Predictive Powertrain Control: anticipatory cruise control can be retrofitted with immediate effect
  • Predictive Powertrain Control anticipatory cruise control: retrofit and reduce consumption
The anticipatory cruise control system Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) is available with immediate effect as a retrofit solution across Europe for the new Actros, the Antos and the Arocs. PPC reduces fuel consumption by up to five percent, thereby contributing demonstrably to the lowering of the total operating costs of a truck. Based on a typical annual mileage of around 130,000 km in long-distance operations and a fuel saving of five percent, PPC pays for itself within eight months, depending on fuel consumption, even at the currently low fuel prices. And now customers who had not opted for PPC before are also able to benefit from its well-proven advantages.

PPC can be retrofitted in almost all trucks in the current Actros, Antos and Arocs series. The truck must have been newly registered from August 2012, and the fully automated Mercedes PowerShift 3 transmission must be installed. An additional control unit is a major component of the retrofitting kit.

As a GPS cruise control system, PPC not only regulates the vehicle speed. On the basis of three-dimensional maps, the system uses peak momentum gained on downhill gradients, throttles back in good time when cresting hills, intervenes in the gearshift strategy and, not least, uses the transmission's neutral EcoRoll position to minimise fuel consumption. This leads to a predictive style of driving based on perfect, round-the-clock knowledge of the route and vehicle. It has digital 3D maps stored which cover around 300,000 km of roads: this equates to 95 percent of all European trunk roads.

And the really ingenious feature: the PPC retrofit solution is compatible with any FleetBoard telematics services already being used in the truck, and all functions are retained and will be integrated with the new system.

Fuels HVO, BTL, GTL and CTL approved according to norm prEN 15940: Latest generation of OM 470 and OM 471 engines from Mercedes-Benz approved for alternative fuels with immediate effect
  • From the beginning of July the latest generations of the OM 470 and OM 471 Mercedes-Benz truck engines are approved for use with alternative fuels according to norm prEN 15940.
Stuttgart - Mercedes-Benz Trucks approves the use of alternative fuels according to norm prEN 15940 with immediate effect for the latest generations of the OM 470 (displacement 10.7 l) and of the OM 471 (displacement 12.8 l). These include the subgroups Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), Biomass To Liquid (BTL), Gas To Liquid (GTL), Coal To Liquid (CTL) which are different resources converted to fuels through chemical processes.

The compatibility of fuels according to norm prEN 15940 has been proved by numerous tests. The engines are designed as standard for the new fuel type.

Since the characteristics of fuels according to norm prEN 15940 mean that it is absolutely comparable to conventionally produced petroleum-based diesel fuel, no modifications to the engines or their peripherals are necessary. The injection process, fuel lines and seals remain unchanged. The same is also true of the intervals for oil changes and for cleaning the particulate filter, while there is no restriction in terms of warranty and goodwill policy. Engine performance and torque data also remain the same if fuels according to norm prEN 15940 are used.

Since February 2016 Mercedes-Benz trucks with the first generation OM 470 and OM 471 Euro VI engines as well as the medium-duty engine series OM 936 and OM 934 have been operating with fuels according to norm prEN 15940 (this includes also HVO).

Merry Christmas to the British Royal Household: CharterWay delivering a royal Christmas tree to the Queen

Stuttgart / Coburg
  • From Coburg to Windsor Castle: Mercedes-Benz CharterWay delivering a stylish festive ambience all the way from Germany
  • Present for Her Majesty: The British royal family's Christmas celebrations include a magnificent fir tree from the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha family's forest
  • 2000 Christmas baubles and glass ornaments from Lauscha, a town famed for its glassblowing
  • Special transport with Mercedes-Benz Actros
Stuttgart / Coburg – This year the town of Coburg in Bavaria, Germany, is sending a beautiful, specially grown fir tree to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. The tree will help to create a stylish and festive ambience at Windsor Castle where the monarch traditionally celebrates Christmas. Following an official send-off from the Albertsplatz square in Coburg on 12 November 2016, Mercedes-Benz CharterWay transported the royal Christmas tree via the Belgian town of Oudenaarde (with which Coburg is twinned) to Windsor Castle, where the load arrived during the late afternoon on 15 November. The 12 metre tall fir tree is set to be positioned outside the royal residence today and sumptuously decorated. On 19 November 2016, the Christmas tree will become visible from far and wide for the first time when it is illuminated at the traditional switching on of the Christmas lights at Windsor Castle. With the royal residence as the backdrop, this will create a stately pre-Christmas atmosphere as well as spreading festive cheer.

