Mercedes pickup will not be sold in North America

It's not just a rumor - it's officially official.
Until now it was believed Mercedes-Benz’s first pickup truck in history could be offered in the United States, but official information from… well - Renault, confirms the Nissan Navara-based model won’t make it stateside.

The French manufacturer released a press release detailing the cooperation between Daimler and Renault-Nissan Alliance. The company announced the partnership “is maturing as it enters its seventh year in 2016.”

But what’s more interesting, Renault says the new one-top pickup of Mercedes will be designed by Daimler “to meet the specific needs of its customers in Europe, Australia, South Africa and Latin America," without a single word about the North American market.

We already know it won’t be a “fat cowboy truck,” but a “real Mercedes” and a "truly premium" product. The new pickup will be manufactured at Renault’s plant in Cordoba, Argentina, and at Nissan’s Barcelona plant in Spain, where the Nissan NP300 Frontier and the Renault Alaskan will also be produced.

Mercedes already announced its version of the pickup trio will be significantly different than the Navara with distinctive design, higher quality materials, and more optional features. As a consequence, it will be more expensive than its Japanese and French brothers, and other key players in the segment, such as the Ford Ranger andVolkswagen Amarok.

At this point, it’s not clear whether Mercedes will use its own engines to power the pickup or it will ask its partners Nissan and Renault for help. While a base variant with the Navara’s 2.5-liter turbodiesel sounds like a reasonable option, a range-topping model with a V6 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 258 horsepower (190 kilowatts) and 457 pound-feet (620 Newton meters) of torque is also a possibility, according to reports from earlier this year.

Renault says Mercedes-Benz will provide further insights into the new pickup truck’s design, strategy, and markets in October this year. Hopefully, we will get more information about its powertrains until then, so stay tuned.

Crazy MB from 10 years ago would have also made an AMG version of this, but I doubt this will happen now.

Still, I really like the idea of a premium German pickup. I only wonder how premium it'll be considering the base of this car...

Mercedes GLT-Class pickup to be revealed next week

Mark your calendars, the new Mercedes-Benz GLT pickup will make its world debut on October 25th, 2016.
In just a few days, we’ll catch our first glimpse of the brand new Mercedes-Benz pickup truck. Being developed together with Renault-Nissan, the new pickup is expected to make its debut on October 25th, 2016, and will land in dealerships in 2017.

With the possibility of wearing either the GLT-Class or Class X moniker (more likely the former), the new light pickup will be based on the same platform used to underpin both the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan. Under the hood, we should expect to see a similar powertrain options as well, including a four-cylinder 2.3-liter turbodiesel, a 2.5-liter inline-four gas version, and range-topping 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel with as much as 258 horsepower (190 kilowatts) and 457 pound-feet (620 newton-meters) of torque.

Like the Navara, the Mercedes pickup will be produced at the new Nissan facility in Argentina, and will go on sale in markets outside of North America exclusively. Company execs specify that the biggest areas of focus for this new product will be in South Africa, Latin America, and Australia.

Of course, it being a Mercedes, the company says it won’t be a “fat cowboy truck,” but rather, a premium product designed to compete with the likes of the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok, and others in the segment.

Expect to see the new Mercedes pickup in less than ten days when it debuts at an invite-only Mercedes-Benz event, following soon after with a world debut at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil.

A re-badged Nissan would be extremely disappointing and not worthy of the badge. They also won't be able to command the significant price premiums they were talking about.

I'm surprised its ready for a reveal. I thought it was to be revealed in 2017. I hope the above report is inaccurate and that they are putting a bit more effort into this thing.

MB Passion writes the sheet metal may be the same for all three, and only the plastic cladding etc may differ. So far prefer the Alaskan. :)

I don't understand why some you are so disappointed that it's going to be a re-badged Nissan. @Gianclaudio and I warned one year ago that the Mercedes pickup truck was going to be a re-badged Nissan Navara.

What's the difference really?

Personally, I far prefer the concept of a luxury four-by pickup over a luxury breadvan.

Hopefully, this one's good.
