E-Class (W124) Mercedes-Benz W124 turns 30!

The Mercedes-Benz W124 is a range of executive cars made by Daimler-Benz from 1984 to 1997. From 1993, the 124 series was officially marketed as the E-Class. The W124 followed the 123 series from 1984 and was succeeded by the W210 E-Class (saloons, estates, rolling chassis) after 1995, and the C208 CLK-Class (coupés, and cabriolets) in 1997.

On the same cover, the difference between the Mercedes and the M535i is abysmal, despite being as beautiful as it is, the quantum leap of the Mercedes is noticeable, it was in another dimension.

Which came out first the 190 or the 300? which debuted this unforgettable design line?

190 came out first, 2-3 years before I think

The 190E was first.

I took delivery of one in February of 1984. It was intentionally configured in a spartan manner. White paint with a darker green M-B Tex interior, radio, manual sunroof, central locking...that was about it. M-B officially stated its' powerplant producing 122 PS. I think that it may have been significantly understated, as the car seemed "fast as f***". Quite dependable, the only repairs being a leaky engine seal (waranty) and a sticky rear-door return band (waranty). I put a relatively good amount of kilometers on my cars back then. I traded it in two and a half years later with well over 100K kms on the odometer for a BMW E30 320i. It was my first and only M-B. The car was really good, but the authorized shop severely sucked in terms of attitude towards customers. And away to BMW I was...

A friend of mine had the 122 ps 190 4 speed auto from 1983 and later bought a C180 again with 122 ps. The older car felt like it had at least 50 ps more than the C class.

Looks like the W124 is 38 years old. Searching to find the the oldest mercedes w124 on uk roads, I entered registration L400GYT and checked the car history but that’s defiantly not the oldest on the roads. Would be interesting to find the oldest car.

This era was when MB had their glory days. I remember sitting in my Uncles 300E 24V when I was very young and still even remember the smell.

Besides the W204, W212 and W221 era MBs the rest of the modern MB generations dont have that solid german tank look anymore.
