New Audi A9 coming?

Yeah, looking forward that how sexy the A9 going to be, especially the S9. Maybe in future the Audi will build the RS9, hope so

The A9 Coupe.

No. It's not unique enough. A flagship coupe has to do much better than a widened A5. Sorry, but even though the PS artist has done a great job, I don't like what I'm seeing.

This is actually a rather old rendering that made its' rounds through the German automotive press over one year ago. As there has been a substantial degree of upheaval regarding new model planning in the meantime, it is now very questionable whether Audi will introduce an A9 at all. Audi, as opposed to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, tends to be a bit more secretive with regard to what lies in their product pipeline and appear to relish the "element of surprise". Audi is a company that often keeps the discerning automotive enthusiastic public guessing.

Audi Jetstream Quattro Design Study Could Answer the Brand's A9 Question

We have heard that Audi is looking for a different kind of a halo car than the R8 for its lineup in the guise of an A9 flagship model sitting atop the A8 luxury saloon, but as recently reported, the automaker's head honchos have yet to decide what direction it will take.
Evidently, Patrick Bücker, a transportation design student from Germany's Pforzheim University, has also come to know about Audi's dilemma, and he has an answer for the A9, in the form of a futuristic concept named the Jetstream Quattro.

Bücker crafted a static scale model of his conceptual model, that he says, was visually inspired by classic horse-drawn carriages and modern-day business jets.

"At a first sight, it looks like a broken volume or two cars, but everything is connected with the body side where all the volumes are connected and intersect," says Bücker. "As an homage to the coachman-seat, there is a carbon-fiber element in the front instead of the regular hood, which also shows Audi's design theme to integrate the space-frame into the design."

Check out the concept in the gallery below.

Rear reminds me of the C3 Audi 100 Avant.
Without that weird and huge windshield (just make it normal) it would be quite nice.

The design study posted above is actually quite dated. I recall having first seen it (at least) several months ago. Perhaps' Autobild is simply publishing some "filler" during the typical summer dearth of automotive news.

The A9 is a bit of an enigma. An "on again-off again" project that has been described as anything and everything from a "luxurious, traditional 2 door coupe, M-B S-Coupe rival" to "a sleek A8-based 4 door coupe positioned above the A7 Sportback" to "a hyper-luxurious 4 door coupe/SUV crossover positioned above BMWs' X6".

Quite the phantom...

It will be interesting to see if Audi sucker-punches us with a concept car at one of the upcoming auto shows.

Likely to be a four-door coupe
Sources close to Audi are saying a new concept serving as an A9 preview will be introduced in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Rumored to take the shape of a four-door coupe, the concept will be more than five meters long and will be based on the MLB platform. It will provide a first glimpse of Audi's new design language implemented by the firm's design chief Marc Lichte who also worked on the Volkswagen Passat B8so don't expect a major makeover.

The same report indicates the concept will serve as a preview for a range-topping Audi A9 believed to come out sometime in 2017. It will allegedly feature a "highly technical look" with a redesigned single-frame front grille, an aluminum body and laser headlights. According to a source cited by Autocar, "it builds on the design in place today but takes it to a whole new level."

Audi's forthcoming concept will also showcase a new interpretation of the digital instrument cluster which debuted on the third-gen TT. In addition, new connectivity features will also be previewed before being implemented in the next-gen A8 and the rumored A9.

Audi A9 - The future of Audi Luxury?

The Audi A9 concept is a stylish proposal for a luxury sports saloon which was developed by the talented Spanish designer Daniel Garcia. Garcia's previous work includes the Ducati 6098 R concept from 2009.

The A9 concept would be positioned higher than Audi's current flagship model, the A8, and is aimed at other top-end luxury saloons like the Porsche Panamera, and if it ever went into production, the Lamborghini Estoque.

The styling of the A9 concept was partially inspired by the stunning architectural style of Santiago Calatrava's buildings in "La Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias" (The City of Arts and Sciences) in Garcia's hometown of Valencia. This influence can be seen in the clean flowing lines of the vehicle and futuristic styling features. Calatrava's buildings look like they come from 100 years in the future, and so does this.

