i8 [Official] BMW i8 World Premiere

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. The i8 was part of BMW's electrified fleet and was marketed under the BMW i sub-brand. The production version of the BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was released in Germany in June 2014. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in August 2014. A roadster variant was launched in May 2018. Production ended in June 2020.
How come is Piech only austrian ?

Because his mother Louisa (Ferdinand Porsche's daughter) married an Austrian lawyer from Vienna: Anton Piech, Ferdinand Karl Piech's father. They lived in Austria, and FKP was born there (in Vienna), therefore being an Austrian citizen. The Piech family settled in Salzburg after WWII where they (Louisa and his brother Ferry were founders, while Anton Piech was a CEO) founded a company "Porsche Konstruktionen GmbH" which finally evolved into a company known today as Porsche Holding GmbH Salzburg - the largest VAG & Porsche distributer in Europe (today a part of VAG).

So, that's why FKP is an Austrian citizen with official domicile in Salzburg, Austria. While the other members of Porsche family by Ferry's side (and both Porsche companies - the car maker and the PHSE) are based in Stuttgart, Germany - where the legendary Ferdinand Porsche, FKP's grandfather, lived (after he got a prominent job @ Daimler in 1923).

But as we know VAG is based in Wolfsburg, Germany and PHSE in Stuttgart, Germany - so I guess Piech is more or less there, performing his Chairman of VAG function. But still - his official domicile & permanent residence is in Salzburg, Austria.

As an aftermath the Piech family is listed as one of the wealthiest Austrian families, while Porsche family is listed as one of the wealthiest German families.

Is this you? I read an article in Bemaristi (a Finnish Bimmer club mag) written by the owner of one of the i8:s. Was surprised to read he's had it since September IIRC, why haven't I seen one live yet? :( Do you know what colour the other one is and where it's located? This one was blue and in Tampere.

Appropriate.

@bilen: Why a dislike rating? When I see your profile page I think it was only a mistake because it would be your first given dislike. It's my hope. :)

“James Bond” buys a BMW i8

Former 007 Agent, Pierce Brosnan, takes the delivery of his new BMW i8. The former James Bond actor can be seen in the photos below as the California-based Alexander BMW delivers Brosnan’s car at this beach-front house. Pierce’s choice of car emulates the expensive tastes of James Bond while reminding us that he was the first and last Bond to drive a remote controlled BMW 7 Series in Tomorrow Never Dies. The Irish actor played James Bond four times between 1995 and 2002.

The Bonds are known lately for their taste for Aston Martin cars, but the i8 is just as competent and…cool.

BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system.

The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

In the U.S., the base price for the 2015 BMW i8 is $136,500 without the $950 Destination & Handling fee. The hybrid sportscar is offered with four packages, called “World” by BMW: Giga ($2,000), Tera ($3,000), Purse Impulse ($10,800) and Mega (standard). Four exterior colors are offered, Protonic Blue, Sophisto Grey, Ionic Silver and Crystal White.

This year, the U.S. market will get over 1,000 i8 cars, an increase of 50 percent over previous year. Last year, BMW sold 555 i8 cars to U.S. customers.

Ha ha ha - he didn't even make it out of the country club! The instructors' brief was to drive through the cones not the sodding fence numb nut.
And, to prove that there's no such thing as bad publicity - here's confirmation that the i8's Lifecell is nice and strong even when tossed off an embankment.

Ok, I saw my first i8 on the road half an hour ago and I was flabbergasted. This thing looks amazing! I don't know what I've said about it in the past, but I take everything back. It looks strikingly freaking awesome and alien-like, but in a good way.

Wow!

I know what you mean, the first time I saw one it took me a few seconds to realize what I was looking at. They are really impressive.

I was like "no, it can't be an i8"

And it was. It caught my eye two blocks away and I was lucky to catch it a few traffic lights later.

I don't know what it is to drive, or how it feels to sit in it, but it got my attention from quite far away. So far, only vintage Alfa Romeos and the E39 do that.

:D
