Monster's car shopping

A couple of my personal thoughts...

1. Never buy new unless it's absolutely justifiable from a fiscal perspective e.g. you've saved for years for that special something like a 911 or Cayman. Rather spend less of your hard-earned money on something that's going to take a huge initial hit of depreciation. Rather let someone or the dealer take the initial hit. I like buying "demo" models.

2. Stay away from M-Sport suspension unless you intend on finding yourself lapping Phillip Island. If you're buying an out-and-out sporting model like an M car or AMG Sport then firmer suspension is justified by the increase in performance (just watch out for those speed traps!).

3. The W204 is still a fantastic car but be wary of buying the previous generation model - it always leaves an itch that needs scratching for the newer model sooner than later.

4. If you truly have had a bad experience with Subaru dealers then rather stay away - you'll be forever by small issues resulting from preconceived notions. Besides, the 3.6R is lovely but in fuel consumption stakes vs performance delivery it's a bit of a throwback.

5. Unless you're buying a car for the sole purpose of driving enthusiasm always go for an automated transmission. [Which I expect you will...]

6. When buying a new BMW 3 Series be mindful of the spec:
  • Steer clear of superfluous shit like sunroofs, navigation [your phone does a better job], adaptive headlights, electric seats, comfort access pack and so on... nice toys but you're making BMW profitable and not necessarily safeguarding future trade-in value.
  • Sport Line is great; couple this with Sport Auto, Adaptive M dampers and Xenons. The former two allow for a configurable driving experience which goes a long way toward one not getting bored with the car - essential for the enthusiast in you.
  • Avoid M-Sport and 19" upwards wheel sizes
  • The 328i and 320d represent the sweet spot in the line up in my opinion but I wouldn't buy diesel if I were you - sounds like you're a petrolhead.
  • How important is a wagon to you in the context of the overall ownership experience.
7. What does AWD represent to you, what does it give you and when will you need it?

8. Why the Lexux NX and not the IS? The wagon shape thing?

9. Try and hunt out for that elusive gem in demo spec and negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. Screw the sales person - he's there to provide you with service and nothing more - you're more informed than he is* and you're the one spending the money. *Generally speaking.

Thanks for the detailed reply Martin !

I completely agree with point 1, and thanks for the advice about staying way from the M sport suspension and what to avoid when picking the options for the 3 series. As for point three, I guess the itch will always be there.

I know all too well about the fuel consumption and engine fluid consumption of the Subaru H6. I never managed to get below 13L/100km ever! It isn't the most efficient engine and it lacks low end torque but I am going to miss its free revving nature and the smoothness of the H6.

To answer your question about the need of a wagon, it is a must for me, my parents travel away and back to Sydney every month so I need a car with a high enough boot space to fit 3 big luggage and at least 2 passengers in the car. I tried and failed to fit all of their stuff inside the E-class, the boot wasn't big enough to fit them all.

Point 7 is a fantastic question! AWD means an extra layer of security and reassurance for me when I drive my car in a sporting manner, I think I have changed the way I drive because of that. I don't think I can answer your question completely until I spend some time driving another car and realise what I have missed out on. How will you answer your question since you have changed from the WRX to the 3er?

Lexus don't offer the wagon for the current IS, and the CT hatch back thing is too small. I test drove the NX out of curiosity, but it turns out to be a much better over all package than I thought it would be.

Also completely agree with point 9, I do forget it sometimes out of politeness.

I think you should try a test drive in a W205 wagon I personally doubt you will have software issues or build issues remember the car is now almost a year in its production world wide.My moms is a may built car and its had no issue till today accept the blow of a runflat which was due to a bad pothole on the road she drove straight into one as it was raining and she didn't see it.

I drove her car yesterday for about 800 km its a stunning car..And I love the different setting how the car changes dynamics its really brilliant feature and works beautifully.