Taking the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845 LS alongside haulage operator Christoph Hofmann from Bad Rodach near Coburg is Christian Schleicher, who is responsible for marketing communications for the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles sales department in Bavaria. "It is a great honour for CharterWay to be permitted to transport this precious load comprising the tree itself and 2000 handmade Christmas baubles," he stated. Christmas baubles and glass ornaments have been provided by workshops in Lauscha/Thuringia, a town which is internationally renowned for its glassblowing. Some of the mouth-blown golden baubles bear the town crest of Coburg, others the crest of the Sonneberg district in the federal state of Thuringia. The fir tree comes from the forest owned by the ducal House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Prince Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emmanuel of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony and great-great grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, is the most famous son of the town of Coburg. Known as Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria was granted the title of Prince Consort in 1857 and is credited with having introduced the tradition of a Christmas tree into England in 1848. Due to this historical tie, the ducal family resident in Coburg have offered the British royal family a present of a Christmas tree from their forest. On the one hand, the Christmas tree from Coburg, which made its journey to Windsor Castle in November 2016, symbolises the historical link with the British royal family. The town of Coburg also wished to make reference to the anniversary in 2018 of the British tradition of having a Christmas tree and the festivities to mark the 200th birthday of Prince Albert in 2019.

"Coburg approached us due to our many years of contact with the Callenberg Forest managed by the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha family estate," says Schleicher. "We have ourselves been selecting and felling beautiful trees from there for years now for the showrooms of our company-owned sales and service outlets, with Christoph Hofmann acting as intermediary. This activity is well-known and so we've been tasked by the town of Coburg with organising and transporting the royal Christmas decorations from Coburg to Windsor Castle."

The shipment required specialist expertise and equipment: The imposing royal tree is 12 metres long. It weighs around two tonnes and is up to four metres in diameter. The total volume of 54 m³ is the equivalent of approximately 26 Europallets each containing 64 beverage crates – thus a total of 1664 crates. There were also around 100 cardboard boxes of 60x40x40 cm in size, which contain the royal Christmas baubles, and a separate 120x30x30 cm box containing the decoration that will top the tree. To transport the tree, Mercedes-Benz CharterWay used a tri-axle curtainsider semitrailer with sliding soft top. This is because the items needed to be loaded and unloaded from the top and sides with a crane and timber forwarder. The branches were tied together using tensioning straps to a maximum width of 2.5 metres. The fragile glass baubles were packed in cardboard boxes and safely stored.

Painted in festive silver, the tractor unit is a Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845 LS with a second-generation OM 471 diesel engine delivering an output of 330 kW (449 hp). It has a BigSpace L cab with a level floor. The equipment includes Predictive Powertrain Control, cruise control, ESP and Active Brake Assist 3, as well as a large number of safety assistance systems such as Lane Keeping Assist, Attention Assist and Proximity Control Assist. To facilitate routing and ensure a safe arrival, an on-board unit provides FleetBoard telematics support.

Mercedes-Benz (Daimler) MENA (Middle-East & North Africa) is going to launch the new Actros & Arocs series in these market soon, they have teased with an old teaser video of new Actros while it was launched in 2011 & a new year greeting in website were both side of stars we can see new Actros & Arocs grilles.

Mercedes have launched the new Actros & Arocs only in Europe, Australia and very few selected Asian markets like Russia. The reason for not launching the new editions in other markets was quoted as the unavailability of Euro 6 compatible fuels and older model Actros were doing good in business & operation profit for the operators. At the same time when competitions like Volvo & MAN launched the new models with engines compatible for lesser quality Euro 4 or 3 fuels. So Daimler MENA decided to bring in their latest models, for that they have been undergoing test & research and made their truck compatible for poor fuels for Euro 6 engines. Rest is to be heard soon.

On the other hand for all other major truck markets Daimler Trucks have their own sub brands or brand association specific for the market to capture mass volume & retain their leadership in Global CV business - for eg: US & Australia they have the Freightliner, Japan & East Asian countries have Fuso and India have Bharat-Benz.

The New Actros Debuted

New Actros.webp

The Modernised avatar of the Mercedes flagship truck.

