GT-R Nissan GT-R (Official pics & info)

The Nissan GT-R (Gran Turismo–Racing; model code: R35) is a series of cars built by Nissan from 2007 to 2025. It has a 2+2 seating layout and is considered both a sports car and a grand tourer. The engine is front-mid mounted and drives all four wheels. It succeeds the Nissan Skyline GT-R, a high-performance variant of the Nissan Skyline. The car is built on the PM platform, derived from the FM platform used in the Skyline and Nissan Z models. Production is conducted in a shared production line at Nissan's Tochigi plant in Japan.
People with more money than brains. All you have to do is wait 6-8 months. Just order one at sticker and wait. No way in hell I'd pay double the price on any car just to have it now. Same people (suckers) did this for the Acura NSX, Corvette ZR-1 back in the 90's both cars couldn't be given away a few years later. Pure idiotic nonsense. The only way I'd do this is to flip the car for even more to an even bigger sucker. If I pay 120 and he'll buy it from me for 130 then why not? Only way to go. If you're going to pay this much over (or anything over sticker) and actually drive the car you're nuts.

Unless you've somehow had your name on the list months ahead of time, there's no way you are going to find one. These cars will be flying out of the lot... like the article said, the big dealerships will get 2 or 3 cars that's it. As a dealership, you are going to obviously mark it up just because you can. Even in 6-8 months, these cars are still going to be hot commodity due to it's limited production.

True thats why I said just order one or put down a deposit and wait. You might have to wait 8-12 months, but it beats paying over or double sticker IMO. No production car is worthy of that type of nonsense. There will come a time in which it won't be so hot anymore, happens with all cars. Question is whether or not you're willing to wait until that point.

CHICAGO — Nissan North America said on Wednesday that the 480-horsepower Nissan GT-R is now available for pre-ordering at 691 of approximately 1,400 of its dealerships in the U.S. At the same time, the automaker told Inside Line it has put a formal program in place to help prevent price gouging on the supercar, which starts at $69,850 for the base model.

"We are taking steps to let the dealers know that marking up the car is not a good thing," said Nissan North America Spokesman Darryll Harrison. "We're trying to take steps to curb excessive markups."

Harrison said the automaker is requiring dealership management staff, such as the dealer principal, to conduct all GT-R transactions. "We're not saying salespeople are bad, but management is closer to the day-to-day operations of the dealership, and they don't work on commission," Harrison noted.

Dealers will also be required to file all GT-R paperwork, such as factory orders for the GT-R, through Nissan North America's regional sales offices, which will oversee the sales prices of the car and provide "counsel" in case of price gouging. It is unusual for dealers to have to turn over orders to regional offices for oversight.

The 691 Nissan dealers who won GT-R certification are "many of our urban dealers in larger markets," said Harrison. A complete list is available at nissanusa.com. To become certified, the dealers had to have a master technician on staff who is trained in the "ins and outs of the GT-R," said Harrison. The certified dealers also had to invest in an upgrade of their facility, down to such details as providing larger lifts to accommodate the low and wide body of the GT-R.

Nissan also formally detailed pricing on the GT-R — except for the destination charge, which has not yet been set. The base GT-R is priced at $69,850; the GT-R Premium starts at $71,900. An iPod converter adds $360 to the bottom line, while carpeted GT-R floor mats add $280. "Super Silver," a special exterior paint, costs an additional $3,000. A cold-weather package is a no-cost option and bundles either all-season or snow tires made specifically for the GT-R, as well as different fluids that allow the car to operate in optimum fashion in colder climates.

Harrison said that customers should expect the pre-order process to require a down payment. But the automaker is not allowed to set that amount for the dealers. Harrison said bloggers have been e-mailing him, suggesting that pre-orders may require deposits as low as $500 or $1,000. The Web site Exhaustnote.com warns of additional charges of $25,000-$60,000 over sticker for the GT-R in the U.S. Harrison would not provide advice to consumers on how much of a down payment is reasonable.

Harrison says the company expects a U.S. sales volume for the GT-R of 2,500 units in the first full year, followed by sales of about 1,500 a year afterwards. He emphasized that the 2,500 was a sales number, not a production number. "The 2,500 number is not a production cutoff," Harrison said. "We haven't determined whether or not we'll do that [cut off sales at a certain point]."

Customer deliveries of the GT-R are set to kick off in June.

Nissan Puts Safeguards in Place as It Begins Taking GT-R Orders

It appears that Nissan is goign to at least try to stop this mark up, price gouging, but ultimately there isn't much they can do.

