Mercedes working on a purpose-built EV concept, could battle the BMW i3

Entry-level AMG GT will be launched "shortly" after the AMG GT S
Daimler design boss Gorden Wagner has revealed some new details about the AMG GTand a possible BMW i3 competitor.

Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, Wagner confirmed the AMG GT S will soon be followed by a less powerful variant. He declined to go into specifics but previous reports have indicated the entry-level model will have a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that has been detuned to 462 PS (340 kW). There could be also be a convertible and a Black Series variant.

At the other end of the spectrum, Wagner said designers are working on a purpose-built electric vehicle concept. Rumored to be a BMW i3 competitor, the concept could be introduced sometime next year.

I knew damn well they would build a roadster version. I remember all that talk about there NOT being a convertible, yeah right. Mercedes is the biggest roadster/convertible pusher in the industry.

And there I figured Daimler already has a purpose built electric vehicle? Comes as coupe or convertible. :)

A short explanation of the concept car above:

The short-distance vehicle NAFA

Congested streets, a lack of parking space, and long tailbacks raised new questions in motor vehicle research. Mercedes-Benz answered them in 1981 with a concept study labelled “Nahverkehrsfahrzeug” or NAFA for short – the short-distance vehicle. With an overall length of 2.50 metres and an overall height and width of 1.50 metres, the innovative two-seater contradicted everything the company had been known to stand for to date.

The short-distance vehicle. NAFA.
Its four-wheel steering even allowed the car to be parked forwards into tight spaces. Its turning circle was all of 5.7 metres. Even if the distance from other parked vehicles on each side was small, two sliding doors permitted convenient entry and exit. They opened forwards, and the side mirror folded in automatically. The car had front-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Its equipment included air conditioning, power steering and seat belt tensioners. The comparatively high seating position, low waistline and large glazed surfaces each contributed to superb all-round vision.
The NAFA study did not fall into oblivion. The insights it produced were incorporated into the design of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the prototype of which made its debut in 1996. In the smart city coupé, introduced in 1997, the concept of the compact urban car celebrated its coming of age. It has been manufactured in large numbers ever since.

The above concept was also included in the history of the smart electric drive, previously posted on GCF. :)

So for the 2016 model year we're looking at a new GLK, S Cabrio, C Coupe, ML Coupe, and the facelifted GL, ML, and SLK? Hopefully the U.S. market will see a C450 sport in there somewhere also.

2017 model year should see the new E-Class, SL facelift and new I6 engines.

Wolfe, where are we now? Is the C63 AMG and the AMG GT all we're seeing at Paris next month or are we getting one of the stretched S-Classes also? I do believe the CL/S600 Coupe is no more, along with any chance of a SL600. Not needed IMO.

^They shouldn't.... but maybe that's why they do a pre launch of the GT next tuesday ?

I haven't been to Paris yet... maybe will need to go this year. It must be as big as Frankfurt ?

Yes, the AMG GT and both the C 63 AMG Sedan and C 63 AMG Estate are expected in Paris. Also believe now the 600 may be reserved exclusively for the S-Class limousine including the Guard, Maybach and Pullman versions, Merc1.

The B-Class MOPF may also be shown in Paris, after the reveal on September 13. And the recently shown new smart fortwo and smart forfour city cars may also come to Paris. :)

But Paris would still be the first motor show to see the World premiere of the AMG GT.

But anyway, Wolfgang seems to confirm that the C 63 AMG will be at Paris too.

It depends what you mean as "big". In terms of area it is much smaller than Frankfurt but slightly bigger than Geneva.

In terms of importance I'd say:

Frankfurt then Geneva then Paris.
