3 Series Official: BMW 328 Hommage Concept

The BMW 3 series is a line of compact executive cars manufactured by BMW since May 1975. It is the successor to the 02 series. Since 2013, coupé and convertible models have been marketed as the 4 Series. The M version of the 3 series, the M3, debuted with the E30 M3 in 1986.
BMW has revealed the 328 Hommage concept just before its show debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este near Lake Como, Italy this weekend.
Based on the Vision Connected Drive Concept revealed in Geneva, the 328 Hommage is a modern interpretation of the classic sportscar from the 1930s. Bathed in that distinctive diagonal carbon fiber weave seen throughout the vehicle, the 328 Hommage focuses on lightweight construction through carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The result is a gross vehicle weight of only 780 kilograms (1720 lbs).
The 328 Hommage follows in the footsteps of the M1 Hommage concept from 2008. Unfortunately, unlike the M1, the 328 Hommage is a hand-me-down concept that fails to impress with its faux leather fender straps and 3D kidney grille. These elements seem like forced attempts to make a stylistic connection with the original 328.
Yes, of course it's a retro concept that's honoring a classic, but something a bit more bespoke like the Mille Miglia concept would be have been more appropriate, especially for such an iconic vehicle that represents so much of what BMW stands for today: "dynamics, aesthetics and a high level of innovation."

BMW 328 Hommage concept revealed

Oh my god..im in love..this is all kinds of right:D

I do not know what to say. This concept is unique, of course, but I really do not understand the front especially where headlights are supposed to go. The rest of the car is nice, interesting, and grabs your attention. I have to say I am not the car's biggest fan, though. I simply do not see the appeal of such a concept other than to commemorate an past model, but even then, it may not be commemorating it in the proper way? :t-hands: I am not sure. Jury is still out on this one.

Edit: After looking at a few of the pictures, I like it. I didn't at first glance, but after looking at it and scrolling back up you can really appreciate, much like certain wines. Unlike one of the descriptions above, I actually like the leather on the hood and the side, though it wouldn't be practical for an actual car due to obvious rapid deterioration of water, dust, pollution, etc.

If only they'd change the front headlight X into something else, like an actual headlight.

My godness waouw, this so unclassicaly cool and funky, and that interior is so damn class :D

THAT is SWEET. Props to BMW for doing something like this. These guys have to stay proud and continuously show off their history, as that keeps them ahead of the competition.

I love that insanely classic BMW grill. I so wish Bimmers would go back to that look, rather than the mostly warmed over, bland fronts we see now. I'd love to see classic BMW grills back in a modern way (like here), like M-B do very well.

Totally agree, I' like this grill MORE LIKE THIS THAN THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT!!

So this is a Vision ConnectedDrive Concept with a different paint scheme and a retro front end?

Lame.

I don't think it's a 'paint scheme' difference, more like a difference in construction material.

Put aside the hommage aspect, I think the key to this concept is showing off that full carbon-fiber reinforced plastic body. Yeah we've seen this in exotic/supercars, but you could easily see this concept being transformed into the next Z4 or even Z2.

It's the lightweight aspect which is most staggering and noteworthy!

In the true sense of a hommage, this concept was more relevant to vehicles of that era:

Kind of.

BMW Design team made excellent design as a vessel for the ConnectedDrive tech: as showcased with BMW Vision ConnectedDrive. Although they tried to make the emphasis on tech, and not on car design, they failed. :D

The "vessel" design was talk of the town when presented. And completely overshadowed the tech inside the vehicle. The reaction to design was incredible! That made BMW chief to think ...

To remind you: exterior of Vision ConnectedDrive was penned by Julianne Blasi (E89 Z4 exterior designer), interior by Robert Hlinovsky, and light graphics by intern Seungmo Lim. Design team leader was Domagoj Djukec (ex Citroen designer).

So, since the design had got such a positive reception they decided to use it as a real design study as well: therefore the BMW 328 Hommage Concept - made from BMW Vision ConnectedDrive Concept vessel.

This time Hlinovsky himself penned the interior changes for 328 Hommage, while exterior changes were penned by Christopher Weil (the guy who also penned the exterior of F07 5er GT).

:t-cheers:

IMO both Hommage concepts (M1 & 328) are EPIC, or even beyond!

I'm hearing they are thinking of making 507 Hommage & 2002 Hommage as well in the near future!

780 kg. Lets hope there will be a lightweight production ready sportscar from BMW in the future.

AMAZING!!. This makes me wonder whether BMW should use the vertical kidneys again.

This idea has been on for quite a while ... especially on Chris Weil's mind. :D

I guess it's now up to BMW chiefs to greenlight this feature on some future designs ... :t-cheers:

Not 'kind of'. It is. And Connected Drive is much superior looking.

Ready the story again.

The first time it was just a vessel, and since the design was found to be good & well excepted, it was used for the Hommage design study. Is that such a sin?

Why making another Hommage design if the VCC vessel's design fits & works beyond well? :t-hands:

Hah ive seen Connected drive in real life..looked like crap..

This is waay better:)

Yes. They are working on a 2002 Hommage which will segue into the next 1er Coupe.

And since they have now chosen the proposal for the proposed next generation Z8 (I dont know what it looks like , but I have confidence and admiration for the designer who is proven in this segment.)

So expect a Hommage for that car sometime in the next two years.

After 2015. For BMW the floodgates will open in regards to the Premium segment. Meaning additional models to sustain the upper premium segment for BMW. Up until 2015 it is the Compact City , Premium Compact and Premium entry classes that rank the most important segments in the industry. And BMW is well advanced with that strategy.
