A8/S8 [Official] 2013 Audi S8

Has anyone got one of those software programmes that can roughly calculate HP base on 1/4 mile acceleration times and speeds because I am seriously questioning Audi's output figures for the S8..... 520hp looks to be more like 550-560hp if you ask me.

And you will prove your point with a hp to 1.4 mile time function?

I can prove nothing other than an opinion that it is actually making more than they say.
Ι don't think that those applications/software have any value as an argument. There's only one way to determine the output of that engine. Bench dynamometer. Not even a thorough thermodynamic analysis can provide accurate results, due to the nature of the thermodynamic cycle of the internal combustion engine. If you have dyno tests of thew new S8, then that's a good argument, in my book.

:)

Goes like stink apparently, regardless of Audi power claims. Giannis, any comments on the efficacy (advantage) of quattro off the line and the tranny gearing playing a role here as well?

Theoreticaly, the less power a wheel transmits to the road the better it is, as in the wheel will not spin. So, if the S8 was FWD or RWD instead of AWD, it would start with a massive wheel spin. Then again, an AWD system has more losses over a system that transmits the power to only one axle, due to the less moving parts.

Also, keep in mind that when you accelerate off the line, the CoG is shifted a bit towards the rear of the car, so the rear wheels have more load on them, compared to the front ones. So, an RWD car would start better than an FWD one, with the same tyres/power/revs.

As far as the tranmission is concerned, I am afraid I don't have an opinion on this. I really have no idea!

Thanks Giannis. Seems extremely quick for its weight no doubt. Assumed close ratio gearing might be helping but I do not know either.

Surprisingly quick if you ask me. I suppose the best gauge for us to compare with would be the Bentley CGT which has a similar AWD and similar power though I can't recall what the weight differences are.

As you can't just see the gearbox alone, or the engine alone, it's all down to one thing. When you change the gear for the next one, the reduction in the engine's revolutions per minute need to be calculated, so that the revs won't drop to a point that the torque or horsepower is much lower than the max output. In simple words, you need to always stay in the optimum rev range. Then based on the power and torque output graphs you calculate you close the ratio has to be.

Why the Audi S8 dont use S-tronic-transmission? Then its much faster.

This probably is the best S8 picture ever. Wow.

Probably because of longevity/reliability, and also because a flagship luxury saloon like the S8 probably demands a smoother gearbox (even if it's only slightly more so) and the 8th gear for long distance cruising.

I had the pleasure to be trained on the S8 and the S-Tronic simply cannot handle the torque of the 4.0L TT in S8 trim. Same reason why the torque on the S6 & S7 is limited to 406 lb ft and why the RS6 uses the 8 speed ZF as well. Apparently the limit for the S-Tronic (as it is right now) is around 410 lb ft.

True, it's same thing about the new RS6.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
