C-Class (W204) Mercedes Confirms Return of 4-cyl. C-Class

The Mercedes-Benz W204 is the third generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The W204 platform was also used for the E-Class Coupé (C207). Model codes: W204 (sedan), S204 (station wagon / estate), C204 (coupé). Production: March 2007 – March 2014 (sedan), February 2007 – March 2014 (station wagon), 2011–2015 (coupé). Model years: 2008–2014, 2012–2015 (coupé)
The chassis/engine of the original ML is robust, but the interior, exterior trim and what not was cheap as hell.

The W220 S-Class is likely the 2nd worst vehicle Mercedes has ever built. So cheap and unreliable. Can't believe Mercedes thought they could do that with any vehicle, and especially with the S-Class.

Is that the reason why lots of people would rather lease than buy ( the S and E ).

A lot of people lease for the same reason they buy stripped down cars, they can not afford it.

Some of course lease for business or because they like to get a new car every few years.

Are you sure ? If so, it would be great. You know, when I consider a MB car , it is because I like the design, the engineering especially new material ( plastic , paint ). So I try to keep it simple , not too much electronics, fancy things ( except nice stereo which I need). I do carew about decent handlings, performance and fuel efficiency . So I would reluctantly pay more ( comparable to a Japanese car ) for the premium but not for the status.

A lot of the engineering is for the development of better equipment to enhance driving and make the car safer. For example, I would always get P2 because of the vastly improved lighting system that makes the car safer to operate, rear side airbags for safety.

I like to pick the package (C, E, S, SL, etc) and get as much as possible within that. Considering how much cars cost and how much we use them, there is no reason to go without an option. I hate vinyl seats, so the leather option is a must. Whatever is left over I just add in since I know that if I omit something, I will miss it. In the case of a C class I would rather have a $50k car that I love than a $40k mistake.

I completely agree with you,Unterturkheim. I would love to have a P2 option for the C, but I have a budget too. My budget is no more than 40K out of the door. Of course, that would not be much as a "well equiped car".And yes, you have to have at least 1 option or something about 10% of the base price.By the way, you are man with high standard which is a good thing, and I'm not that cheap. We'll see how good the 20011 FL C will be.

You always have the option to plan on keeping the car longer, then the increase in purchase price may cost you less in the end. For example, most people keep a car 3-5 years, in that case a $40k car costs more than a $50k car that you keep for 7 or 8 years.

Well, it has been a while, since my last post here. So, do we expect MB to present the FL C (2011MY ) at the Geneva auto show this March along with the update engines ( Diesel included) ? If so, I expect the 2011MY will be here inthe U.S late this summer.

The C has a lot about to happen with it, if everything is right. A 4-cylinder, 2 revised 6-cylinder models, a diesel, a Coupe with some of those engines?? Hell why not bring the wagon back with one engine and standard 4Matic!

I've just read the Consumers Report March 2010 issue today, in which they talk about the Volswagen Golf TDI. This diesel engine has noticeable clatter sound at idle. I wonder if the diesel C behaves the same. It would be a big turn off for me. Could you guys please elaborate more on this subject. Thanks,

The VW engines are far behind MB, by at least one generation, closer to two. Also, VW has much less insulation. NVH will not be an issue in the MB.

Just curious, what are you driving now? A point of reference would be helpful.

I've been driving Japanese sedans such as Nissan Maxima ( 2) , Acura TL and now Toyota Sienna (2004 MY) so I'm used to quiet and refined gas engine. However, I want to be green for my next car, which is a bit smaller, RWD and a bit premium. So, the facelift C with Bluetec engine comes to my mind.I know old MB diesel engines but that was then.I just want to get the most refined diesel engine as possible.

Four-cylinder C250 to account for half of MBUSA's C-Class sales

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which receives a modest facelift for the new model year, features a host of changes under its hood. Most notably, Mercedes-Benz will offer an all-new four-cylinder engine option, with the model designation of C250, here in the States. The C250 features a direct-injected 1.8-liter turbocharged mill that looks to be quite potent. With 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque available, the turbo'd four propels the C250 to 60 miles per hour in 7.1 seconds and returns a combined 24 miles per gallon, an improvement of 4 mpg over the C300 model.

M-B is confident that the base model C250 four-cylinder C-Class will be a hot seller. In fact, M-B anticipates that nearly half (45 to 50 percent) of all C-Class models sold will come packing the four-cylinder engine. While it's certainly not the first time that Mercedes has offered a four-cylinder C-Class model in the U.S. – both the extinct C220 and C230 featured four bangers – it is the only time, at least that we can recollect, that M-B expects a four-cylinder model to be the bread-and-butter vehicle in the C-Class' U.S. lineup. With improved fuel economy and a lower price point compared to the C300, it's not hard to see why the C250 could appeal to a broader range of buyers.

Why would we want a 4 banger car with only 24mpg ( combined) ? It should be at least 34mpg. So it makes sense to bring the diesel engine to the U.S rather than the 1.8liter turbo charged mill.

Looks like the engine plant is maxed out already?

"The diesel sedan would arrive sooner, but Mercedes is still trying to keep up with strong worldwide demand for its four-cylinder diesels in markets where those engines are an absolute necessity for sales. When it does hit our shores, we suspect it’ll do quite well."

:). Yes, by the time it hits the U.S soil ( by the end of 2012 for the C), then the new MBW 3er would come out the same time ( with new diesel engine). It would be hard for me to make decision.

So stop producing some of the gas 4 cylinders and produce the diesel instead.
