open top design and a rakish windscreen with an integrated spoiler. The model also had stylish rear buttresses and a shortened wheelbase.

The i8's plug-in hybrid powertrain will likely carryover and consist of a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. This setup enables the coupe to produce a combined maximum output of 362 PS (266 kW). In terms of performance, the model can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Of course, the real standout feature the ability to return 2.1 L/100 km (134.5 mpg UK / 112 mpg US) and travel up to 37 km (23 miles) on electricity alone.

The BMW i8 Spyder Concept Car will debut at the CES show in January.
Prelude to the production car and its forthcoming mid-life cycle impulse. Which will introduce more features for connectivity, safety and convenience.
Its not the only i8 you will see in 2016.

The i8 is looking great in the metal(?) and I think the Spyder till add to that.
Yes the i8 is great in a modern and futuristic way but so are the classics that can stand out in today's world. The i8 will be a future classic that is an absolute certain.
Speaking of classics? How is your "twins"?

It will be one of those "this is when it happened cars". These cars are always going to be in demand a few years later.

The twins are in hibernation. The black one is getting it's engine sorted and the orange one is getting an Alpina bodykit, along with some bucket seats and go-fast suspension. Stay tuned ;-)

I saw this beauty friday near my work.

The story of the car is the following:

The original colour was black, after a few months the owner decided to painted in red and after another months (max.3) decided to painted in yellow. Actually, when i took this pictures the paint was fresh. Also the interior colour was change, beige and blue.

P.S - The driver is a hot girl, what a pitty that i was no able to take her a picture too. :)

Facelifted BMW i8 with more horsepower and longer range

BMW will update both the i3 and i8 models within the next 12 months. The high-end super hybrid will reach showrooms next year while the i3 is due later this year. The facelifted i8 will get an upgraded petrol-electric powertrain currently being tested in a fleet of prototypes as well as the latest iteration of the i8-based safety car seen at Formula E events around the globe.

Details are still kept under wraps, but sources say the new i8 is likely to get a more powerful electric motor than the 129 hp unit used by the existing i8. In combination with the 1.5 liter three-cylinder petrol unit, the i8 will get a 10 percent boost in power to around 420 hp.

From 0 to 62 mph, the current i8 runs in 4.4 seconds, but with the updated powertrain the facelited i8 is likely to be faster.

At the same time, BMW is working to extend the overall range of the i8 through the adoption of a revised battery pack. The new i3 will get a 50 percent boost in range, so we expect a reasonable increase for the i8 as well. BMW has confirmed that the Formula E safety car eschews the 7.1kWh unit of the production car for a larger, 10.0kWh battery, possibly hinting at what’s to come for the facelifted version.

Just like the Formula E safety car, the facelifted i8 is also in line to receive a number of chassis modifications. The two i8 safety cars at Formula E events have modified upper wishbones and mounting points, together with revised spring and dampers, a 15mm lower ride height than the production car and 20in alloy wheels shod with 245/35 front and 285/30 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
It also remains to be seen if the facelifted i8 will get the wireless charging technology developed by Qualcomm.

Further possible updates being pursued by BMW for the facelifted i8 are carbon fiber wheels.

The launch of the facelifted i8 coupe is likely to coincide with the introduction of the BMW i8 roadster.

BMW i8 gets individual exterior paint options in the UK

BMW has announced a new customization program for the i8, and it’s called the Individual Exterior Paint Program.
Customers of the BMW i8 will be able to order from a wide range of color options developed by the brand’s Individual division. Furthermore, Black W-Spoke alloy wheels are available as part of the optional package.

BMW i8 clients will be able to choose from a range of non-metallic, Xirallic, or metallic paints, as well as matte or “frozen” finishes.

For those of you who have never heard of “Xirallic” paint, it is a mixture of synthetic mica or aluminum flakes that produces “scintillating effects,” thus the name Xirallic.

Among the new additions to the color range of the i8 are shades like Speed Yellow, Solar Orange, Java Green, Frozen Grey, San Marino Blue, Twilight Purple Pearl, Grigio Telesto Pearl, and Frozen Black.Depending on the choice, customers will get a variety of finishes to show off their customized i8.

The new option is available to clients in the United Kingdom. The last mention comes as BMW’s UK branch announced this project as an exclusive for the market. We do not know why BMW has chosen to launch this program just in the United Kingdom, but their press release is clear that the options are “bespoke to the UK.”
BMW decided to provide this program after the introduction of the i8 Protonic Red edition. The latter received an overwhelming number of orders, so the German company considered it was time to increase the color options for the i8.

BMW sold over 1,400 i8 units in the United Kingdom since the launch of the plug-in hybrid supercar. The company has yet to announce a production cap on its first gullwing-door model, but we think they will keep the i8 in production for a few more years. If you are interested in one and afford an i8, we advise you to go ahead and get one.
