Alfa Romeo boss hints at a high-performance 4C
Current model has 240 PS (176 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque
Alfa Romeo CEO Harald Wester has revealed the company could offer a high-performance 4C.

Speaking to Car & Driver, Wester said the turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder engine is "only at 136 horsepower per liter, so there is space" for additional power. The executive went on to say the car's carbon fiber monocoque can handle some extra oomph but the company would add high-performance brakes to match the upgraded engine.

Wester declined to say how much the engine could produce but it currently develops 240 PS (176 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Why Americans are rediscovering Italian cars

MONTEREY, Calif. -- Fiat aside, Italian cars live in a rarefied world of the very rich and the very few.

Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Pagani, Zagato -- those luminary brands barely add up to a percent of a percentage point worth of sales in America.

But oh, the mystique.

Oh, the power of the Italian design -- the curves of the Italian body and the seductiveness of their bold ways, even among Americans who in many cases have never owned one or even driven one.

This weekend, some 8,000 people will pay $155 each to crawl over a golf course here to murmur sei bella and ti amoto 800 or more classic Alfas, Ferraris and Maseratis parked on display at the annual Concorso Italiano.

Tom McDowell, who has been president of Concorso since 2009, says advanced ticket sales indicate the crowds will be up by one-fourth over last year. That’s partly due to moving it from Friday to Saturday for the first time in 28 years -- but even that doesn’t explain the simple fact that more fans of automobili italianeare out there than there used to be.

Why?

“It’s something about the curves,” McDowell says. “There’s something about the way Italians create those lines. They don’t recognize the limitation of design. Every year, they push the envelope on what’s creative.

“And that’s Italian culture. It’s a country that’s not run by regimentation. It’s a passionate culture.”

It can’t hurt that Italy’s mass-market brand, Fiat, is now back in U.S. retailing and running ads on TV that remind Americans that cars also come in red-white-and-green.

Fiat may be educating young Americans that Italy exists. But McDowell doubts that Fiat advertising will necessarily spark curiosity in Maserati and Lambo dealerships here.

“More young people are indeed coming to the Consorso now,” he notes. “But I don’t think Fiat will bring young people into the Italian higher end of the luxury market.

“But I do think the Alfa 4C will do that,” McDowell predicts, referring to the newly launched turbocharged four-cylinder Alfa that reintroduces the brand here with a sticker price of about $70,000.

“That vehicle has an opportunity to bring younger luxury buyers into Italian-brand luxury market,” he says. “That’s the car that can do it.”

But the showman cautions that Alfa has a tough challenge ahead.

“They’ve been missing from the U.S. market for many years,” he says. “They have to reintroduce themselves to a generation of Americans who have never heard of them. Fiat has been creative in their marketing in doing that. I’m confident Alfa will be just as creative.”

Rumored to get 270 HP
A fully camouflaged prototype of the Alfa Romeo 4C Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) has been spied undergoing testing.

While the rear license plate might put a smile on your face, the prototype spotted here it's no joke as all signs point to a hotter version of the Alfa Romeo 4C which will likely receive the "Quadrifoglio Verde" or "Stradale" moniker.

Featuring a more aggressive body, the lightweight Italian two-seater will get air intakes in front of the rear wheels along with additional air intakes in the front bumper’s left & right corners. There’s also a new side skirt design, remodeled bumpers, different exhaust tips, extra cooling slots near the round taillights, fresh ten-spoke alloy wheels.

The beefier body will be matched with a slightly more powerful engine as the four-cylinder 1.75-liter turbocharged gasoline engine will likely be upgraded from the current 240 HP (176 kW) to approximately 270 HP (198 kW).

The Alfa Romeo 4C QV could be introduced at next year's Geneva Motor Show set for early March.

Company believes the rocket will rocket from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds

Lazzarini Design has been known to come up with some crazy ideas but their latest proposal takes the cake.

Dubbed the 4C Definitiva, the model is based on the Alfa Romeo 4C and features a Ferrari-sourced 4.3-liter V8 engine that has been equipped with twin-turbochargers from Hennessey. Thanks to these changes, the car packs an insane 738 bhp (550 kW) and 532 lb-ft (720 Nm) of torque.

Performance specifications haven't been finalized but the company believes the model will weigh 955 kg (2,100 lb), accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 9.5 seconds at 137 mph (220 km/h).

In order to keep things under control, the car has been equipped with an aerodynamic body kit that includes a new front bumper, a carbon fiber front splitter and a ventilated hood. The model also has extended fenders, revised side skirts and a new rear bumper with an integrated diffuser. Other notable highlights include a prominent rear wing and a center-mounted dual exhaust system.

The car is currently under development and the company estimates the first prototype will cost about €250,000 ($310,900 / £196,842) to complete.
