The new SL and AMG GT will effectively replace the two models.
A report from approximately a month ago suggested Mercedes-Benz is planning a major reduction in its model range for the United States. Just a few weeks after the company ended the production of the C-Class sedan in the US and the A-Class in Mexico, it is now confirming two more models will bite the dust very soon.
In a lengthy press release detailing model updates for the 2021 model year, Mercedes has officially announced the S-Class Coupe and S-Class Convertible are entering their final year of production. Both the regular and AMG-tuned variants of the luxury vehicles will be discontinued after the 2021 model year. The only upgrade for the next 12 months is the addition of the Cirrus Silver exterior color for the coupe and convertible.
According to the report from July last year, a total of seven Mercedes models will be canceled in the United States. Apparently, the S-Class Coupe and S-Class Convertible will be gone for good as dealers of the brand are reportedly unhappy by the bloated portfolio of the company.
In addition to the two confirmed models, Mercedes will be looking to also stop the production of the C-Class coupe and convertible, as well as the E-Class coupe and convertible. The SUV-rich lineup of the automaker will continue to be dominated by high-riding machines as America’s luxury crossover market has seen a major 73-percent increase in the past five years.
The next-generation S-Class Sedan is just around the corner with a full debut scheduled for next week. The new model most likely won’t spawn two-door derivatives at all as their role will be taken by the upcoming SL and the next-gen AMG GT. These two vehicles will essentially become the brand’s flagship open-top and coupe offerings.

A very very very sad day in Mercedes history, I mean it. The coupe of the S class was always my favourite Merc. I cannot believe that they gave up on such a legendary car of their repertoire. S class always needed the coupe. They are very very different cars-the SL and the CL or S coupe. Frankly, it was easier to accept for me if they had dropped the sl because the last generation was so much less than it was expected. Meh....like artist said- indeed- it is a TRAGIC DAY !

Looking at the new SL it is going to be probably the same size as the 911 at about 4.5m long which is a good 50cm less than the S-coupe/cabrio so I dont think it will be a 4seater for sure but maybe a tiny 2+2. I don't think there is much of a market for smaller roadsters but more for high end large luxury coupes, look at Audi its going to stop making the TT and TT roadster, so I don't think the SL will sell anymore cars than the S-coupe. Its days of 20000 units per year are gone.

These are the US sales figures for the SL in the last 5 years and its been truly dismal in 2019 and 2018.

20191.690
20182.126
20172.940
20163.722
20154.060

Just for comparison, here are some more sales numbers for certain years of the SL in the U.S:

1984 - 15,720
1990 - 9,619 -------> R129 introduction
2002 - 13,717 -------> R230 was a massive hit for years until about 2008 or so
2003 - 13,318
2004 - 12,885
2005 - 10,080
2008 - 5464
2011 - 1449 - The R230 was totally gone by now - WOW
2012 - 4899 - Spring introduction of the R231
2013 - 7007 - Full year of the R231 and it's best year by far
2019 - 1690 - DEAD

I think the new SL (AMG) will try to steal sales from Aston and Ferrari gt cars, might be a bigger market than that of comfortable 2-door coupes.

S-Coupe is the best MB design of the last 20 years, sad to see it dropped.

I don't understand this move. SL I knew it was worse in sales number than S coupe.

Am I wrong?

Fact of the matter is there is brand equity in the SL name that outweighs the S-class coupe/vert. That that the latter has switched names to CL in the past underscores this. All of the cache of the S-class name truly rides on the sedan.

Further, it’s easy to return the SL to its sporty roots, which is the heart of the market right now. Big boulevard-cruising coupes and convertibles like the S-class coupe and vert are part of a rapidly dying market.

The benefits of big coupes are no longer unique to the segment. Ten years ago you’d buy a big coupe because of its design, effortless power delivery and a very comfortable ride. Nowadays almost all cars a turbo charged and capable of delivering low end torque while great suspension technology is no longer exclusive to cars like the S-Class and above.

The benefits of big coupes are comfort and refinement which you won't have in any small 2 door cars. The 8 Series, 911's, Astons, etc are stiff and noisy, not good for cruising.
Maybe the new SL will have the ability to be a quiet and comfortable cruiser, MB doesn't need another stiff and nosiy car, AMG GT has too much of that.

"Style Conscience" is now a territory that has become increasingly occupied by the 4 door "sedoupe".

What would you guys buy S580 or AMG?

FL S63 Coupe is still very expensive and I think the price will drop like the pre-fl version so better wait.

I suspect that depreciation will be as massive as it is rapid over the course of the next few years. And whether the C/A217 will ever attain the sort of classic status (and price plateaus) enjoyed by the W111/112 SE coupes and convertibles is the question that will remain unanswered for at least a few decades. That being said, the C/A217 may be a legitimate "investment for the soul" for bonafide fans. Especially good ones that can be had for very reasonable money.
