Detroit 2012: Mercedes-Benz Talks Engine Downsizing and Nine-Speed Transmissions

Written by: Christopher Nelson - AutomobilMag

Mercedes-Benz doesn’t make do with what’s available. Take the designated conversation spaces at Cobo Hall for instance. There are plenty of nooks, crannies, and corners where one could shove a table and chairs, creating a suitable place to conduct an interview. Most automakers follow this method, but Mercedes wouldn’t even think of it. Instead they constructed a temporary office suite, complete with soft leather chairs and frosted glass doors, to host meet-and-greet’s for the two press days of NAIAS. This is where we met with Bernhard Heil, vice president of powertrain development for Mercedes-Benz.

Even more clear than his English is just how much this German cares about the work he’s doing. Simply mentioning the brand’s new SL, Heil passionately dives into an at-length description of what powers the flagship. He spends a few minutes going over the 4.6-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-8, poring over minuscule details that include centrally-located piezo fuel injectors and advanced multispark technology. He finishes his description by saying that these basic ingredients, which make up what Mercedes calls “Blue Direct” technology, will be staples in future four-cylinder engines.

Small-displacement Mercedes engines made it into the news earlier this week when Daimler announced its plan to produce four-bangers in Nissan’s Dechard, Tennessee, plant to supply engines for C-class vehicles built at Daimler’s plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Maybe this will be where Benz decides to build a more potent version of the 1.8-liter found in the current SLK250, which has just about 200 horsepower. Heil acknowledges that the Benz engine is not as powerful as boosted four-cylinders being put out by competitors like BMW and Cadillac, but he tells us that the planning for that engine began in 1998 and that there is a lot of room for improvement. He also says that as engine cylinder count continues to drop, powertrain engineers may begin toying with ways to get more driving noise into the cabin, something they don’t currently dabble in with their V-6 and V-8 engines.

As Mercedes cuts displacement, it plans on adding gears to bump up efficiency even more. It’s public knowledge that Mercedes is working on and testing a nine-speed automatic transmission. When asked when we might see it, Heil declined to comment but assured us that they’re hard at work on the technology. So why nine gears? “We see a ratio with nine speeds that is absolutely efficient,” says Heil. He continues to say that if they had seen any kind of advantage adding more gears, they would have. Still, he laughs that marketing could win out in the end. When competitors come out with ten- or eleven-speed gearboxes, Mercedes-Benz may have to play along and add more gears.

The final minutes of our conversation went to a topic we’re always wondering about: small diesels bound for the US market. Right now, American buyers can have diesel technology in an E-, GL-, M-, R-, or S-class, but none of these engines are what you’d call “small.” At the 2009 New York auto show, Benz was showing off its Vision E250 BlueTEC concept powered by the company’s 2.2-liter, four-cylinder diesel, but we’ve never had a real hope of getting the engine stateside. Why? Heil says that the American buyer is still too fixated on gasoline. But when asked if we still might get to see the 2.2-liter, Heil’s response is promsing: “I think that could be the case, yes.”

In this case I can now approve BMW for having chosen the I6 over the V6 for the next M3/M4, but if Mercedes comes back with I6 engines, I think the only german cars I'll think of are Mercedes and Porsche, no more BMW.

I really hope so, if that means you stop talking about BMW!
Really, really REALLY hope so!

I really don't think I shall. If I really "leave" BMW and join Audi, Mercedes and Porsche, there'll be even more reason for me to talk badly about BMW. Sorry I am not going to please you. ;)

If only to annoy Klier, the holder and protector of all things BMW, it's worth it. ;) :D

Refreshed 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK to get diesel option

Even though spy shots signal that exterior adjustments on the next Mercedes-Benz GLK will be subtle, there's one giant adjustment coming under the hood, and it smells like oil – in a good way. Automotive News says the revamped softroader will gain a new diesel engine option. For its part, Mercedes-Benz hasn't said which of its oilburners it will offer with the GLK, but it's been hinted that it could be the 2.1-liter turbo diesel mill with 204 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque that sees duty in models like the C-Class and M-Class in other lands.

"Forget the hype and back to reality"

Daimler Board Member and Head of Mercedes-Development Dr. Thomas Weber defined in Vienna the future direction of the company, which is probably representative for other industry representatives: "E-mobility can be incredibly fascinating. But we have to get away from the hype and back to reality," he commented on the fact that in the previous year of 3.4 million newly registered cars in Germany only 2,361 were electric cars.

Mercedes and AMG warn goal of one million electric vehicles in Germany by 2020
may be unrealistic without incentives. :)

Might appear as early as Q1 2013. ;) Was mentioned here a while back:

The M274 replaces the M271 Evo. This will result in the following options:

E 200 BE (M274 DE 16 AL) of 1.6 liters and 156 hp (could also be called E 180 BE),
E 220 BE (M274 DE 20 AL) 2.0 liters displacement and 184 hp (could also be called E200 BE),
E 250 BE (M274 DE 20 AL) 2.0 liters displacement and 211 hp, and the
E 300 BE (M274 DE 20 AL) 2.0 liters displacement and 252 hp.

These are all Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder turbo gasoline engines with direct injection technology.

Another new feature is the E 400 BE. This is the M276 DE 35 AL (3.5-liter V6 turbo). It makes
around 340 hp and 450 NM. The performance of the E 500 BE should be increased from 408 hp
to 435 hp and 700 NM.

With the diesel engines, the E 300 BlueTEC with the OM642 (211 hp) will probably be dropped.
The BlueTEC versions of the OM651 (4-cylinder) and the OM642LS V6 diesel will likely be used instead.

Thanks. Now only Lexus is left without TC engines. Any hint on what engine is going to power the newt C AMG, tuned V6 or detuned V8?

AMG may be considering this one? :)

"AMG Performance 50" helps to reduce fleet consumption
Another goal of "AMG Performance 50" is the consistent reduction of fleet consumption. According to Ola Källenius: "By the 50th anniversary of AMG, we want to achieve CO2 emissions of around 200 grams per kilometre for the entire AMG model range. Our new AMG compact cars will of course help us to achieve this ambitious plan, but we are also aiming for a significant reduction in fuel consumption for other model series too. Many AMG models are currently already the "best in class" when it comes to consumption, emissions, maximum performance and torque. Our success is based on state-of-the-art technology."

Acting as a role model in this area is the SLK 55 AMG. The eight-cylinder roadster incorporates Formula 1 technology for the road. It uses the world's most fuel-efficient V8 engine which features the newly developed AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system. Adapted from the world of Formula 1, this technology enables the SLK 55 AMG to achieve a fuel consumption level which at 8.4 litres is 30% lower, and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre (NEDC combined). The technology is used in a similar way in the approx. 750 hp Mercedes-Benz V8 engines found in Formula 1. As efficiency also plays a major role at the pinnacle of motor racing, four cylinders are disabled by shutting off the fuel injection when the driver has lower load demands.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL is further proof of the pioneering role played by Mercedes-AMG in the development of intelligent drive concepts. The drivetrain with high-voltage lithium-ion battery for the new SLS AMG E-CELL is produced in cooperation with experts from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth in the UK. The SLS AMG E-CELL will celebrate its premiere this autumn at the Paris Motor Show. Mercedes-AMG will be launching a series production run of the first purely electric driven super sports car, and the first customers are expected to take delivery of this gullwing model with electric drive in 2013.

Both the SLS AMG E-CELL and the V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system in the SLK 55 AMG are examples of the goal to achieve a sustainable improvement in efficiency and a reduction in fleet consumption.