Ultimate Nissan GT-R

The Japanese firm's uprated GT-R has the hardcore Porsche 911 GT2 firmly in its sights.

Thought the Nissan GT-R was already too hot to handle? Think again! Not content with the standard car’s blistering performance, the Japanese firm is developing a mighty V-Spec flagship – and we have all the details.

While the standard GT-R produces 473bhp, the range-topper is tipped to deliver a huge 550bhp from its twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6. The 16 per cent power boost will be matched by a substantial 150kg weight reduction to make the V-Spec one of the most hardcore supercars on the planet.

And the modifications won’t stop with performance upgrades – the body will get an aerodynamic make-over, too. Our picture shows how efficient the standard car is at slicing through the air, and a wild bodykit complete with side skirts and splitter will give the V-Spec maximum downforce at high speeds. Inside, the cabin will be stripped out to help reduce weight, but the dash-mounted touchscreen will remain. In fact, by the time the model arrives, the features available in the hi-tech system will be even more advanced, giving greater control of the set-up on the move.

Nissan has two very specific targets for the thrilling newcomer. Firstly, its engineers are desperate to complete a lap at Germany’s Nürburgring in less than seven minutes and 25 seconds, to take the circuit record.

And they are also keen to topple Porsche’s 911 GT2 and GT3 from the top of performance trackday wish lists. But the extra pace won’t come cheap. The GT-R is set to cost around £55,000 when it goes on sale in the UK in March 2009, and the V-Spec will add £20,000-plus to that. It will join the range before the end of next year.

Too bad autoexpress doesn't understand the fact that before GT-R was even announced, we all KNEW that a V-Spec will be on the way. It's japan for god's sake, they get a new version of the same car every damn year. By the end of this car's lifetime I wouldn't be surprised that there will be a Nismo V-Spec II Nur edition.

, unbadged and zipping through the Phoenix, AZ rush hour traffic. As far as we can tell, this is one of the first sightings of a non-concept southpaw GT-R in the United States. And are those Michigan plates? What it's doing in Phoenix is a bit of a mystery, but we're guessing it hoped there was an actual phoenix to then fight to the death (or testing). How do you know a Jaloper took the photos? That big crack through the windshield is a good sign. (Props to Josh for the awesome grab).

Nissan GB Takes 700 GT-R Orders in First 48 hours
When UK order books opened for the GT-R five days ago, 700 customer deposits were taken in the first 48 hours. Paul Willcox, Managing Director Nissan Motor (GB) Limited commented, “The dealer order line lit-up on the 2 April with an unprecedented amount of orders being placed. This clearly demonstrates the UK’s passion for performance cars and the enthusiastic following that the GT-R has established.” As a result, Nissan GB is trying to secure more units from the production facility in Tochigi Japan.

However, this isn't such an easy request since the GT-R isn't your typical volume car where the pace of the assembly line can be adjusted to meet demand. Willcox continues, “...as the engine of the GT-R is built by hand there is a maximum production capability of 1000 units per month. This volume has to satisfy all global demands covering America, Asia and Europe and therefore it will be late May before we know if we have been successful in our request.”

Pricing for the GT-R starts from £52,900 (OTR) and the supercar is available in three trim levels: Base, Premium Edition and Black Edition. First customer deliveries are expected in March 2009. See press release below for order details.

Press Release

NISSAN GT-R GOING EVEN FASTER THAN EXPECTED

The Nissan GT-R official order book opened for business on 2 April 2008 and within the first 48 hours nearly 700 customer deposits were received for pre-order reservations.
  • 700 orders received within 48 hours of the order book opening
  • First deliveries expected March 2009
  • Additional supply for UK requested to meet demand
Paul Willcox, Managing Director Nissan Motor (GB) Limited commented: “The dealer order line lit-up on the 2 April with an unprecedented amount of orders being placed. This clearly demonstrates the UK’s passion for performance cars and the enthusiastic following that the GT-R has established.

“Waiting lists are not unusual to have for a vehicle of such high performance, specification and value but there is a limit that people will be prepared to wait. In order to meet demand we are now starting to negotiate vigorously with Nissan Europe to secure further volume from our production facility in Tochigi Japan.”

Willcox went on to explain the complexities of GT-R production: “In normal production terms the pace of the line can be increased or decreased to meet with demand but as the engine of the GT-R is built by hand there is a maximum production capability of 1000 units per month.

