i8 [Official] BMW i8 World Premiere

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. The i8 was part of BMW's electrified fleet and was marketed under the BMW i sub-brand. The production version of the BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was released in Germany in June 2014. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in August 2014. A roadster variant was launched in May 2018. Production ended in June 2020.
BMW i8S in the works, could run from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds
Could cost $175,000
BMW is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary and a new report is indicating the company is working on a high-performance i8 codenamed M100.

Rumored to be called the i8S, the model will reportedly be based on the i8 but adopt a sportier exterior and a number of bespoke parts. Details are limited but Automobile Magazine is reporting it will be a two seater with a retuned suspension, beefier brakes and wider tires for improved grip.

Powertrain details are shrouded in secrecy but the company is reportedly considering a twin-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder with approximately 320 hp (238 kW) and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder with roughly 480 hp (358 kW). The engine will send power to the rear wheels, while an electric motor - that develops 109 hp (81 kW) or 204 bhp (152 kW) - will motivate the front wheels. Thanks to the extra oomph, the i8S will reportedly accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.5 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

If everything pans out, the i8S will be launched in the United States in late 2017. The model is rumored to cost 30 percent more than the standard i8, so expect pricing to start at roughly $175,000.

The BMW i8 has been named car of the year by Top Gear magazine.

According to magazine's editor-in-chief, Charlie Turner, "The BMW is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future." He added, "It’s the kind of car we should celebrate, a beautiful vision of the future, delivered now."

As a refresher, the i8 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. This enables the model to have a combined maximum output of 362 PS (266 kW) which allows it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). More importantly, the i8 averages 2.1 L/100 km (134.5 mpg UK / 112 mpg US) and can travel up to 37 km (23 miles) on electricity alone.

Saw my first one at the BMW service center the other day -

Definitely the most futuristic looking car I seen. The only disappointment was the skinny tires. My sister-in-law thought it was a sci-fi movie car.

BMW i8 sold for $247,450, including $100,000 market adjustment

VW Vortex via WorldCarFans said:
At Irvine BMW
Rather than patiently waiting for his order, a BMW i8 buyer was willing to pay an extra $100,000 to get the car right away.

This shouldn't really come as a big surprise as back in August last year we heard some rumors about a few dealers jacking up the price of an i8 by as much as $100,000. It actually happened at BMW Irvine in Orange County, California where a $147,450 i8 was sold for $247,450 after the massive $100,000 markup (or "market adjustment").

Needless to say, the BMW i8 is in high demand as the company's sales & marketing boss Ian Robertson said a while ago there's an 18-month waiting list in some markets. As a consequence, BMW is seriously considering to boost production to keep up with a demand which they admit has far exceeded their original estimations.

That frozen yellow i8 actually looks quite good, better than the darker colours we normally see
