E-Class (W124) Mercedes-Benz W124 turns 30!

The Mercedes-Benz W124 is a range of executive cars made by Daimler-Benz from 1984 to 1997. From 1993, the 124 series was officially marketed as the E-Class. The W124 followed the 123 series from 1984 and was succeeded by the W210 E-Class (saloons, estates, rolling chassis) after 1995, and the C208 CLK-Class (coupés, and cabriolets) in 1997.
In the sum of all factors, the most rewarding W124s' were those from the MOPF.1 (MY 1988-->MY 1992...the series that introduced the "Sacco Flank Planks"). They were relatively immune to rust and corrosion and were generally very well assembled-hence durable. The following MOPF.2 MY1993-->1995 "E-Class" introduced water-soluble paints near the end of its' cycle and re-introduced rust problems. The original pre-MOPF models (MY 1985-->1987) had some teething problems (bucking & yawing drivetrains, rust-especially the rocker panels near and around the jack inlets, etc...).

They’re now a rare sight now. A shame. They defined and era where Mercedes was a god on wheels on the road. There will likely never be another 4-door Benz like the W124. Yes it was just that great of a car.

Without going too deep, it was only necessary to look at it (at the time) to know that it was a before and after, not only for Mercedes but for the industry in general

The original engine line up debut in Germany in 1985.
The W124 230E with 100kw was virtually as fast as the W123 280E with 136kw due to lighter weight and better aerodynamics with massive reduction in fuel consumption. W124 300E with 140kw was as fast as the 177kw W126 500SE.

The W124 and especially 500E are legends Probably one of the best saloons ever made.

It's refreshing to see the older golden models, especially with the new crop of boredom filled cars..

Man W124's are great. You can still find them for cheap if you look around. I got a decent one for about $600 last year, drove it around a few months, and sold it for a profit. Looking to get a very clean 400e or 300te sometime soon.

Here in Germany, decent (category 3) W124 E420s' are going for around 13K Euros. For really good examples (category 2+ and over), count on spending well in excess of 25K Euros. Anything under category 3- will almost certainly be a bottomless money pit.
