The Mercedes-Benz chassis code W221 is the fifth generation S-Class, produced from August 2005 until June 2013. The W221 S-Class was unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as the successor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and the predecessor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222).

Yeah I'm pretty sure that MB will do like Audi and present the AMG model with CF panels. It looks cool and people like it and MB and BMW are bound to follow.

The A8 interior is gorgeous...but looks busy and pieced together from a myriad of panels when compared to the S.

The S-class interior is absolutely seamless and looks superbly comfortable and luxurious.

lol........the sat nav looks like it was fitted after the car was made and wow the arm rest wow......omg.........you would expect to see that in a cheap MPV dont you think? but i suppose some people must like it....

Say what you like about the A8's interior. The truth is though, Mercedes saw it as the benchmark and sought to do better - even going so far as to employ the A8's interior designer to work on the W221. In my opinion, the A8's interior is still more forward looking than the rather bourgeois styling cues of some of the interior details in the W221.

Eventhough I admire hte excellent quality of the ww221 I do like the layout of the A8 inteiror much more. The S and 7er layout looks a bit too goofy and empty due to the lack of buttons.

i thought it was the head of navigation / in car entertainment that left from audi? did the interior guy leave also? may be they saw the materials as a bench mark but i cant see how they saw the design of it

what did you think of the w220 interior then? that had a lot of buttons lol

The head designer of the A8's interior most certainly did work on the W221.

I truly believe you would have to be pretty blinkered by bias to not see that the A8 is a far more progressive interpretation of a luxury car interior.

Please don't get me wrong though Mr. Mercedes and yomomwhat, I would still choose the S class over the A8, I am a Mercedes fan when all said and done - but the A8 is a very, very desirable car.

well i dont want to start an argument but i really dont like the audi interior one bit, the armrest.....like i said before comes from an MPV, may be a vauxhall...and the centre console is like from a commercial vehicle......it really does look like the stuff has been stuck on, especially the navigation screen
as for the designer thing, yea you are probably correct, all i remember reading was that the head of audis navigation had gone to mercedes but who cares

Just a sidenote.. i love that loose fit leather on the new S..it looks very nice.. and comfy..infact i know its comfy :D

Hmmmmmmmm, no comment, except to say that I would not want to have anything in loose fit leather.

I didnt get your comment.. excuse my bad english.. but are you saying that you dont like that loose fit style??

Yep, I never liked the loose leather in the W220, the W221 is a big improvement because it is much more tailored.

BTW Artist, your English is excellent.

If you look at this pic it looks like the leather is looser in the W221.. its pretty streched in my W220..

PS
Thnx for the nice comment :D

very loose looking, i wonder why they did that? Doesn't look very fit too me. I am just a fool for the W220! Love the design and all. And the A8 has better interior.

Guys, the leather you talking about is perforated for the tiny fans in the seats. Costomers never call the leather on the seats loose.

It`s the leather on the door panels that customers call gathered (not loose)
Check out the door panels in this pic compared to the one above, you`ll see what I`m talking about. This adds personality the interior in the upper class models like the S600.

For some reason it seems like MB is getting away from the gathered leather on the doors unfortunately. That was something that basically most MB's had and adds a lot of class and character to the interior. But you look at the ML doesn't have it but the old one did, the New S only has it as designo but the old one had it in every model, the R doesn't have it, the old SLK had it and the new one doesn't....

Is it cost cutting or just a new design direction? In the case of the ML and R I do think it is cost cutting because the door panels have no leather except for the door pulls and arm rest. I hope it's not a sign of things to come but it definetly looks like it is.

I think it`s more of a new design direction for MB. A lot of developement costs went into the new S-Class. So having gathered leather in the door panels wouldn`t be a problem, it just doesn`t suit the design of the new ultra modern cabin if you will.

The W220 S-Class was more classy than modern, The W221 is the other way around in terms of design direction. Imagine gathered leather in the W221s` interior door panels, It would look like a mess.

You are right that the newly designed doorpanels of the S aren't condusive to the gathered leather because they are so big, and they would look messy... The ML though I think could have them, and there actually kits to add them and the ML63 has them. But the R also like u said is a victim of the new design direction.

I think overall that you are right, it is just the product of the new design direction.
