i8 [Official] BMW i8 World Premiere

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. The i8 was part of BMW's electrified fleet and was marketed under the BMW i sub-brand. The production version of the BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was released in Germany in June 2014. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in August 2014. A roadster variant was launched in May 2018. Production ended in June 2020.
I think these driving modes are a crock of nonsense too...

I never use ECO PRO because I understand it for exactly what it is: a diminished supply of fuel relative to throttle position sensor. As an informed and trained driver I know that throttle position relative to engine load is everything to fuel consumption. I get next to no tangible benefits from using a throttle mapping mode and huge benefits from adjusting my driving style regardless of mode in use.

Real world driving is a relative and vague concept which is open to interpretation on a number of objective and subjective levels and, in addition, can drastically influenced by a number of variables. So, let's rather steer clear of that discussion. ;)

The fact here (and not isolated to BMW nor the i8) is that the manufacturer claims that 135 MPG is possible - that's 1.76 l/100km! Now with a car that has a max theoretical power output of 266 kW we all know that to achieve the said fuel consumption figure over a given spread of journeys is unrealistic.

I've always been against these modes, my opinion the differences are small. I keep telling my mother to change from Eco to sport but she insist Eco mode is the best option. Blaha blaha I tell her!

Interesting. The G11 7er will have this option too, lets see what it looks like.

Firstly, where did you read the 7 Series will have a leather engine cover? I THINK I know where you read it but that was a post which mentioned options coming to the 7 Series AND the i8.

Secondly, how would a leather engine cover work on a 7 Series?! Unless this is some kind of bizarre road BMW are going up with personalisation, I assume the leather engine cover is something in the INTERIOR of the i8 behind the passengers and above the engine which exchanges a cloth material for a more premium leather material. I certainly don't think you're going to be able to spec a leather covering to your 7 Series engine. That would be mad.

With regards to ECO PRO, I use it on highways with the cruise control activated. Not because the throttle mapping gives me any benefit, but because it also puts the air con in a more efficient mode. However, there are downsides to this. In winter it means the windows fog up more, and in the summer, the interior doesn't seem as cool.

There is also an extra problem on newer BMWs with a "coasting" function which is activated on selecting ECO PRO. I had this on the 640i I had for a week a month ago (I still need to make a post about my time with it). On busy but free-flowing motorways in the UK, which is pretty much the case from 6am to midnight, it's very hard to maintain your desired distance from the car in front. I like to use the cruise control as much as possible and have become quite adept at deselecting the cruise button on the steering wheel whenever I see the traffic in front slowing down. If done correctly you can travel a long distance deactivating and activating the cruise function without ever touching the brakes. However, with the "coast" function, when you deactivate the cruise the speed barely reduces which leaves you scrambling for the brakes at the last second when your forward momentum hasn't been scrubbed off as much as you'd expected. It makes for very erratic progress and is rather annoying. Luckily you can deselect the coasting function, although when activated the fuel savings are tangible.

For what it's worth, on a long journey using ECO PRO the whole time, I am told by the car that on a full tank in a 3,5 or 7 Series diesel, the bonus km is around 200km.

On my M135i it tends to be in single figures, so I don't use it.

The long distance driving I do often involves significant changes in altitude. Just this Sunday I was driving up out of the "lowveld" in 30 degrees C. The altitude gain is as much as 900m. ECO PRO mode is useless to me in this scenario. On the plateau - granted - there are some savings to be made but nowhere near the extra 200 km you see. I suspect I could only get such a gain on a flat, long cruise in ECO PRO mode at a steady 120 km/h. Even then - I'm rather sceptical.

There are several reports which are only referred to the next 7.

2016 BMW G11 7 Series Will Get Leather Engine Cover, Things Are Getting Out of Hand

In the last article of autoevolution.com is the following paragraph interesting:

"That’s not all though. According to our sources in Munich, the new 7 Series will get an optional feature known as ‘3CM’. Searching for it in the BMW system you’ll see that it stands for ‘Leather Engine Cover’. That’s right, if you want to, your car’s engine cover can feature leather instead of plastic."

But I see what you mean, Betty. Maybe you will get the cover in combination with a glass hood. :)

Yeah, that place you mean, not sure where I read it. Didn't realize some of those options might be i8 only.
But looking at Rainer's post above, it really looks like they meant the 7er as well.

I have also an article in my mind with new options for the 7 and i8. I have to admit that I have all options referred to both ranges like you, klier. :)

The problem with modern journalism is that the vast majority of these sites just base their articles on second, third or even fourth hand evidence, and they don't actually get FIRST hand evidence. They just copy what each site has written and the story goes round in circles and gains momentum and snowballs out of control. Before you know it people are quoting these sites as "fact" and "news". It's utter rubbish most of it.

There was ONE post by a BMW insider on another forum on the 12th December last year that was misquoted, and it quickly spiralled out of control because they just copied incorrect information from each other.

The original post by ynguldyn on 12th December was:

"Here's the list of newly created options you will likely see in BMW cars 1-2 years from now. It's unknown, which specific cars will have them. Wheel styles, colors, lines, and trims have been omitted."

There is no way a leather engine cover is going to appear on a 7 Series. It's for the interior of the i8.

No it will not! It has always been an option for i8 only - the options have been copied from BMW dealers' system, and the source predicted all the options were linked to G11 / G12. But some of them are actually options on other cars - like this leather engine cover.

Guys, use you brain! How does a leather engine cover make sense on a conventional front engined sedan? It doesn't at all! While i8 has an engine in the back - and above the engine there's a cover / shelf - and this piece can be wrapped in leather. One doesn't have to be Einstein to figure that out!

With regards to the leather engine cover, I was getting deja vu.

I don't know whether it's my memory which is so good, or it's other people's that is so bad, but we've pretty much had this conversation before, word for word.

The leather engine cover may be related to an area on the i8 above the engine. You may be able to choose to deck out this area in leather.