If you go for a W205 I hope its that stunning blue wagon.

good luck

Ok, I get the wagon thing! :D

AWD - I'll be straight out: My wife and I both perceive and recognise AWD's superiority in wet weather. That being said, having come from the WRX, the 3er feels hardly less stable over standing water. Modern stability control and good condition tyres render the need for AWD on tarred roads to next-to-nothing. In dry weather driving, I prefer RWD to AWD. In wet weather with AWD it was always fun to punt the car out of a corner under power following a mid-corner lift. With RWD you need to be more careful with the slide. Not that I do this much on public roads, mind you! I love the AWD's security on gravel roads - Forester still rocks!
Put it this way - I have no desire for an xDrive 3er whatsoever. My heart yearns for a 4er GC.

Exciting! New car
What about a not so very new E-Klasse (S212)? I don't know about prices in Australia, but a demo or 1 year old dealercar could be affordable. Also keeping in mind, that the new E-klasse is due in early 2016. I'm sure we know how it looks late 2015. That gives you ammunition for the negotiation. Quality and reliability is very good Luggagespace is enormous; you could easily take a handful of girls with you ;-)
Good luck in finding a great one.
Edit: just read your remark on the E-Class. Was that a wagon or a sedan?

The E-class is a sedan. We only get the E200 and the E400 wagon here. The E200 is too slow for me, and the pre owned E400 wagons are still priced at above $110k AUD, it won't be a problem if I put some pretty rich girls in the back ;). But in all honestly I think I am still a bit too young to drive around in an E-class wagon.

An update on my car shopping journey.

I had a quick look at the GLA, and the new W205 since the dealership was along the way. I didn't have time to go for a test drive.

The GLA has a tiny boot so it is off my list.

The W205 wagon looks very appealing with the standard 19" rims, and the interior has immense showroom appeal. MB has mastered the art of perceived quality. The interior looks a lot more impressive than it is until you spend some time inside pressing all the buttons and touching all the surfaces. I am not saying it is bad in anyway way, I still think it is class leading. The fit and finish is near flawless as well. However I am slightly disappointed with some of the weighting and the feel of the chrome/liquid silver coated plastic buttons/trims, eg door handle, buttons for the windows, air vent adjuster..etc.

I really dislike the standard gloss black plastic dashboard, it doesn't feel cheap, but it doesn't look quite right next to the real aluminium door trim. The wood trim for the dashboard is only available with the $2000 optional "Exclusive package".

The interior is noticeably more spacious in all dimensions compare to the W204 and the boot space is definitely sufficient for my needs.

I have mentioned the potential fit and finish issue with the early production model, and I have noticed that there is a slight misalignment between the rear bumper and the bodywork of a few cars, have a look at the photo below.

Anyway I got a quote of $87k drive away with the exclusive pack and the COMMAND package, I am sure there will be room for negotiation if I go back to my preferred dealership.

Have you maybe thought about finding a rich husband instead? We all have to make sacrifices for the things we want most!
The new C63 wagon does look very tempting...so perhaps the sacrifice is worth it ;)

C'mon Monster. You don't need an AWD, you live in Sydney for crying out loud! :D
There are plenty of crazy people around in Sydney, I need AWD to get me away from them as quickly as possible.

Damn! Great rims for a standard C-Class :)

Maybe try to find a 2-3yo A6 with 2-3 years of warranty left?
I think it will suit all your needs:

The S4 Avant is a brilliant car too. Still the best family Audi IMO:

CONS: There's a new one coming soon.

Funny you should mention the A6, my wife likes them, our Audi dealer has their demo A6 2.0 TDI multitronic on sale and has given me a stupidly low price, we just need to work on the trade in price for her Touran. The car is loaded, there's still 4 years warranty, I was unsure of the multitronic but it really isn't the nasty device which I remember form the one I drove about 4 years ago. The only think I don't like is the 18inch alloys, it needs 19's or 20's, but that's purely cosmetic. She might have a new car tomorrow.