HOW TO ORDER
Due to the heavy demand Nissan is encouraging customers to place orders sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

To place a reservation for a GT-R, customers can either place an order online at 2009 Nissan GT-R - Official Global Site or visit one of the 10 specialised high performance centres strategically placed around the UK.

For those passionate car enthusiasts who will be signing up for GT-R ownership, there will be a series of tailored customer events and experiences giving them the opportunity to see the car up-close, get to know it and, ultimately, experience its performance before they take delivery. More details of this programme of special, Nissan-supported GT-R customer events will be released in the coming weeks and months.

Nissan High Performance Centres will ensure that GT-R customers receive the level of specialist attention and aftersales care that this special car warrants. They have committed to invest in the specialist sales and technical training for their staff that such a car demands, as well as the highly sophisticated equipment necessary to maintain and repair the GT-R.

The specialist centres have been chosen because they share the passion that customers have for the GT-R, and they have met strict criteria in terms of customer satisfaction, resources and location.

The GT-R boasts an all-new hand-built VR series 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 producing 480 PS (353 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 588 Nm of torque between 3,200 and 5,200 rpm.

Engine power is transmitted to the wheels via an all-new, paddle-shifted GR6 sequential 6-speed dual clutch rear transaxle coupled to an advanced all-wheel drive system. The sequential-shifting transaxle features separate wet clutches for the odd (1,3,5) and even (2,4,6) gears and pre-selects the next highest and next lowest gear for immediate shifts. The driver makes split-second gear-changes via paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

To underline its supercar credentials, an unmodified GT-R completed a lap of the notoriously demanding Nurburgring circuit in Germany in 7mins 38secs, putting it among the fastest production vehicles to ever have lapped the circuit.

Car and Driver - 2009 Nissan GT-R Ownership Myths Dispelled

There’s no speed limiter, the tires won’t wear out in 3000 miles, and Nissan even picks up some of the service costs.

You’ve likely already read the various rumors flying around the Internet about the GT-R’s steep ownership costs; that it has a speed limiter unless you’re at a Nissan-approved track; and that tires can only be replaced four at a time. We heard these things, too, courtesy of a tire supplier to GT-R, so we called up Nissan and got to the bottom of it. Most of the gloom-and-doom hype is unfounded. See below for our questions and Nissan’s responses.

Rumor 1: Nissan’s GPS will only allow full-speed operation in the U.S. at Nissan-approved tracks.

There is no speed limiter on the U.S. spec GT-R unless you count the rev limiter.

Rumor 2: Once a vehicle has been run an approved track, it must be subjected to a post-track safety inspection at a Nissan dealer (brake fluid, suspension, tires, drivetrain, other checks), at an estimated cost of $1,000. Otherwise the warranty is voided.

It is a very good idea to inspect a car of the GT-R’s potential after spending time on a track to verify that everything is still within specifications and not worn. We are investigating offering this type of post-track inspection service to GT-R owners in the U.S. in order to provide the type of customer service some GT-R owners will want.

Rumor 3: The vehicle is set up from the factory with suspension settings for track use, with very high negative camber in the front and substantial toe-in at the rear. If the car is driven on the street with the factory settings the tires will only last 3000–5000 miles, and inner tire wear in the front will be substantial within 1000 miles. The settings may be changed from factory settings for street use prior to delivery, however.

The normal front camber setting is 1 degree 36 minutes negative. This can range plus or minus 10 minutes so if a customer wants to maximize tire wear they can request less negative camber. The rear toe setting is 1.7 mm total toe-in. While these settings are more aggressive than most cars, they are not extreme. The car provides amazing performance and you wouldn’t expect it to behave like a typical car. Based on our testing we anticipate tire life to range from 12,000–15,000 miles in typical street driving. Of course, track usage will definitely diminish tire life.

Rumor 4: The brakes are some type of ceramic composite, and a brake job will cost upwards of $3000.

The GT-R brakes use conventional materials. The brakes have full-floating two-piece rotors. The outer rotor is cast iron and the hub or hat is aluminum. The pads are also conventional materials. They are large Brembos—15-inch rotors front and rear, six-piston calipers front and four-piston rear—so they won’t be inexpensive, but they provide phenomenal stopping performance. We don’t expect a 500-hp engine to cost the same as a 300-hp engine, so we wouldn’t expect 500–hp brakes to cost the same as 300-hp brakes. We don’t have final pricing on the parts yet so we can’t say for certain how much they’ll cost.