The single-piece windscreen and roof is formed from an as-yet undiscovered nanotechnology material which features an automatic-system for repairing damage, and it can also be adjusted for color and opacity. The bodywork of the Audi A9 concept also features a unique 'electronic painting' system which means the vehicle's color can be changed at the touch of a button.

The proposed drivetrain for the A9 concept is an advanced hybrid setup which uses an internal combustion engine working in conjunction with four in-wheel electric motors.

Of course, with Garcia's concept being an independently created design, any A9 model Audi decides to produce will probably look significantly different. But with the A7 currently notching up fairly healthy sales, and Audi keen to keep pace with BMW and Mercedes in filling just about every niche possible. An even larger, more luxurious four-door coupe - possibly verging on limousine proportions - isn't unimaginable.

It's rumored that while an A9 model hasn't been approved for production yet, engineers and accountants within the company are currently assessing the business case for such a vehicle. Audi's MLB (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform - currently used for the A8 - would provide a suitable basis for the vehicle, and there are plenty of drivetrains to choose from, including both large displacement conventional engines and hybrid setups.

That's a whole bunch of cars, no wonder R&D budget is so high....

These renderings are almost 4 years old. Thus being an inaccurate indication of what to expect at the 2014 L.A. show, I suspect.
Yes, I just checked and these renders are from 2011. Still, they give an idea of what Audi might present in LA.

Audi is set to showcase an advanced four-door concept that reveals the new design language to be adopted by all of its future models.

The concept will be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show in November and will also preview a new aluminium-intensive flagship.

The as yet unnamed concept is currently under construction at Audi’s prototype workshop in Ingolstadt. It is claimed to reveal the direction in style that Audi models – from the entry-level A1 through to next year’s successor to the Q7 – will take under the company’s new design boss, Marc Lichte.

The concept also provides the first tacit clues to the size, shape, appearance, packaging and features of the long-mooted A9 – a high-tech range-topping model scheduled for launch in 2017.

Planned to sit at the very top of the Audi range, the A9 has been conceived to rival the recent wave of design-led luxury saloons, including the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and he high-end versions of the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

The A9 is based on the latest evolution of Audi’s MLB platform. It shares its mechanical and electrical package with the upcoming fifth-generation A8, alongside which the A9 is due to be produced at Audi’s Neckarsulm factory.

As with its established four-door sibling, the new flagship saloon-cum-coupé adopts Audi’s latest aluminium spaceframe construction and other weight-reducing initiatives, including the use of carbonfibre in non-load-bearing elements.

The aim is to bring the A9 into production with a kerb weight comparable with that of the smaller, four-year-old A7, which tips the scales at 1660kg in base front-wheel-drive 2.8 V6 guise.

Secrecy surrounds the powertrain that Audi intends to showcase on its latest concept in Los Angeles. However, Audi sources confirm that it will be relevant to the production version of the A9, which has been engineered to support front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, in line with the new A8.

Among the engines planned for the big four-door are a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 and a revised version of Audi’s existing twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. A performance-orientated S9 model is expected to use the twin-turbo V8 and have as much as 600bhp.

The petrol engines will be joined by the latest evolution of Audi’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel, in single and electrically operated twin-turbo guises. There will also be a new 4.0-litre V8 diesel, which is currently undergoing development at parent firm Volkswagen’s R&D centre in Braunschweig, Germany.

Two plug-in hybrid options are also planned for a pair of A9 e-tron models. Set to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January, the petrol-electric and diesel-electric combinations will first be introduced to the new, second-generation Q7, due for launch next year.

They are set to provide the A9 e-tron with a zero-emissions electric range of up to 31 miles and a CO2 output of less than 80g/km.

An Autocar source privy to a series of design proposals for the A9, which stretches to more than five metres in length, says it features a highly technical look, with a newly interpreted single-frame grille, laser headlights, precise detailing within its aluminium body structure and a newly defined shutline architecture.

Our source said: “It builds on the design in place today but takes it to a whole new level. The design department is working very closely with the production department to give future Audi models a more technical look, with added accuracy in terms of build.”

As well as previewing the exterior design of future Audis, the Los Angeles concept will showcase new interior developments, including the future direction of Audi’s new digital instrument cluster, as found in the latest TT, and new connectivity options to be made available on the new A8 and its A9 sibling.
