i8 [Official] BMW i8 World Premiere


The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. The i8 was part of BMW's electrified fleet and was marketed under the BMW i sub-brand. The production version of the BMW i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and was released in Germany in June 2014. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in August 2014. A roadster variant was launched in May 2018. Production ended in June 2020.
Hey! I was only talking about bad gearboxes meaning they are automatic. Pretty irritating that people think about something else. 1M had a proper (=good) gearbox though. :usa7uh:

Could this not be a privately owned souped up i8. It doesn't exactly scream test car.

That isn't a test car.

If the plate was visible it could be checked to see if it is a BMW AG vehicle.
The thing is the refreshed i3 And i8 are not entirely visible to the naked eye.

The rear screen vents and the wheels match the Formula E i8 Safety car. I doubt a private owner would modify it as such.

Since when are these reasons for a car enthusiast to buy a sports car?

They're probably not, unless it's already a brand enthusiast (such as myself or perhaps Klier), for whom buying into that philosophy is part of the attraction of the car.

Other than that, you're right, I'll happily state that I think it's the best looking car out of the options discussed, but they didn't need to make it a 1.5l hybrid for it to look like that. Though for some, that might be enough.

The performance would be enough to keep me happy, and it's limited electric range would cover many of my journeys - I wouldn't expect that to affect my bank account by much, but it does offer some smug-satisfaction to be honest.

If I was looking for savings in my bank account, let's not forget also that the i8 is very tax efficient in the UK at least... (7% BIK), it could save people in the mid-high tax bracket around £40,000 in 3 years if it's put through as a company car (£52,000 for a current base R8 vs £12,000 for the i8).

I think it's a slim set of circumstances where the i8 will top someones buying list purely as a sports car, but as an emotional purchase I can understand why they would.
 
The revised i8 and the new 5er bring Inductive Charging. The i8 will also receive Remote Parking so you can summon it from the Charging pad Batman style!

Handy I'm sure, but this doesn't excite me quite as much as an uprated B48 engine being installed, along with denser battery (a la updated i3) and up-rated motors would. :(
 
And? BMW employees do own BMW's themselves you know. Especially with the discounts available to them.

If you want to believe this is one only i8 built by the BMW's employeess, it's perfect. But not. We've done our work checking somethings. If this car has brakes from AP Racing, is perfectly one form to disguise one potential model and they do precisely that you think, that is only one "special" i8 from one employee. All car producers introduce anything to mislead.

I don't understand your post, to be honest. When I said "BMW employees" own BMW themselves, I meant it could just be their own personal car. If you've traced the number plate then fair enough.

Next gen BMW i8 may go fully electric

According to Autocar, BMW may be turning the next generation i8 fully electric by ditching its 1.5L gas engine. In place of the current hybrid system, the all-electric i8 would be powered by a larger battery and three new high revving brushless electric motors - two powering the rear wheels while the third powers the front wheels.

The new electric motors are claimed to operate at a much higher internal speed than the units used by the current i8, and would produce up to 268 horsepowers each. For comparison the current i8 produces 357 horsepowers in total.

“BMW has a great history of high-revving combustion engines,” said Autocar's source. “We’re looking to take this tradition into the electric car arena with electric motors that rev far higher than those seen in production today.” As well as providing greater power, the high-revving nature of the prototype electric motors allows them to be made in a more compact form than those in use today. “Revs are the route to making electric motors smaller,” said BMW.

The carbon fiber structure would be modified with a wider center tunnel to house the larger battery. And despite the increased battery size, there would be no weight gain from the current i8.
