Mercedes has temporarily halted production of the electric G-Class.
Worldwide, only around 1,450 units of the G 580 EQ have been sold since its launch in spring 2024. This can hardly be considered a success story. According to Auto motor und sport, Mercedes has lowered the starting price of the G 580 EQ several times to boost demand; from an initial price of €142,622 to approximately €128,359. Despite these sometimes significant price reductions, sales have remained weak. Internally, the model is reportedly described as "a car that sits like a bullet in dealerships."
Auto motor und sport considers the reasons for halting G 580 EQ orders primarily from two perspectives: Firstly, the G-Class is aimed at a very specific target audience where emotion, status, and tradition play a central role. Many buyers love the G-Class for its "real engine" and "real sound."
Secondly, there are practical disadvantages that make the model less attractive: With an unladen weight of approximately 3.1 tons, its carrying capacity and practical applications are severely limited. In addition, the lack of towing capacity and the WLTP range of 468 kilometers are likely to be significantly lower in real-world driving, especially on highways or off-road conditions.
Is Mercedes preparing to completely discontinue production of the G580 EQ?
The G580 EQ has been temporarily closed for orders since the beginning of 2026; Mercedes officially states that "all production quotas" have been filled. However, the G580 EQ will be launched in April without any significant technical changes for the new model year, meaning without any significant purchase incentive. So, what will make the G580 EQ a "must-have" in the eyes of customers? Probably the opposite. As it stands, there are very few buyers who truly need an electric G-Class – too few to justify a long product lifecycle.