Rumor 5: The OE run-flat, vehicle-specific Bridgestone tires, once dismounted, must be discarded. We have not heard if the same requirement applies to the OE Dunlop tires, but that is a reasonable assumption. One of the explanations for this that we’ve heard is that the rims have raised bumps in them at the beads to keep the tire from turning on the rim under acceleration.

Our recommendation is that the GT-R tires not be remounted regardless of brand. The knurled beads do help keep the tires from rotating on the wheels under hard acceleration, but the knurling is primarily there as part of the run-flat system to help keep the tire on the rim in the event of a flat. Remounting the tires is not recommended because of the stretching and flexing necessary to remount the run flat tires on the wheels.

Rumor 6: If any tire on the all-wheel-drive GT-R needs to be replaced, such as for a road hazard, Nissan requires that all four tires be replaced; otherwise the drivetrain warranty is voided.

Because the GT-R is all-wheel drive, matching tire circumference is critical to the performance of the system. We will be providing guidelines to help determine if only one tire can be replaced or if the entire set should be replaced. If the undamaged tires are showing limited wear, it may be possible to replace only the damaged tire. These guidelines have not been finalized yet.

Rumor 7: Estimated annual service costs for the GT-R are $10,000–$15,000.

Service costs for the GT-R will vary greatly depending on usage so we do not have an estimate of annual service costs. But these estimates seem very high, however. There are a series of Performance Optimization Services (POS) required for the GT-R. The Performance Optimization Services (POS) are inspections and adjustments (if needed) of three major vehicle performance systems: Engine settings, transmission settings, and wheel alignment. These services are required to keep the car functioning at optimal performance and are done free of charge for the first 36 months. These services are necessary to keep the warranty in full effect for these systems.

The first Performance Optimization Service is performed at 1000 miles. The subsequent services are performed at 12, 24, and 36 months. Additionally, it is recommended these services be continued annually beyond the first three years, but they will be at customer expense.

While this is not a free maintenance program since it doesn’t include oil changes or other maintenance, it should make keep the ownership costs pretty reasonable for such a high-performance car.

Rumor 8: Nissan is struggling with finalizing the full-disclosure form that customers are required to read and sign prior to taking delivery.

We are still finalizing the delivery materials but I wouldn’t characterize it as struggling. The GT-R is unique in offering incredible performance to a very broad range of customers so we want to make sure we provide as much information as possible to the customer at delivery to make sure they have a great ownership experience.

Rumor 9: Only the dealer principal is allowed to sell this vehicle. Salespeople are not allowed to sell it, related to the risk that the salesperson may not properly inform the customer about the details of the full-disclosure documentation.

This is a customer-service issue not a disclosure issue. When choosing to become Certified GT-R dealer, the dealers agreed to designate the dealer principal, executive manager, or general manager as the dedicated GT-R sales representative. Since the GT-R will attract a unique customer, Nissan decided a dealership executive would be best positioned to present the vehicle and facilitate the transaction most effectively with potential customers. The ownership experience will be critical to the success of the GT-R, and this requirement involves a dealership executive in a face-to-face relationship with the customer. This should be a positive step for customer satisfaction.

Nissan GT-R smashes ‘Ring record

The new Nissan GT-R has smashed the production car lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced that a production version of the GT-R posted a lap time of 7min 29secs during testing last week.

Ghosn confirmed that the time means the GT-R has delivered on one of its original design objectives: to be “fastest production supercar” in the world.

“This proves that Nissan can compete against anyone,” he said.

The news gives an interesting perspective on unofficial timings of a Skyline GT-R V-Spec prototype caught testing at the Nordschleife, where observers suggested it was lapping in around 7min 25secs. This news means that the production GT-R V-spec is likely to be even quicker than those figures suggest.

Now that is one mighty quick lap time. I find it a bit difficult to believe, Nissan should disclose more information about the car used for this run, eg which type of tyres did they use, and a clear video evidence of this smoking hot lap. How did they manage to reduce 9 sec from their previous attempt, where those rumoured ''damp'' patches on the track during their 1st attempt really affect the lap time this badly?

According to Autoblog.com the car was running on stock Japanese-market tires

GT-R drops 'Ring time down to 7:29 - Autoblog

When the 193-MPH Nissan GT-R set a lap time of 7:38 last year at the 'Ring, besting cars like the Porsche GT3, Lamborghini Murcielago, and Mercedes SLR, the Nissan team was disappointed. There were two damp corners on the track, and everyone was quite sure that the car, piloted by official test driver Tochio Suzuki, could go faster.

