XC90 [Official] 2015 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002. The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken in Sweden. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic). In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90. However, in September 2024, Volvo launched the second facelift of XC90, and stated that both models would be sold together.
So what do you do when you want to put child or adult in the front passenger seat?

I see these all over the streets now and I absolutely love them. I'd have one over just about everything the competition can throw at it.

I have too seen a couple and contrary to my expectations, the third row seats are of the same size as those in the 2nd row. It's a stunning car that could very well be my next car in 2-2.5 years when I could be in the market for a larger car.

Last week I even ordered a brochure which I have browsed through and read a couple of times.

2015 Volvo XC90

A total of 57,000 orders so far
Volvo has announced that more than three quarters of XC90 customers have decided to order the flagship Inscription version.

It's a known fact the second generation XC90 is turning out to be a huge success for the revitalized Swedish marque and now Volvo says they have registered almost 57,000 orders, thus surpassing the company's forecast for this year of 50,000 cars. To keep up with the massive demand, Volvo is assembling the XC90 in three shifts at the factory in Torslanda at home in Sweden.

The good news doesn't end here as Volvo specifies 76% of the orders they have received so far for the XC90 are of the top-of-the-range Inscription model, so they should be making some significant profits with their "made by Sweden" SUV.

Speaking about these results, Alain Visser, Senior Vice President for Marketing Sales and Customer Service, mentions "it is fair to say that we have now entrenched our position as a premium car maker."

This is great news for Volvo!

It's a hollow victory for Volvo. The first generation XC90 was a slam dunk too as consumers are flocking to any SUV that's new. Volvo needs to work harder on other cars in the range as relying on an SUV to keep the company afloat is an unsustainable model. The S90 needs to appeal to consumers the same way a BMW 520d does or an Audi A4 2.0T.

I definitely agree. But after being in some financial quagmire and then being bought by Geely, one didn't know how the parent company was going to go about with Volvo. The XC90 is a vote of confidence and a step in the right direction. What remains to be seen is how consumers are going to react with Volvo's decision to forgo anything with more than 4-cylinders, especially as oil prices are down.

So far Geely have been surprisingly supportive of Volvo and letting the brand remain distinctively Volvo. They have hired a flag ship car designer and given him and others freedom to re-invite Volvo.

If the efforts that have been put into the XC90 trickles down to their next cars then Volvo could resurge like Jaguar. This could however, come at the cost of losing Scandinavian customers whom Volvo have preliminary been designing cars for over the past 20-40 years. My opinion is that there is more to gain from appealing to more global markets then continuing to appease Scandinavians.

I hope not like Jaguar because Jaguar isn't doing all that well at all.

And Scandinavians are not going to stop buying Volvos. Just like the Dutch are not going to stop buying their beloved brand.

What do you mean by Jaguar is not doing well?

Sales aren't that spectacular are they? And didn't the profits take a huge dive recently?
