Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

In the direct vicinity of the former Auto Henne showroom, once the largest M-B dealership in Munich. I used to ride my bicycle there as a young teenager regularly, gazing at the shiny new W108/109 S-Class sedans and breathtakingly elegant W111/12 SE 2 doors.

Making cars true to your core value is not giving up. If anything, it is the opposite. And if a certain demography doesn't like what your product stands for, so be it. I find compromising your core values to pander to a market far more pathetic.
Making cars true to your core values as business won't automatically fail in China then, will they. Because they'll still be desirable.
That's my point. Giving up an entire market is just a bit pathetic. At least in my opinion.

I'll tell you my opinion based on what I see here (which also might mean nothing) .
I'm based in Xi'An. I haven't seen to many new Mercedes's S Class, and maybe just a handful of the new BMW 7 series. The most I see are the I5 G60 from the German brands and lots G30s and W213s.

In the last year, the Chinese brands have managed to capture very well the S Class and 7 series market.
The market which is still left "empty" is the Rolls Royce/Maybach/Bentley market which I believe it will not be affected, at least not for RR which used with low quantity sales at that price level.

On the other side, just selling Maybach, won't be of any help for Mercedes.

If you make cars that are desirable to own, then the sales will come.
Especially if you use local parts and manufacturing supply chains for their market. Anyway. We shall see how it goes

You know that's not bad actually. There's still physical controls
I like what they had done here. This hyperscreen or superscreen design looks much better than what is in the EQ range and the E-class. Also they have not changed the overall design of the GLE interior, kept the nice huge wood slab across the dash, the bottom row of toggle switches and even the touch pad is still there. Even the door seat switches are unchanged which is a good thing as they are miles nicer than the new seat controls. I love that they not added the black piano trim at all on the doors or center console. In my opinion it looks good and not really dated at all. It's a nice interplay of new tech with traditional elegance. It looks similar to the screen in the CLA concept, not so tall and a modernization of the previous twin screen in the current pre 2nd MOPF GLE.

Only my humble opinion:

I cannot take Maybach very seriously. It is little more than a perceived "lavish luxury" accessory package for higher production volume standard luxury segment M-B automobiles. And often presents itself as contrived and tacky to the point of being ridiculous. And embarrassing. A genuinely discerning M-B customer can achieve a far more tasteful job by taking advantage of what Manufaktur has to offer. Should M-B decision makers insist that Maybach exists, the brand should offer exclusive bespoke automobiles that feature exterior and interior design that are not obviously derivative.

As I said earlier in another thread.

At first glance they indeed look like blinged up Mercedes Benz cars.

Buy they drive completely different, suspension, sound deadening, engine and transmission calibration and so on are completely different.

In the interior you can’t even get the leather quality of the Maybach in the normal Mercedes Benz, even in the Manufaktur program.

They currently sell 20k/yr, with this size bespoke cars could be an option.

That’s what they are tho, a trim grade of a Mercedes.

At first glance yes.

But the differences are bigger than between an Alpina and a BMW.

You have to drive one to feel it.

The problem is, Mercedes Benz uses the Maybach as the flagship of the specific Mercedes Benz model, therefore they can’t rave about the differences, on the other hand they had turn the car upside down to have this completely different driving experience.

In the GLS they should use the GLS63 as the flagship.

The GLS600 Maybach is a different car, which is based on the GLS Body.
In that case they could differentiate the car even further, especially design wise.

I think Maybach needs to go upmarket more with their grades of leather or other unique seat materials, as well as higher grades of woods, to make them competitive with Bentley. The wood trims in the S-class Maybach are no better than what is available on the standard S-class and even the leather on the seats and doors is not much better. They need to look at even the carpets and make them denser and plusher.
