E-Class (W213/C238/A238) Next E-class on a Severe Diet

The Mercedes-Benz W213 is the fifth generation of the E-Class range. It succeeded the W212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models (C238/A238) share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. Production: February 2016–2023. Model years: 2017–2023.
Going slightly retro could be a huge mistake a tremendous hit. Really risky.

After the w212 'Ponton' affair, there is no way the next E-class is going retro. Nothing out of MB suggests they are going to be doing retro anymore. They are looking forward now, and the clumsiness of the end of Pfeiffer's era is hopefully over. It was reported that Wagener believed the SLS was a missed design opportunity because it was too retro. It looks great, but he has a point, it could have been more modern.

Its cool but i don't think they would greenlight such a radical change on the E as its a classic sedan.

Plus i wonder how this works when a designer leaves the company.
Does the company own the designs he did there, and if they go ahead with it, are they obliged to give credit even if the designer has gone to the another company?

The beauty about the SLS that for a Mercedes it is very clean design , not overdone with slashes everywhere , it is classic looking and will be a future classic more so than the gauche SLR, but for a family of Sports Cars the SLS certainly in a design sense has more visual appeal than either the SLK or SL. I saw the first generation SLK , Brilliant Silver with a red interior and that car still looks great and fresh then you see the new one. ..

There's a reason why the new S-class is so damn beautiful. Because Mercedes design has clearly moved on from a tumultuous handover from one chief to the next. Unfortunately a car as iconic as the SL fell victim to this era. The SLK looks like it does because the SL forced MB's hand. This has been quoted by a designer from within MB itself.

I would have a SL550 if it didn't have that truck-like front end. You have to step up to the SL63 for it to get better. A lot of $$$$.

Mercedes needs to go all out for the next E-Class. Sedan, Coupe, Convertible and Wagon all on the same, state of the art, lightweight, extremely rigid platform, with a stunning interior and a new engine family. New I6 and V8 engine family. Beautiful styling for all variants. Sportier yet just as comfortable and much quieter than the current car. This really needs to happen. The next 5er and A6 scare me if I were running MB.

The S-class proves that they have the know how, but for some reason it seems that the E-class is never born of the same passion that they give the S. I actually think Mercedes did a better job executing the W204 than they did with the W212.

Did you notice a lot of road noise on you test drive Marcus? I don't find our E350 particularly quiet but I have always put it down to the large tyres and sports suspension. The FL E250's I drove seemed noticeable quieter than ours.

I agree, the C seems more resolved especially after the facelift. Clearly the current C is the best small car ever from Mercedes.

On the pre-FL model yes, I didn't notice it on the FL model I just drove, but I didn't drive it on a concrete road that produces that noise.

Some hints about the next generation E-Class coupe and cabriolet. :)

REPORT: Future E-Class Coupe and Cabrio to receive the AMG treatment

Mercedes-Benz officials have recently admitted not offering an AMG variant for the E-Class Coupe and Cabrio was a major management mistake that shall not be repeated in the future.

The main reason for not building such models was the existence of the CLS 63 AMG, which can hardly be called a coupe even though the roofline might tell a different story. Latest market studies have shown to executives the real desire of the market, which is looking to buy a proper high-performance coupe in the business class.

Already late to correct this unfateful happening, Mercedes-Benz reassures now that the next generation of the E-Class Coupe & Cabrio (C 213/A 213), which is to be developed on a 100% 213 series E-Class technical platform, will be available as AMG models. From 2016 onwards, the moment we expect them to launch, the new E 63 AMG (or E 55 AMG) models will be powered by the new 4.0-litre V8 BITURBO tweaked to deliver over 550 hp. Depending on sales of the current generation, the Performance AMG 4MATIC and the subsequent S-Model shall also be retained in the lineup for all the body variants.

Above, you can see a digitally generated image by artist Khalil Bouguerra showing how the E 63 AMG Coupe could have looked if ever produced on the current model generation.

Mercedes is full of shit. They didn't offer an E Coupe AMG because of the C Coupe AMG. Its the same car underneath and the W204 chassis would have had to be seriously upgraded to handle the power of the 5.5L Turbo AMG V8, which would have been the only way to make the coupe/cabrio real E-Class AMG models. The E Cabrio in particular should have gotten something from AMG.

They'll probably be more differentiation this time around. The decision to badge the coupe and cab E-classes was made late into the model program so they weren't true E-classes.

Agreed. Here's another version. Let's hope MB gets it right with the 213. :)

Mercedes-Benz admits they made a mistake in not producing a C207 E63 AMG coupe with the M157 motor

Looking at the AMG lineup there is a bit of a hole. The W212 E63 AMG sedan exists with the M157 V8. The C-Class in both coupe and sedan forms has the M156 V8 to make for a C63 AMG model. If one wants a 63 AMG coupe above the C63 with an M157 V8 they have to jump all the way to the SL or CL despite the fact the E-Class already comes in an E63 AMG model with this motor. Quite perplexing that the E-Coupe is skipped over for an AMG model when practically every other model short of the GLK gets one.

It was nice to see Mercedes-Benz admit not producing an E63 AMG coupe was a mistake. Gerd Junginger who is a Mercedes product manager stated, "Seen from now, yes it was a mistake. At that time, AMG had a different strategy. Now they offer an AMG version in almost all the range.”

When the car was being planned Mercedes did not think an AMG model was a good idea. Which is odd considering the preceding CLK coupe had an AMG variant and even an awesome Black Series AMG variant. This could still be fixed but unfortunately Gerd believes it is too late in the model cycle. The CLK63 Black Series came right at the end as did the C63 Black Series so why not give it a go?

Gerd stated, "It’s the perfect car to be an AMG. It almost looks like an AMG version as it is now. Next time we won’t make the same mistake.” At least the successor will definitely be getting an AMG version. Ah what a could have been...

All of that said, the world needs to go out and buy all the C63s AMG can make, we're approaching the end of an era as BMW did with the M3 ~ the death of natural aspiration. All that will be left is the SLK55 AMG and the SLS.

Words from a passionate MB fan. Can't agree more. From a car enthusiasts point of view, they stuffed it up with the E-class, but it probably looked good on their profit statements.