World premiere of the new Actros in Berlin. Mercedes-Benz Trucks presented the brand’s new flagship to the world press on Wednesday evening. The new Actros increases safety for all road users, efficiency for operators and comfort for drivers to unprecedented levels.

The most important and most spectacular innovation is Active Drive Assist, with which Mercedes-Benz Trucks puts partially automated driving into series production. The new Active Drive Assist can brake, accelerate and steer independently. Unlike systems that only work at certain speeds, Active Drive Assist offers the driver partially automated driving in all speed ranges for the first time in a series-produced truck. New elements are the active latitudinal control and the combination of longitudinal and lateral control in all speed ranges through the fusion of radar and camera information.

Active Drive Assist builds upon the tried-and-tested adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function and the lane-keeping assistant from Mercedes-Benz. While responsibility for monitoring the traffic situation remains with the driver, the system provides significant support and makes an important contribution to increased road safety.

“Expanding market-leading activities for automated vehicles”

“With more than 60 innovations, the new Actros already puts the future of heavy-duty trucks on the road today. Just four years after the presentation of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 driving in automated mode, we are launching the new Actros with the world’s first partially automated assistance system in a series-produced truck,” stated Stefan Buchner, Member of the Daimler Trucks Divisional Board of Management and Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks. “We at Daimler Trucks are thus further extending our leading role for automated driving. When fitted with Active Drive Assist, our new Actros makes the logistics business significantly safer for all road users and more efficient for our customers.”

Active Brake Assist 5: the new generation of the emergency braking assistant

Mercedes-Benz Trucks underscores its pioneering position for the safety of heavy-duty trucks – a role that has been affirmed time and again by market demand – also with the once again improved Active Brake Assist of the fifth generation. Since the launch of Active Brake Assist 1 in 2006, nearly 230,000 trucks from Mercedes-Benz have been sold with the emergency braking assistant on board.

Active Brake Assist 5 supports the driver when there is a danger of a rear-end collision or a collision with person crossing, oncoming or walking in the truck’s lane – also with an automatic full application of the brakes if necessary. A new aspect is that Active Brake Assist 5 now works with a combination of radar and a camera system. This allows it to monitor the space ahead of the vehicle even better and to react to persons in the road even better.

New Actros 4.webp

First series-produced truck with mirror-cam instead of exterior mirrors to enhance safety and efficiency

The new Actros differs from its predecessor also visually: its main mirrors and wide-angle mirrors have been replaced by mirror-cams as standard equipment. The mirror-cam is an enormous improvement in terms of aerodynamics, safety and vehicle handling. The system offers greatly improved all-round visibility and consists of two cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle and two 15-inch displays on the A-pillars inside the driver’s cab.

New Actros 5.webp

Connectivity and intuitive operation also due to the multimedia cockpit

With the design of the interior and the controls, Mercedes-Benz Trucks strictly follows the inside-out principle. All new developments are thought out from the driver’s perspective, because truck drivers sit behind the wheel for many hours a day. After work or between driving hours, they spend their breaks in the vehicle. How the human-machine interface (HMI) is designed has a major impact on driver performance. That’s why the design engineers design a complete workplace. The new Actros with its completely revised HMI offers the driver unique operating and display comfort. Two interactive screens are standard equipment and serve as a central source of information in the driver’s digital workplace of the future. In addition to all driver-relevant basic information, the assistance systems are also visualized here. Smartphones are of course integrated via Apple CarPlayTM and Android Auto.

The Truck Data Center permanently connects the truck with the Cloud and is the basis for all connectivity solutions, such as apps that help the driver to perform his transport tasks. This means that connectivity becomes reality in the new Actros. Real-time control of the truck through the connected services provided by Fleetboard and the preventive service product Mercedes-Benz Uptime offer truck operators further added value. That includes predictive maintenance and shorter stand times. Furthermore, the new remote-control key as standard equipment gives the driver additional operating convenience.

New Actros 6.webp

Up to five percent lower fuel consumption

The fuel consumption of the new Actros is once again lower than that of its predecessor with savings of up to three percent on highways and up to five percent on country roads. Aerodynamic improvements have been achieved thanks to mirror-cams and new rear-edge flaps. The intelligent Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) for cruise-control and gear shifting operates even more efficiently and can now also be used on country roads thanks to its expanded map material. In addition, a new, fuel-saving rear-axle ratio is in use.

Not fan of that, if screen gets broken or something happens to camera...and it doesnt seem "sun-proof" as mirror.