Now it has. With a completely dry track, the base model Godzilla-san wearing stock Japanese-market tires shaved 9 seconds off its previous best time, posting a lap time of 7:29. On that same lap, it leapfrogged the Porsche GT2, Koenigsegg, and SLR 722 GT. Now it's flashing its headlights at the Carrera GT and Pagani Zonda F Clubsport, both about one second up the road. So if the standard model on stock tires does 7:29, and the more powerful, lighter GT-R V-Spec has already been casually clocked at 7:25 -- betting on what the GT-R's ultimate best lap time will be begins now... And did we say it can all be yours for $70,000? Damn.

I just want to poke my head in here again and say how much I love this car. I honestly can't wait to see what the V-Spec is going to do around the N'ring.

Nissan is still fine tuning the GTR

We all know the story of the blisteringly quick Nurburgring lap time which the new GT-R has set. At 7 mins and 29 secs, the flagship Nissan is arguably the world’s best priced supercar.

But little, apart from standard tyres and a dryer surface, was known about the reason behind the increase in pace, from its first recorded run of 7 mins 38 secs. Until now.

According to PistonHeads, even though it was said to be unmodified, there were a few tweaks which are set to debut on its European launch.

Nissan is said to be including harder engine mounts and a stiffer transaxle mount for the US version, allowing for more suspension tuning, and the Euro version will include a recalibrated rear differential, and revised steering. Sign off on these ammendments will be in September.

But if the diff and steering settings have netted an increase of nine seconds on the world’s most challenging circuit, there’s little doubt that the GT-R will gain these tweaks as production.

Chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno explained why there will be changes, even after the GT-R’s launch in Japan.

“The GT-R is my son,” he said. “A son grows up and it’s my duty as father to keep improving it.”

Re: Nissan is still fine tuning the GTR

Most who've paid attention know that. Ghosn, and Mizuno have stated that the GT-R will be constantly updated with the newest findings. So this isn't just that the US spec or the Euro spec will get those updates, Japanese customers who already own the car will be able to take their cars to the dealer and get the new harder engine mounts, etc. So, the car still isn't "tuned" it's rather a developing program.

2009 Nissan GT-R Officially Lands on U.S. Soil

WILMINGTON, California — Anticipation has truly begun as a fleet of full production, dealer-bound 2009 Nissan GT-Rs has arrived safely at the Port of Los Angeles, just prior to the supercar's official on-sale date of July 7.

Inside Line sent an intrepid staff photographer to stalk the vast Nissan/Infiniti holding lot until he spied a group of Nissan's new 480-horsepower GT-Rs in red, silver, white and black paint.

Tim Gallagher, senior manger for corporate communications at Nissan North America confirmed that the GT-R's first-year sales volume in North America is 2,400 cars, adding, "70 percent of this has already been pre-ordered."

Annual production volume for the GT-R in North America is expected to settle in at approximately 1,500 units during the vehicle's lifecycle.

Gallagher also reaffirmed that only certified Nissan dealers will offer the GT-R, with approximately 665 dealers currently certified. An extensive dealer training program at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway recently concluded.

Four U.S. ports — Los Angeles; Elizabeth City, New Jersey; Jacksonville, Florida; and Newport News, Virginia — will receive the Tochigi, Japan-built 2009 Nissan GT-R.

Gallagher said no plans have been made yet for the 'first sale' customer.

What this means to you: For a lucky few, the wait is nearly over. For the rest, there's always next year. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

Is Nissan lying about GT-R horsepower? Pretty much.

Back in the late sixties, automakers sometimes purposely under-reported the true horsepower that their solid-lifter, over-cammed and over-carburetor'd monster V8 engines actually delivered. More recently, some manufacturers have overestimated the real power of their vehicles, which has led some to distrust factory horsepower numbers. Owners of the uber-impressive Nissan GT-R have been wondering if they've been lied to regarding real horsepower figures too. But in this case they may actually be getting more than the 480 horses that they had bargained for. In fact, after considering that the coupe is capable of hitting 123 miles per hour in the quarter mile and the fact that it weighs roughly four-thousand pounds, the New York Times Wheels blog estimates that the GT-R really makes 550-580 horsepower at the crank.

While we are certain that the rabid horsepower wars and the debate over the GT-R's true power as compared to its rivals will rage on, NYT's estimates are actually pretty much in line with what Motor Trend got after putting the Nissan supercar on the dyno, and that's a figure that really can't be argued with.
