ALPINA released the first details about the upcoming D3 Bi-Turbo ahead of it's Frankfurt world premiere:

350PS is not enough when you consider that the 335d is already 313PS. The premium for Alpina's is high and a just over 10% power and torque hike does not justify the premium, imo.

The B3 is a better proposition with power boosted from 306PS to 410PS at a time when no M3 is available, also for those who want an AWD "M3 equivalent" the B3 delivers a unique proposition. The D3 should have had 50d power levels (381PS).

Interesting side note: The D3 Bi-Turbo is available as RWD (F30/F31) and AWD (F31 only) but ALPINA manufactured them on different donor cars: the F30/F31 330d and the F31 335d xDrive.

Glowing first drive report from Autocar:
Autocar said:
In short, the D3’s blend of effortless performance with smooth ride and handling is as addictive as it is impressive on the move. You flow across the ground in this car at huge speeds, feeling as if there is almost no energy whatsoever being summoned in the process. In Comfort the ride is deliciously soothing; in Sport Plus it gets firmer and the roll control very obviously becomes better, but even then the ride quality remains better than acceptable, even on the UK’s worst road surfaces.

The D3’s trump card, though, isn’t its smooth ride and handling, or its tidal wave of mid-range performance, or even its quietly breathtaking good looks. It is instead the fact that it manages to combine all of the above with 50mpg real-world economy – and a price tag that is the right side of £50,000. And that makes it one of the most desirable four door cars that sensible money has ever been able to buy, if not THE most desirable.

@Soup do you have any German car magazine test of this Alpina D3?

Yeah, I'm just going to say it: the D3T is probably the closest thing out there to my view of the perfect midsize allrounder.

Guess who is now at Auto Express? The one and only Steve Sutcliffe and nice to see him making some driving videos already and here he gives a good long term review on the Alpina D3 BiTurbo.

Alpina D3 Facelift spy photo / Automedia

BMW recently introduced the facelifted 3-Series so it comes as little surprise that Alpina is working on an updated version of their D3 Bi-Turbo.

Caught near the Nürburgring, the 2016 Alpina D3 follows in the footsteps of the standard model but adopts a front spoiler, a new rear skirt and a four-tailpipe exhaust system. The car also has a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance brakes and the company's iconic multi-spoke wheels.

Power will likely be provided by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 350 bhp (257 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It should enable the sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while the all-wheel drive wagon should accomplish the same task in 4.5 seconds.

Here's a very nice movie of the history of Alpina.

I have to agree! I'm a BIG diesel fan myself as I don't have any fetishism with petrol engines.

The only possible competition in the near future to the Alpina D3 BT may come from the Giulia RWD V6 diesel version with 275 hp and the Giulia AWD V6 diesel version with 340 hp. The diesel engine comes from Maserati:

"And we are package-protected for V6 diesel, we can install it in the car and after we can decide whether to put it in or not." The Giulia programme’s chief engineer Philippe Krief said.

I could be wrong, but thing I read somewhere that the Maserati diesel engine is produced by VM

“The new engines ... have been co-developed between the Ferrari and Maserati teams,” said Maserati CEO Harald Wester. “Both have been produced in Maranello.”

“Despite the principal differences in combustion between diesel and petrol many of the technologies ... are very similar,” he said.

I think you were referring to the 'old' diesel engine:

"272bhp? Sounds a bit limp for a Maserati.

You’re right, particularly when German rivals offer over 300bhp. The fact is this VM Motori-built V6 is merely a stopgap until a brand new twin turbo diesel arrives in a couple of years. That will come in two forms, one with around 275bhp, and a hotter version with 350bhp."

All Maserati diesel engines are by VM Motor at the moment.

Not that it is a bad thing at all, VM specialised in building diesel engine blocks, albeit developed somewhere else, for some time now, however:

" this VM Motori-developed unit is only going to be around as long as it takes Maserati to develop a more potent twin-turbo unit (that’ll probably rock up in 2016)."

What I seriously don't understand is that Alpina is a brand made by people/engineers with a PASSION and therefore (like you and me) deserves a Winner "state" and on a forum like this with "carpassion" only get"s 1 like from you.

In other words... I totally agree with you, Alpina is a WINNER.
